Like all sweeping generalizations (yes, including this one )  But we're creatures with brains rigged to try and find patterns everywhere, it takes lot of conscious effort to counter that and in some ways it's countering the very mechanics which helped out evolution (i mean this tendency to see patterns here, not the prejudice which can be the result)

Then you meet the guardian and hear his little speech about the suffering in your past, yours and others. I think Trian's image is a magic manifestation of your guilt/past. Maybe not REAL but he's still Trian.
