Additionally the darkspawn isn't prevented from using the said Deep Roads to emerge wherever they darn please rather than slavishly follow the surface trails. They have much softer, easier and better targets if they head west and the faster they move there, the larger advantage of catching the enemies unprepared. It'd be pretty silly to waste time trying to squash few dwarves instead.

Poor argument. If Ferelden falls and the darkspawn reach the Frostback mountains, you realy expect them to just leave Orzammar like that and head West?
Considering the fact that Orzammar doesnt' seem to be too deep, you think the darkspawn would waste such an opportunity?

Again, why would they enter the mountains to begin with? There's a trail there but very little else and the darkspawn is not obliged to use it, especially since being potential chokepoint it's dangerous route for them to take while they can move unhindered through the Deep Roads instead.

And sure, leaving dwarves holed up in their little fortress can be perfectly viable. What do you expect them to do, go out and chase after darkspawn all way to middle of Orlais and beyond? If so then by all means, let them -- they'll just make easier targets once stripped off their defensive walls.

I thought that the idea was that the dwarves might put off honoring their treaty so that the Surfacers would take most of the casualties but to get involved before the Surface actually fell?

Yup, something like that. KoP is countering that with opinion that as soon as Ferelden falls darkspawn is going to pay visit to Orzammar so it's a do-or-die for the dwarves to try and squash the Blight as soon as possible, because they are second on the menu. While i'm thinking they'd head for the better/easier targets first much like it wasn't unusual in that period for attacker to pillage/burn countryside rather than bleed themselves first on well fortified walls.

The problem for them is that they are relatively safe in Orzammar as long as an Archdemon isn't leading the forces. Getting rid of the Arch is high priority.

And the more land that falls, the more darkspawn. They could try and get aid from the Orlesian forces at the border though, as soon as Ferelden falls.

Edit: Which might be the safer bet.

I suppose this can boil down to how much assistance did the Surfacers get and/or actually need from the dwarves to end the earlier Blights. I mean, dwarf pride put aside at the time of game they are just (large) city-sized population. The amount of troops they can field may make difference for backwater country like Ferelden which just lost major part of its own forces, but i'd expect much denser populated Orlais or Tevinter be capable of striking with much more than that when/if they get organized. Which poses the question for dwarves if it's really practical to play the role of suicidal spearhead and if the Surfacers aren't just as able to handle that mostly by themselves. Given how much of difference (or lack thereof) the presence of dwarves is actually going to make.

Or to put it differently -- if the rag-tag Ferelden coalition falls with dwarves being part of them, then that's it for the dwarves, game over. On the other hand if this coalition falls without the dwarves in it then it may be game over as well but it doesn't have to be because there's still more challengers ready to appear.

edit: (that's not to say this would be guaranteed better way for the dwarves, but rather that it can be viewed as viable alternative, and as such might have impact on their willingness to immediately follow the old treaties)

Just FYI, I am one of those that are waiting for you to finish it in entirely before reading it. I look forward to leaning back on the couch with coffee nearby and reading your story on the ipad while husband watches whatever on TV.

tmp, just thought you'd appreciate this. Remember when I had my DN and Alistair jumping for an ogre at the same time, but he had the derp face? Well, it happened again on my Brosca, only she was the one with a derp face. GD arrows! =p

hehe thanks. Swords don't look right at all to me! And I spent half the day looking for axes I liked that were GOOD. Ended up using the awakening items mod to get two heirsplitters.

Oh, sweet, thanks, tmp!! Just started my dwarf + Leliana game. I've got your mild romance mod running and I especially like that you included the option to kiss her. Seeing her kneel for my dwarf the same way Alistair did is making me all fuzzy and squee-y again. I can't wait for the DLC tomorrow.

I pair them with all the romantic companions. Leliana was the only one I hadn't finished all the way to the end.
