But the end had me cracking up. Image IPB

(AND NO I DO NOT WANT ANY OF YOUR "FINE DWARVEN CRAFTS" EITHER... I'VE SEEN THEM BEFORE AND FIND THEM PUNY AND LACKING, AND SORELY UNDERSTATED.)

Seriously, you want to see bitter? Try the Isolde thread. At least we don't want to murder his innocent child just because we're pissed at him.

The Head Shaper is barely under the king himself . . . I imagine the regular Shapers would be on par with the nobles.

So why does Volney feel free to execute the Shaper in broad daylight, not ten feet from the Palace, with witnesses everywhere? He fails at politics...

Because he's an idiot. I thought that was obvious.

Yeah but he didn't look like a young idiot. How did he survive that long again? He was so low-placed in his House of relative insignificance that no one cared to kill him until you?

How has he survived? That's simple.

Pity. ^_^

DWARF NOBLE ORIGIN: SCHOLAR AND BRUTIN VOLLNEY ARGUMENT

Ambient lines that fire before player has spoken to scholar, but is in area.
Scholar:  "I'm sure we can work this out reasonably..." (VO: Fearful)
Scholar:  "It's in the records. There's nothing I can do!" (VO: Desperate protests)

When player clicks on scholar or Vollney:

Scholar:  "Please, Master Vollney, my work is accredited by the shaper!" (VO: pleading, whining)
Vollney:  "These books are lies written by the enemies of House Vollney." (VO: angrily)
Scholar:  "I write only what I find in the ancient records!" (VO: fearful, whiny)
Scholar:  "Lady/Lord Aeducan! You can vouch for my work, can't you?" (VO: begging for aid)
Scholar:  "Your father loved my "History of Aeducan: Paragon, King, Peacemaker!" (VO: defensive)

1. What's going on here?
Vollney:  "This... worm has written a book that slanders my house!" (VO: angry, insulted) *Go to TREE *

2. Gorim, does this scholar truly have my father's favor?
Gorim:  "The king, as well as several other lords, are quite fond of his work. He writes of the ancient Paragons." (VO: matter-of-fact)
Vollney:  "This... worm has written a book that slanders my house!" (VO: angry, insulted) *Go to TREE 1*

3. Ah, I greatly enjoyed that book as well.
Vollney:  "This... worm has written a book that slanders my house!" (VO: angry, insulted) *Go to TREE 1*

TREE 1
1. What does it say?
Vollney:  "It doesn't matter! It's all lies!" (VO: angry, insulted) *Go to tree 2*

2. That's a serious charge.
Vollney:  "He deserves to die for what he has written of Paragon Vollney!" (VO: angry, insulted) *Go to tree 2*

3. So kill him. Do you fear an old man?
Vollney:  "Of course not." (VO: indignant)
Scholar:  "No, please! I--*Uungh!*"
[Cutscene - have Brutin Vollney approaching and stabbing the merchant.]
Gorim:  "That man had the patronage of many powerful houses." (VO: A warning, grim.) *Go to tree 9*

TREE 2
1. Then kill him, Bruntin, or go away. I'm bored.
Vollney:  "Very well." (VO: grim)
Scholar:  "No, please! I--*Uungh!*"
[Cutscene - have Brutin Vollney approaching and stabbing the merchant.]
Gorim:  "That man had the patronage of many powerful houses." (VO: A warning, grim.) *Go to tree 9*

2. Tell me what it says, scholar.
Scholar:  "My work tells the stories of all of those raised to Paragons in the last five hundred years." (VO: honest, sincere)
Scholar:  "When the Assembly names a Paragon, that man or woman is then, by definition, everything one can aspire to be in the world." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Scholar:  "They form their own noble houses, and are revered as living ancestors. But Paragons start off as men." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Vollney:  "Vollney was more than a man!" *Go to tree 3*

3. What exactly has he written, Bruntin?
Vollney:  "He says that Vollney--the Paragon who founded my house, known throughout the world as the greatest of men--was a fraud!" (VO: angry, insulted)
Scholar:  "N-not precisely."

TREE 3
1. Get to the point. Why is Bruntin so angry?
Scholar:  "Vollney became a Paragon by the narrowest margin in history--one vote. A vote mired in rumors of intimidation, intrigue, and outright bribery." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Scholar:  "The records of that vote are kept in the Shaperate and are a matter of fact." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Scholar:  "Not liking history doesn't make it any less true!" (VO: passionate) *Go to tree 4*

2. What was Aeducan like before he was a Paragon?
Scholar:  "Aeducan was much loved, but he was still a man. He was plagued by melancholy, and his fervor regarding Orzammar's safety bordered on obsession." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Scholar:  "When Aeducan was proposed as a Paragon, only one lord in the Assembly objected. The others savagely hacked him to death." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Scholar:  "Aeducan's motion passed without a single dissenting vote." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Vollney:  "Unlike Vollney! Is that what you mean, old man?" (VO: insulted, furious)

3. Bruntin, you're acting like a fool.
Vollney:  "Am I? Would you allow this coward to slander your ancestors?" (VO: Furious. Insulted.)
Scholar:  "I have written no slander!" (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Scholar:  "Vollney became a Paragon by the narrowest margin in history--one vote. A vote mired in rumors of intimidation, intrigue, and outright bribery." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Scholar:  "The records of that vote are kept in the Shaperate and are a matter of fact." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)
Scholar:  "Not liking history doesn't make it any less true!" (VO: passionate) *Go to tree 4*

4. Gorim, does any of this make sense to you?
Gorim:  "If I remember my lessons, Vollney was a controversial choice as Paragon." (VO: pensive)
Scholar:  "It's so good to see some reverence for history among the young generation." (VO: honest, truly believes what he says)

TREE 4
1. The scholar is right.
Vollney:  "You're taking his side? What if he published a book like this about your Paragon Aeducan?" (VO: insulted) *Go to tree 5*

2. The truth doesn't always need to be shared.
Vollney:  "Exactly! Nobody cares about your truth, old man! We honor our ancestors!" (VO: passionate)
Vollney:  "Your Highness, allow me to kill this worm for his disrespect." (VO: fawning) *Go to tree 7*

3. True or false, the Paragons' reputation must be protected.
Vollney:  "Exactly! Just because it happened, doesn't mean it's the truth, old man." (VO: passionate)
Vollney:  "Your Highness, allow me to kill this worm for his disrespect." (VO: fawning) *Go to tree 7*

TREE 5
1. Aeducan was a great man.
Vollney:  "And Vollney was not? Must you disparage a Paragon?" (VO: Insulted, angry)
Vollney:  "You've made a huge mistake." (VO: threatening)
[Action: Vollney exits.]
Gorim:  "That fool has no idea how weak his house is or how low he sits in it." (VO: scornful)
Gorim:  "Shall I have him killed, my lady/lord?" (VO: Slightly eager.) *Go to tree 6*

2. The truth is more important than your pride.
Vollney:  "You would not say so if it was your house, but I shall respect your wishes. For now." (VO: angry)
Vollney:  "Excuse me, your Highness." (VO: barely keeping it together)
[Action: Vollney exits.]
Gorim:  "That fool has no idea how weak his house is or how low he sits in it." (VO: scornful)
Gorim:  "Shall I have him killed, my lady/lord?" (VO: Slightly eager.) *Go to tree 6*

3. Shut up now, Bruntin.
Vollney:  "Do not order me about like some low-caste peon! This is not finished!" (VO: Threatening, angry)
[Action: Vollney exits.]
Gorim:  "That fool has no idea how weak his house is or how low he sits in it." (VO: scornful)
Gorim:  "Shall I have him killed, my lady/lord?" (VO: Slightly eager.) *Go to tree 6*

4. You're right. Truth is less important than reputation.
Vollney:  "Exactly! Nobody cares about your truth, old man! We honor our ancestors!" (VO: passionate)
Vollney:  "Your Highness, allow me to kill this worm for his disrespect." (VO: fawning) *Go to tree 7*

TREE 6
1. What do you think, scholar?
Scholar:  "Well... historically it has been prudent to eliminate a small threat before it becomes larger..." (VO: hesitant)
1a. Hear that, Gorim? Do the prudent thing.
Gorim:  "How do you want it done?" (VO: businesslike)
1a-1: Publicly. Make sure everyone knows why. *Go to tree 6, line 2*
1a-2: Quietly. An accident, preferably. *Go to tree 6, line 3*
1b. I'm not that prudent. Let the poor fool live. *Go to Gorim's response in tree 6, line 4*

2. Yes. And see that everyone knows why he died. [Set: Scholar_PublicMurderBruntin]
Gorim:  "Understood." (VO: businesslike)
Scholar:  "You've shown yourself more daring and aggressive today than most believed of you." (VO: respectful, somewhat awed)
Scholar:  "Someday, I hope to write of the great exploits you are sure to perform." (VO: respectful, somewhat awed)
Gorim:  "Word has been sent. He won't live past the hour." (VO: Businesslike, efficent)
Scholar:  "You've shown House Aeducan a friend to research, history, and the glory of our people." (VO: respectful, subserviant, sincere) *Go to tree 8*

3. Do, but make it look an accident. [Set: Scholar_AccidentMurderBruntin]

4. He's not worth a blade. Leave him be.
Gorim:  "As you say." (VO: respectful)
Scholar:  "You've shown House Aeducan a friend to research, history, and the glory of our people." (VO: respectful, subserviant, sincere) *Go to tree 8*

TREE 7
1. No. I trust he's learned his lesson here.
Scholar:  "You would have me write lies, just to appease some idea about honor?" (VO: protesting, disbelieving, unhappy)
1a. Just be careful *which* truths you tell.
Scholar:  "P-perhaps I could... emphasize Vollney's perseverance over great odds?" (VO: hesitant, a little unsure)
Gorim:  "Would that satisfy you, Lord Vollney?" (VO: matter-of-fact)
Vollney:  "He should be killed... but I bow to House Aeducan's fabled mercy." (VO: a little disgruntled) *END DIALOGUE*
1b. Respect is more important than truth.
1c. Are you questioning me?
Scholar:  "Of course not, your Highness." (VO: nervous, subserviant)
Scholar:  "P-perhaps I could... emphasize Vollney's perseverance over great odds?" (VO: hesitant, a little unsure)
Gorim:  "Would that satisfy you, Lord Vollney?" (VO: matter-of-fact)
Vollney:  "He should be killed... but I bow to House Aeducan's fabled mercy." (VO: a little disgruntled) *END DIALOGUE*

2. Drive him off, but don't kill him.
Vollney:  "As you insist. Run, old man, and leave your lies behind." (VO: superior, smug)
Scholar:  "Such terrible villains..." (VO: unhappy, upset, muttering)
Gorim:  "That man had the patronage of many powerful houses." (VO: a warning, grim) *Go to tree 9*

3. Do as you like; it's nothing to me.
Vollney:  "Of course not." (VO: indignant)
Scholar:  "No, please! I--*Uungh!*"
[Cutscene - have Brutin Vollney approaching and stabbing the merchant.]
Gorim:  "That man had the patronage of many powerful houses." (VO: A warning, grim.) *Go to tree 9*

4. Make it bloody.
Scholar:  "No, please! I--*Uungh!*"
[Cutscene - have Brutin Vollney approaching and stabbing the merchant.]
Gorim:  "That man had the patronage of many powerful houses." (VO: A warning, grim.) *Go to tree 9*

TREE 8
1. Carry on with your work, scholar.
Scholar:  "Of course. I have much to document and organize." (VO: proud of himself)
Scholar:  "Good day, your Highness, and thank you." (VO: pleased, grateful) *END DIALOGUE*

2. You'll remember this when you write of me.
Scholar:  "Of course. Heroism and pity for the small man have always been hallmarks of House Aeducan." (VO: fawning, grateful)
Scholar:  "Now, I must try to make sense of these notes." (VO: a little irritated)
Scholar:  "Good day, your Highness, and thank you." (VO: pleased, grateful) *END DIALOGUE*

3. It was mostly to put Bruntin in his place.
Scholar:  "Whatever the motivation, you did a wonderful service for me this day." (VO: pleased, grateful)
Scholar:  "Now, I must try to make sense of these notes." (VO: a little irritated)
Scholar:  "Good day, your Highness, and thank you." (VO: pleased, grateful) *END DIALOGUE*

4. Perhaps a sign of your gratitude is in order?
Scholar:  "Of course. A copy of 'A History of Aeducan: Paragon, King, and Peacemaker' perhaps?" (VO: eager to please)
4a. That will do nicely, thank you.
Scholar:  "Congratulations on your commission." (VO: happy, pleased)
[ACTION: Give player book] *END DIALOGUE*
4b. I was thinking more of your gold.
Scholar:  "Uh... of course. Here you go. I'll just be about my work, then." (VO: A little shocked. Awkward, nervous)
[SET: Scholar_Robbed. ACTION: Give player gold] *END DIALOGUE*
4c. I was only kidding, old man.
Scholar:  "Ha! Such a sense of humor. I'll just be about my work, then..." (VO: pleased, joking, a little nervous) *END DIALOGUE*

TREE 9
1. They'll get over it.
Vollney:  "If they don't, House Vollney will be ready for them." (VO: smug)
Vollney:  "Excuse me, your Highness." (VO: respectful)
[ACTION: Vollney exits.] Gorim:  "He's a fool, and a low-placed one at that. House Meino was that scholar's patron. They will crush House Vollney like a warrior treading upon a centipede." (VO: scornful) *Go to tree 9, 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d*

2. It's always good to stir the pot from time to time.
Vollney:  "Too true. If this worm's patrons don't like this, they can take on House Vollney." (VO: smug)
Vollney:  "Excuse me, your Highness." (VO: respectful)
[ACTION: Vollney exits.]
Gorim:  "He's a fool, and a low-placed one at that. House Meino was that scholar's patron. They will crush House Vollney like a warrior treading upon a centipede." (VO: scornful) *Go to tree 9, 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d*

3. House Vollney has some new enemies, then.
Vollney:  "Nothing we can't handle." (VO: smug, overconfident)
Vollney:  "Excuse me, your Highness." (VO: respectful)
[ACTION: Vollney exits.]
Gorim:  "He's a fool, and a low-placed one at that. House Meino was that scholar's patron. They will crush House Vollney like a warrior treading upon a centipede." (VO: scornful)
3a. I do so love the games of the nobles.
Gorim:  "I don't think the poor nobles of Orzammar know what they're in for." (VO: a little gleeful) *END DIALOGUE*
3b. That's the way of the world, I suppose.
Gorim:  "There are other more pleasant diversions awaiting us, I'm sure." (VO: eager to move on) *END DIALOGUE*
3c. Perhaps I shouldn't have encouraged him.
Gorim:  "You hold none of the blame. Power and a small man will always end in mischief." (VO: consoling) *END DIALOGUE*
3d. All this conflict tires me. Let's go.
Gorim:  "As you say." (VO: polite) *END DIALOGUE*

------------------
If Brutin is gone, but scholar remains:

Scholar:  "My thanks. House Aeducan is blessed to have you." (VO: grateful)

@soignee -- No wonder Zevran is so unsure about where he stands with your dwarf since you're still hung up on Gorim. He's Rebound Guy! =p (Don't hurt me! Don't hurt me! NOT THE FACE! NOT THE FA---aaarghh!)

Vollney: "Exactly! Just because it happened, doesn't mean it's the truth, old man." (VO: passionate)

Lol, what? Not to argue semantics but...isn't that kind of the definition? Moron. And it looks like we did House Vollney a favor. I'm guessing 'robbed scholar' means the other scholar isn't happy to see you when you return to Orzammar? Does that have any other effects? And does killing him publicly or 'accidentally' have any effects besides comments nobles make if you click on them? Like no one seemed to notice I did anything when I killed him quietly but everyone sounded thrilled when I did it publicly.

@soignee -- No wonder Zevran is so unsure about where he stands with your dwarf since you're still hung up on Gorim. He's Rebound Guy! =p (Don't hurt me! Don't hurt me! NOT THE FACE! NOT THE FA---aaarghh!)

It's even more remarkable considering the DC has probably never even met Gorim before Denerim...

But, if that kid in Denerim would suffer from an "accident" all could go back to normal.

Well, yes, if they don't survive Denerim that does get rid of an inconvenience but I'm not about to wish death on a pregnant woman because she fell in love with Gorim. I mean, hypocritical much?

Would mere walls of stone shield Missa from the sheer manly virility that radiates from Gorim?

No, not a chance.

There were other parts of the town that had a more pressing need for your aid.

Oh I know that if I ever decide to do a romance with a DN, I'll go find Gorim first so I can be justifiably pissed and then have all the important romantic non-camp-specific dialouges right in front of him. Serves him right. Image IPB

IF: PC is Dwarf Noble
[CONDITION: Player did not resolve the noble origin scholar plot]
Scholar: "Call yourself Warden, but you are an exile underneath. The Paragons of this hall should not have to look at you." (Fires once.)
Scholar: "Leave me." (Fires every time after.)

Scholar: "Paragons, dwarves who achieve such greatness, they're considered ancestors even if they yet walk among us." (VO: reverent)
Scholar: "If only we had one now. A unifier. A voice like that... there would be no dissension."

Scholar: "Perhaps I don't want you to. A surfacer should not see us in this kind of disarray."
Scholar: "Goodbye, Warden. I hope you're not needed." *END DIALOGUE*

Is it me or are all the non-dwarf answers really stupid?

I seriously pity the man that scorns an Aeducan.

Oh yes. If they don't outright have him killed, they'll still find a way to make him suffer... Image IPB

Scholar: "Perhaps I don't want you to. A surfacer should not see us in this kind of disarray."

Oh, I got this line my first playthrough and since no one in the Hall of Heroes had anything interesting to say to a HN I didn't bother talking to them until today.

Hey, I need some Brosca expertise. I'm crowning the next King pretty much right now. I've supported Bhelen to this point because Rica told me to. If I switch sides at the last second, will Rica ever talk to me again? As in, bother to show up to my post-Archdemon celebration and/or funeral?

Actually, in general I'm on the fence right now with this character. I've been playing him as a good hearted but clumsy schlemiel who accidentally causes disasters. Like a blood splattered Charlie Brown. He accidentally destroys the mage tower, ill-advisedly leaves Zathrian in charge, etc. etc. Metagame, I know that in general, the Harrowmont ending fits in with this.

But A) I'd like to at least see Rica at the end and B) I was hoping to see Dagna's mage tower rebuilt in Orzammar and accidentally provoke the Chantry, and I don't know if that happens if Harrowmont closes up shop.

So help me out here. Anybody have a view of which result is most comically tragic?

Rica actually seems better off with Bhelen gone (although she disowns you and refuses to speak to you until he shows up for the coronation) since he's now the heir to House Aeducan and she dosn't have to let Bhelen boss her around. If you help Burkel the Chantry will want an exalted march on behalf of the slaughtered Andrastrian dwarves and if you don't but help Dagna there will be a circle of apostates that forms in Orzammar (how is anyone's guess given how closed down they are) and the chantry wants a divine march.

I'm not sure what the justificiation for picking Harrowmont is for a DC given he hates casteless, but a nice 'oh crap' ending for him would be deciding that Bhelen might not be good for your sister but since she has an Aeducan son she'll be fine without him to go with Harrowmont and, since he's a weaker ruler, givie him golems to help strengthen him...whoops.

I can't help Burkel, part of this playthrough's experience is zero levels of Coercion. So, looking forward to apostate disaster.

In terms of justification, it would just come down to how shifty Bhelen's acted throughout the whole deal. The character starts off entirely enthusiastic, rose-colored glasses, behind Rica all the way, blah blah blah. Just, y'know, Bhelen being Bhelen. He alienates the overly idealistic. Which this character is. Which is why he passed on the golems. He only *accidentally* causes atrocity.

EDIT- Bhelen's still pretty good too.  Even if his epilogue is more positive, he does have that great, "Cool.  Now execute Harrowmont," that makes you go, "WHOA!  What?!"

Siding with Harrowmont, though, allows you to wipe out half of the Assembly AND half the fighters in the Proving, all of Bhelen's fanatics in the street, and Vartag and some guards in the Palace. That's a lot more of an accidental death toll.

Ooooo... good point.

Yeah, definitely coming around to going with the last second switcheroo.  Immediate gratification of things spinning wildly out of control.
