I know this was totally a dick move, but I gave Duncan's shield to Alistair and then right before Landsmeet, I quietly took it back because I knew he was leaving. "Well, if you're not going to be a Grey Warden anymore, I'll just take the most important thing to you because I don't have anything with that nifty Grey Warden logo on it and I'm basically Duncan 2.0 for Awakening. Amirite?"

*Starts up Awakening for the first time*

"Oh, hey, Grey Warden heraldry. Huh. I guess I could have just let Alistair keep that shield after all."

how do you cope without a mage? I depend on them for too much (lol i say this like I still play the game, LOL)

Serena is running with a no-mage group. Leliana, Zev, Alistair, PC. Three rogues and a warrior. Things die so fast no healing is needed.

I usually use my mages for crowd control. A ranged rogue can do pretty much the same thing.

I haven't really had a mage in my group in a long time (except for when Brosca romanced Morrigan) unless I am trying to trigger Wynne's personal quest by traveling with her. I just stock up on health potions and have their tactics set to drink at a certain health threshold.

Then again, I now play on easy mode because I do not have anything to prove. Already beaten it at normal and difficult (not nightmare though) and this game is too damn long as it is. Sue me. =p

Yes to both of these, but I have done one nightmare mode but oh crap did it drag on and I was all JUST DIE ALREADY.

On one game, I used Zevran to stealth through 80% of Deep Roads (finished Paragon of Her Kind within an hour or so this way) and the vast majority of the cultists/dragons in the ashes quest. Brecilian Forest is mercifully short, but I don't really take screenshots there because I don't enjoy pictures of killing animals. I didn't like taking screenshots of killing the Lady of the Forest in wolf form either, but sometimes screenshots remind me of what decisions I made on a playthrough.

So...I'm in the middle of the first task for Bhelen, and have realized...I can fight in the proving (restarted) does that effect anything?

I don't think so. Fight it for yourself to be in your face to Bhelen after doing his task.

Wow, so apparently 'do you give the shield to Alistair or let him use it' is either a horribly offensive question no one wants to answer or it just somehow got ignored twice...

Oh he used it. What? My Aeducan wasn't precious about heirlooms. She grew up surrounded by dusty old relics anyway. And symbols are power.

It is sitting in my inventory since I am a DW warrior and Alistair is relaxing at the camp for pretty much the entire game. No need for a S&S tank as my main is like a freight train.

I have two Aeducans. One never uses him and the other uses it herself.

She means allow him to "borrow it for a time" or keep it as a gift permanently.

I've only had one DN game where she wasn't a shield user so I probably had Alistair using it temporarily until I was able to replace it with the Grey Warden shield that I always get for him from Warden's Keep. I keep all relevant dwarf stuff in my chest at Warden's Keep and put them in my inventory for when I import to Awakening so I can access them from the chest at Amaranthine if I get nostalgic.

Oh definitely fighting it myself.  I won my own proving, by the stone Endrin's "Only child" will win the one in his name.

It seems that Baizyl is screwed either way if you do sneak support. If you get him to enter the Proving, of course, then his lover can't see him and the palace wants to see him for his part in his cousin's rebellion and if he doesn't enter than Harrowmont was very disappointed and launches an investigation which he thinks will also damn him, possibly if they find out WHY he didn't enter.

I guess he'd be okay if you pretended to side with Harrowmont and don't talk him into entering the Proving, though.

So how are you able to forgive Endrin so easily? Is it the fact he clearly regretted what he did to you?

*thinks about it*

It's a gift. I wrote that he keeps it and doesn't use it, if I seem to rememmmmber right, like it's on the wall as a trophy.

That's pretty much how I see it for Serena. Alistair has been family, a brother, and eventually lover to her. So she gives him something to signify the bond. Something important.  From Orzammar's Royalty, to Human Royalty...is ikinda cool too.

I feel sorry for him; do not know why maybe because unlike the other fighters he is actually a nice guy. Too bad he is going to die in this playthrough and I took his 15g since he cannot take it when he reaches the Stone.

He was as much a victim of Bhelen's conniving as the DN and Trian were. Gorim tells you in the prison your father has already fallen ill (I equate it to a heart attack type situation), he's in no shape to fight when Harrowmont is overpowered by Bhelen, who as Gorim also tells you had to be planning this and gathering support for a long time. And reading the letter he's basically disowned Bhelen and considered the DN his only child at the end.  It was pretty easy to forgive the guy really.

I can't seem to manage it. Yeah, Gorim says he's pretty much fallen apart when he was sent for which was a little while after you're exiled and the letter you get doesn't really say anything about how he tried to stop it or something to that effect. He says that he chose to let it happen and even if revealing his ill health would  hurt his pride it's better than sending the message that he was okay with killing you for the sake of appearances.

Even the letter he sent to Harrowmont who would have known the truth and in which he actually ended up begging him to look for you speak of his choosing to allow it to happen. It is possible that had he tried he wouldn't have succeeded (which I don't buy) but he didn't even make that effort. Bhelen's support was enough that, until you kill them all in the coup, you had no shot at the throne anymore, true, but that didn't mean he had to just let you be fed to the darkspawn.

DN letter...

Perhaps you will burn this letter unread. For that, I would not blame you. But I would not return to the Stone without saying this to you: I have seen what Bhelen is. And when I saw it, I knew I had been a fool. For only a fool would cut out his own heart and burn it for the sake of appearences. I never believed in your guilt. I allowed you to be exiled because I feared an inquiry into Trian's murder would taint our house with scandal in the eyes of the deshyrs and cost our family the throne.
But I have saved nothing by this sacrifice: I sent my only child into an uncertain exile. Know that whatever you do now, you bear all the honor and pride of House Aeducan.

I mean, he's already pretty self-deprecating and afraid you'll hate him so why not mention that he couldn't do anything?

Harrowmont letter...
My Lord Harrowmont, My guilt weighs heavily on me, and I know now that I was a fool. Only a fool would cut out his own heart and burn it for the sake of appearances. I allowed the Assembly to send my child to exile and death because I feared an inquiry into Trian's murder would taint our house with scandal. You have been my rock and my shield these long months and for that I thank you. But I must ask for one thing more. I wish to discover if my child survived. Even the smallest trace will set my mind at ease. Send your men, your scouts, anyone who will go!
Bhelen thinks I am mad. He says that if word spreads of my wish, our House will be undone. He doesn't know that Aeducan is already lost. I destroyed us when I sacrificed what was most precious. Please, Pyral, help me. I come to you not as a king, but as a father.

I think if he can confess here that House Aeducan is undone in his eyes (which if people found out would hurt House Aeducan's standing) he also wouldn't need to pretend that he couldn't have stopped it from coming. Admittedly, though, the DN wouldn't see this.

I felt the opposite: he allowed Bhelen to destroy your life with the Trian incident and then broke tradition by sentencing you to die in the Deep Roads without a trial. As the "favorite" he easily tossed you to the wolves so he can quickly get rid of you to avoid any further trouble. My "evil" DN never forgave him and crowned Bhelen as King with an army of Golems to rebuild the Dwarven Empire.

You know, that was actually my biggest motivation to side with Bhelen. I just felt bad about Harrowmont who didn't do anything to screw me over and who went up against House Aeducan in the course of following through with his promise to not let Bhelen profit from what happened.

Meh, I know what it's like to resent your father, and have him die before you can forgive him. It sucks really.  Even when you've seen the man maybe once a year for your entire 19 years of life.  Also, forgiveness makes it easier on the one doing the forgiving. Why carry around the resentment and anger any longer than you have to.

Serena will avenge the hate and anger on Bhelen, and forgive her father...at that point she has closure and can get on with her life.
