...you can talk someone into suicide?

Side with Branka.

Convince her that the anvil is evil.

She destroys it and then throws herself off a cliff . . . much to Oghren's dismay.

Sweet.

Oh, I officially love that ending (although everyone's more impressed if you find Caridin). Not only is it a better ending for Oghren as he didn't just have to kill his crazy wife but got her to realize what she was doing and try to make it right in some ways but it's a total 'whoops' moment because you directly caused the deaths of not one but two Paragons by killing Caridin and talking Branka into killing herself. Of course, you have no way of knowing that Caridin would jump anyway and Branka would attack so that makes it even more of a 'damn, I screwed up' moment.

OK, look for my post on page 70. It has the dialogue tree about Hespith and the VO notes that go with it. The reason why it got brought up was that some people wanted the option to kill Hespith like they did with Ruck since she'd turn into a broodmother and there was no reason to let her live. Hence the discovery that she committed suicide without any of us knowing it.

@Sarah -- I will look up the VO notes for talking Branka into her suicide when you bring up Hespith. Need to make dinner now. Lost track of time.

Very interesting.

Am I the only one who can't stand listening to Hespith? I skip her dialogue at ludicrous speed every time.

It's creepy.

I love creepy things. Most everything else seems so . . . mundane in comparison to creepy things.

Maybe I'm just strange?

Wow, and I didn't even need to ask. Posted Image

Yeah, usually when I'm online and realize I need to go make dinner at, say, midnight or so (to the annoyance of anyone who might be sleeping downstairs). Tonight's pretty good though: I remembered by ten. Posted Image

Eh, after what Branka and the darkspawn did she deserves to creep us out a bit. What I absolutely can't stand is Branka's little monologue of craziness where she defends her actions in regards to her House in the background as you fight your way to Caridin.

Hespith is one of my favorite parts of the Deep Roads. I want to question her and absorb everything she's trying to share. She's a dwarf who is rotting before my eyes and I need to know exactly what is happening to my kingdom. This is why it drives me crazy that I can't talk to Utha in Awakening. Maybe I need to read the book to understand her character better, but I want to know why she, as one of the original grey wardens in addition to being a dwarf, thought that siding with him was the way to go. Doesn't help that she's a silent sister.

If anyone has any info on her, I'll <3 you forever.

Edit: Found this in an Utha thread. Turns out Soignee knows. I'll pester her when she gets back from vacation.

And it's even creepier if you're playing a girl and aren't sure if 'resistant to the taint' = 'cannot become a broodmother.'

When is she getting back, anyway?

She went somewhere with "surfers"

She may have said "A week" but I can assure you that it will be longer then a week if she has anything to say about it.

(Branka rationalizing her actions as your party clears the way to the anvil)

Branka: "I needed people to test Caridin's traps. There is no way to break through except by trial and error. I sent them in...." (VO: Lost in her thoughts, remembering what she did. Cold, doesn't care that she sacrificed so many for her obsession.)
Branka: "They were all mine, pledged to be my house, and they didn't want to help. They tried to leave me, even my Hespith...." (VO: Distant, lost in her thoughts. Sounds kind of crazy.)
Branka: "But even she couldn't understand that when you reach for greatness, there are sacrifices. As many sacrifices as are needed." (VO: Sounds like she's losing it, going crazy. Obsessed.)

Branka: "She shouldn't have gone. She was pledged to me. She swore she'd do whatever it took to find the Anvil." (VO: Sounds like she feels she's entitled, like she doesn't understand why someone would disagree with her and abandon her.)
Branka: "There was no other choice. Most of them were dying of the taint already, but some... some of the women were... transforming." (VO: sad, a little horrified, but still determined and obsessed)
Branka: "I knew what they would become. There would be an endless supply, fresh darkspawn to test the traps. They could still serve me, let me find the Anvil. It was the only way...." (VO: determined, almost happy at her discovery)

Branka: "You have no idea how they carried on, holding my hand and begging to die. They had pledged me their *loyalty!* They had no right to fight me." (VO: Crazy sense of entitlement. Thinks it's completely normal and expected for someone to sacrifice themselves for her. Is baffled and outraged that they wouldn't.)
Branka: "They say your order is renowned for its wits as well as its brawn. Perhaps you'll do better than my poor clansmen." (VO: cold)
Branka: "There's something about this place.... It makes people despair." (VO: Distant, lost in her thoughts)

She's going to be so pissed when she sees the kinds of things she missed, especially in the Zev thread. Was she there for the Alicorn even?

See this is exactly why I've never let her keep the Anvil. As much as the dwarves could beneft, there's no risk of it beng abused as she's already shown she can't be trusted with power in what she did to her House. I do wonder, though, if the Anvil was really 'calling' to her. Sure we couldn't hear it, but that doesn't mean it wasn't. The Anvil is a mysterious and very powerful artifact, after all, crafted with lyrium and that does do some strange things to people.

BRANKA COMMITS SUICIDE (VO NOTES)

Branka: "There it is. An ugly lump of hot metal to go over a couple of empty heads." (VO: Mocking, thinks that making a crown to crown a king is beneath her.)
Branka: "Now leave. It will take me some time to fully realize the mysteries here." (VO: Dismissive. Wants people to go away so she can get back to her obsession.)
PC: "The Anvil is evil, Branka. You can't keep using it."
Branka: "I can hear it. It wants to be used again. It speaks in a hundred different voices. Surely, you can hear them." (VO: Demented. She's obsessed and kind of crazy.)

1. You mean the voices of all the dead souls trapped inside?
Branka: "The dead...? You think that's who I hear? But.... No! It's the Anvil, calling to be used...." (VO: Startled by the player's suggestion, then resisting -- if she believes, it makes her a monster, not the hero she thinks she is.)

2. The Anvil's driven you crazy. I hear nothing.
Branka: "But they call to me. I have heard them for two years, just beyond the tunnel, speaking to me...." (VO: Distant, kind of crazy.)

Oghren: "Did you hear what Caridin said? Hundreds of people were bound into golems, trapped inside the Anvil when their bodies were destroyed. That's who you hear!" (VO: Insistent, like he's trying to drum some concept into her head.)
Branka: "No, it's not true! You lie!" (VO: Protesting, like her world is falling apart.)

1. Think clearly and ask yourself where its power comes from.
2. How many more lives will be lost for your power?
(Both questions lead to same response below)

Branka: "But... I will not believe that was Caridin. Caridin would never turn on his own invention. He was a genius, the best of us all." (VO: Trying to convince herself, sounds crazy. If she believes, it makes her a monster, not the hero she thinks she is.)

(IF pass_persuade/intimidate check)
Branka:
"H-he must have been wrong. The Anvil was Orzammar's salvation...." (VO: shaken)

1. Caridin was ready to die to see the Anvil destroyed.
Branka: "The voices... they've been calling me for so long, and I didn't even.... Ahhh, Hespith tried to tell me, but I wouldn't listen." (VO: realization crashing down on her that she has become a monster)

2. Perhaps you're right. Victory is worth any cost.
Branka: "No. No, Caridin himself once said, "It is not the victory, but the achievement." This... this is wrong." (VO: Finally coming to her senses and seeing the error of her ways.)
Branka: "The voices... they've been calling me for so long, and I didn't
even.... Ahhh, Hespith tried to tell me, but I wouldn't listen." (VO: realization crashing down on her that she has
become a monster)

3. The Anvil owns you now. There is nothing left of you.
Branka: "The voices... they've been calling me for so long, and I didn't
even.... Ahhh, Hespith tried to tell me, but I wouldn't listen." (VO: realization crashing down on her that she has
become a monster)

Oghren: "You have to make this right. The Branka I knew would do what is right." (VO: Warm, but firm)
Branka: "The Anvil must be destroyed. It's an abomination." (VO: It hurts her to say this, but she knows it's true)
Branka: "Go. Return to Orzammar. It's better they never know what became of me." (VO: Sadly, haunted)
*END DIALOGUE*

(If FAILED persuade check)
Branka: "He wouldn't turn against his own creation!" (VO: Thoroughly convinced of this)
Branka: "No! You're trying to take the Anvil from me. I won't listen to you. It's mine. MINE!" (VO: crazy and obsessed) *END DIALOGUE*

Truth be told I sparred Branka and gave her the anvil two times out of my 3 current playthroughs.

I am simply not the kind of person who plays as judge/jury and executioner and truth be told my view on the matter is based on my DN, and I believe that without desperate measures the dwarven people will not survive.

If Caridin had not built the Anvil in the first place then Orzammar would have fallen long ago.

I am curios at her VO notes should you choose to preserve the Anvil.

Surah.

Branka: "Here it is, the Anvil of the Void. So sweet, such power!" (VO: Maniacal glee.)
Oghren: "You found the Anvil. Are you happy now? Maybe we could go back to Orzammar, share the good news." (VO: As though he is trying to appease a sensitive child prone to tantrums. Talking gently.)
Branka: "Look at it. It was worth it. All of it. The Anvil is everything I thought it would be." (VO: In awe, obsessed.)
Oghren: "Aye, I should have known. I thought that once you had the Anvil you'd be satisfied...." (VO: Sad, sober.)
Branka: "Perhaps I could use it now... a reward for defeating Caridin. You wanted a crown, no? Or have you set your sights higher than the petty kings of Orzammar?" (VO: pleased, lighthearted)

1. A Paragon's crown. The Assembly must accept that.
Branka: "Then stand aside, and I shall forge it for you. Take it to whomever you please." (VO: pleased, lighthearted)
*CROWN CUTSCENE*

2. Sure. Make me a golem; I volunteer Oghren's soul.
Branka: "Believe me, I appreciate the thought, but it will take me a while to master all the techniques without Caridin's example. Why don't we go with the crown for now?" (VO: amused)
*CROWN CUTSCENE*

3. All I want is for you to see how wrong you've been.
Branka: "You showed which side you were on when you destroyed that golem. Don't get all high and mighty now." (VO: scornful, knows player can't back up his words)
Branka: "I'll make you the crown. Take it to Orzammar and dispose of it as you will." (VO: Scornful, dismissive)
*CROWN CUTSCENE*

4. I want you to destroy the Anvil once you've made my crown.
Branka: "You showed which side you were on when you destroyed that golem. Don't get all high and mighty now." (VO: scornful, knows player can't back up his words)
Branka: "I'll make you the crown. Take it to Orzammar and dispose of it as you will." (VO: Scornful, dismissive) *CROWN CUTSCENE*

1. Good luck with your studies.
Branka: "Once Orzammar settles on its petty king, have him send for me." (VO: pleased, lighthearted)
Branka: "When next you lead your armies against the archdemon, they will be shielded by a tide of steel men." (VO: triumphantly, but sort of maniacal.)
Oghren: "I hope this makes you happy, Branka. I don't think you understand what it cost to get you here." (VO: regretful)
Branka: "Oh, stuff a rag in it, Oghren. Move on! Find a few ****s. Sodding stone, I never thought you'd be the pining type." (VO: Irritated, at the end of her tether.)
Branka: "Now begone." (VO: dismissive)
*END DIALOGUE*

2. Just remember to keep your end of the bargain. (Go to Branka's response in line 1 -- they are the same)

3. The Anvil is evil, Branka. You can't keep using it. (**See "Branka Suicide" a few post above to follow this dialogue tree.**)

PC: "The Anvil enslaves living souls! It must be destroyed."
Zevran: "Living souls suffer all the time. Peasants working the land are trapped, but we do not go about destroying farmland, do we?" (mocking, sarcastic)
(IF: Alistair in party) Alistair: "Farmers don't toil in the fields for all eternity. That's hardly a valid comparison!" (indignant)
Zevran: "It just seems a waste to destroy the Anvil, given what it could do." (greedy, wants the anvil for himself)
PC: "And how would you like to become a golem?"

(IF: medium_intimidate) Zevran: "Now let's not be unreasonable. You wouldn't do *that*, surely." (dismissive, doesn't believe player would do it)
1. How do you know?
2. Wouldn't you like to become a big stone machine?
3. Wouldn't I, if I only cared for power?

1, 2, 3 all lead to:
Zevran: "All right, all right. Perhaps destroying it *is* a good idea." (backs down, wry)

(IF: not_intimidate) Zevran: "Then I'd be as hard as a rock all the time. *Laughs* See? There is a bright side to everything, huh?" (joking, lecherous)
(Then you tell him if your decision is final or if you've changed your mind about the anvil and proceed into the fight)
