LOL BHELEN FANFIC INCOMING:

When the Warden pushed for Harrowmont to live, Bhelen seethed.

What right did he have? What right?

Bhelen was a methodical man. He lived to put things in their place, for there to be order. He had worked on his coup for months. Years,  in fact. Quietly putting things into sequence, categorising.

But the Warden was gone now, and Orzammar was his. Politics had a way of swallowing whole mistakes and making them disappear, and Harrowmont’s “accident” was arranged with the quiet, unfussy precision Bhelen approved of.

It was surprisingly easy to bribe servants, uncomplicated enough for food to be poisoned. The gossip was spread that Harrowmont had killed himself, and the Shaperate did not disagree with the statement. A body of a dead casteless had been switched at last minute for the funeral, and Harrowmont’s drugged body taken to the palace.

Harrowmont represented mess and disorder to Bhelen, a sore, vocal reminder of failure. He hated failure.

Lord Harrowmont was in a room designed in the palace for interrogations, underground so screams could not reach the surface. Bhelen casually observed his former politcal enemy, looking him over with a calculated smile. He sat in a chair across the bound man patiently, waiting for his Father’s former Second to recognise who he faced.

“Your Father-” Harrowmont started to say woozily, only to be silenced with a quick slap by Bhelen.

“Is dead,” Bhelen said then, pleased to see blood swell and drip into the older man’s beard from his blow.

“The Ancestor’s curse you, Bhelen. You make the Stone weak.”

Bhelen sat back down in his seat and wiped his hands, checking for dirt. “I’m an Aeducan. I do not think so.”

“You are a disgrace to the name of your house.” Harrowmont spat out a mouthful of blood and glared at him.

“Hmm. How tiresome and predictable you are.” Bhelen looked up from his fingernails, voice calm and quiet. “You’re going to die, Harrowmont. You already are, I suppose; the poison you’ve ingested has already weakened your heart. I could take pity on you and slit your throat,  but mercy is something I lack right now. You know why.”

Harrowmont shook against his bindings. “Do your worse,” he spat. “I go to the Stone knowing I did right.”

Bhelen stood  then, hands behind his back. He gestured with a nod to the guards to enter the room, and his Second Vartag followed after.

I guess we should be grateful that Bhelen opted not to let him retire, huh? Or at least I'm pretty sure he did. I only tried that the once before realizing what Orzammar was actually like. This was really chilling. No wonder your DC could have problems with him...

You know, at this rate it will be awhile before my DN changes her mind about who to side with again...

MOAR BHELEN FANFIC, PART 2
________

“The Whisper Man has arrived, your majesty,” Vartag said with a bow. Bhelen acknowledged it with a nod and sat back on the chair opposite.

Harrowmont laughed at him, rocking slightly against his bindings. “Whisper Man? No expense spared.”

A small, slight man in black stepped forward wearing a heavy leather apron, a toolbox in his hands. Carefully he started to set out precise knives and pincers on the table to the side of them, right where the pair could watch. It was part of the theatre, a hint of what could come.

“No begging for mercy? No attempts at bribery? ” Bhelen asked then.

“Why? You’re going to kill me, anyway. What’s the point.”

“Technically you are already dead according the Shaperate. It was all very sad, you took your own life due to the overwhelming stress of the past few months. I understand your wife is grieved at the fact. It was a good funeral, by the way. A large turn out.”

“You don’t touch her,” Harrowmont spat back.

“Are you in any position to argue?”

The bound man slumped against his chains, head bowed. Bhelen smiled at that. “Please leave my wife alone,” Harrowmont said quietly.

The king laughed shortly, then appraised the man for a moment. “So predictable,” he said after awhile. “I’m not a complete monster, Harrowmont. Your family has been offered the chance to swear loyalty to me. Any hint of any wavering allegiance, however…”

Harrowmont sagged in relief, the chains tightening at his movements. “Then I still go to the Stone knowing… Knowing I did my duty.”

“How noble, but we’re not finished yet. You’re withholding information. Now, while the Assembly say they support my rule, I want names.”

The other man stirred at that. “Names?”

It's all I've written. I was going to finish off vaguely with him leaving to the sounds of Harrowmont being tortured (pleasant amirite?) And him calming having a meal with Rica, and his observations of her. VArtag would interrupt with the names he wanted, and Bhelen would have a little Dexter-esque OCD tic about blood and handwashing, but that might be pushing it too far.

Creepy...How would they manage to replace Harrowmont with a casteless? Wouldn't the brand be a giveaway or did they not show the face? And I'm sure it would have been a very touching dinner...for Rica. Posted Image

I guess I just see him as more of a scarily pragmatic morally deficient guy who knew he wanted the throne and did what it took to get it (any hang-ups about what he'd need to do could be overcome in the years it took to actually pull his little coup off). Fratricide wasn't unheard of in dwarven politics (I didn't get the impression Endrin was a horrible person and not only did he likely kill his brother but he allowed his child to be fed to darkspawn even though he believed them innocent to avoid a scandal) and having Harrowmont executed instead of allowing himself to appear weak or Harrowmont's supporters to rebel was a sound move.

Of course, we really don't know enough about him so he very well could be the dwarven Dexter... Being a sociopath could certainly explain how he managed to fool everone for years on end. Posted Image

I wouldn't put torture past Bhelen. I don't see him as a sadist though.

The casteless was a surfacer?

Neither would I but in the story it seemed more like he just wanted to make Harrowmont suffer. He should probably have a good idea of Harrowmont's supporters based on the votes but you can never be too careful, I guess.

And I think that just solved the 'why doesn't anybody realize he's casteless' problem.

Aw, I liked it. The only thing that could make it creepier is if at the nice family dinner with Rica he either thanks her for getting her sibling to help or consoles her that the DC died and then has an adorable moment with Little Endrin while wondering how much progress Vartag's made with Harrowmont.

I was going to do that, yeah... >.> I wanted it to be like a really sane family moment, and Bhelen going through the laundry list of to do politically in his head. I was going to leave the Warden vague, as if I interject the DC in there I will end up with Missa and she will be all shouty and kneecappy in head and will Not End Well.

Would it even be in-character for her to insist on letting Harrowmont retire peacefully?

At that point she's so frazzled by the deep roads and the politics she just wants to leave. I did ask for him not to be killed when I put Bhelen on the throne *in game*, but when I come to write this perticular snarly scene in Duster idk how it'll react.

My first character asked for that because she was a HN and didn't approve of any vaguely 'Howe' moves. My second was a DN and every game after that my characters are thoroughly convinced he's guilty of fratricide so don't see the point asking him not to kill a rival who kept him off the throne fo a month or so. Although I do wonder what it says about my characters that my DN puts him on the throne about half the time and everyone else always stick with Bhelen. Well, except my HN but she keeps thinking of Fergus.

Bhelen is actually one of my favourite NPCs, but like Zevran I get slightly nervy writing him, because he's easy to feck off.

Yeah, I end up siding with him more often than I should because I don't want to have to kill him. I mean, that was such a great Xanatos Roulette that it's a shame to make it all go to waste.

I suppose you could argue that it was more of a gambit but aside from the fact that the timing was somehow perfect and that, should you kill Trian yourself, the others don't arrive until after Trian's dead, you yourself don't arrive before you're supposed to and decide to leave so you're not implicated or take too long (especially with those mercenaries) and arrive afterwards, change your mind about killing him, manage to talk Trian down, murderknife the scout who tries to pick a fight, not let the scout and Ivo follow you, Endrin wouldn't insist on a trial for his favorite child or at least have them sent to the surface...definitely a roulette.
