The No/Minimal-Reload Run

Well... for the last month or so I have been trying, and without success to do a full No-Reload Run on Insanity. I've come close, but unfortunately I have so far been unable to finish the game. The furthest I ever got thus far is with my Soldier, up until Legion's loyalty mission. At that point, I forgot to AI Hack a Hunter, got flanked, and that was the end of my attempt.
I do wonder if anyone has ever been able to do this so far. I suppose I should have taken shock trooper and hardened adrenaline rush, but I opted for a more damaging build. Anyway, I'll share some experiences I've had here, with the hopes that it'll minimize the amount of dying everyone else will have to do. Quick note, I'm playing on the xbox 360... I imagine a truly perfect playthrough would be more feasable on the pc due to superior aiming and control. I'd love it if any pc users can share their thoughts on this.
1. What I mean by No-Reload Run means: You complete all recruitment missions, all loyalty missions, and all collector missions without ever getting killed once. I've come pretty close to this, but again.. so far I've come up short.
2. There are a few things to keep in mind to maximize survivability. First, having full control of your own character at all times is absolutely vital. That means, anything that can compromise that by knocking you out of cover or stun locking must die immediately and on sight. I'm writing from the perspective of a soldier, but the principles here should be applicable to any class really.
- Flankers die first! That means, Fenris Mechs, Pyro's, Varen... you name it. These things love to flank and if you ignore em for more than a few seconds, you can find yourself in a bad situation. Pyro's are easy to kill, just shred their armor down and have an overload handy. The Varen/Mechs are also not that hard. If you're a soldier, just blast their face as soon as they get into range. AR should make the process relatively easy, but powers will also do the trick if you're another class.
Also on this note: Geth! These things seem to flank you alot more than any other enemy. It's not just the hunters either, it's the regular grunts. The best way to deal with them is one simple power AI Hack. This comes in especially handy on Tali's loyalty mission, and on Legion's. Whenever you get the chance and there's more than a few Geth, AI hack immediately. The other Geth will almost exclusively focus on the hacked target leaving them open to you killing them all. Personally, I'd recommend hacking a hunter if you can manage it. It shouldn't be that hard for a soldier to burn down their shields (revenant + disruptor rounds does the trick). Soon as you do it, have Tali/Legion hack em and you now have a wonderful shield to draw enemy fire.
3. Learn to love the M9-Cain. It's there for a reason. There are some parts in the game that just do not have any really good cover for you to rely on. For those parts, the Mcain is your bread and butter. A few such places of note:
- Recruit the Krogan: Lets face it, fighting Jedore is a pain in the ****. The cover is just too wonky. The way it's set up, a stray missile from the heavy mech or from Jedore herself can knock you out of cover. If this happens at a bad time (like a Krogan flanking you and the Heavy Mech shooting its machine gun), you can quickly wind up eating floor. You can of course solve all your problems here by simply... you guessed it.... using the Mcain. Just start charging it up for two seconds, open the door to Jedore's chamber, and shoot her in the face. If the Heavy Mech has any health left at all... you can clean him up easily because the Krogan will not spawn once Jedore is dead.
- Horizon: Undeniably, the hardest part on this mission is the two scions and husks that you encounter right after speaking to the mechanic. So how do we deal with this?... quickly run to the left to the cover that looks like a stack of tires. Charge up the McCain till it's almost ready, then quickly pop out and blast the scions in the face. From here on out, it's all about taking down harbinger and the wave of collectors till you get to the praetorian fight. A side note, on the second wave of collectors here (the one right before the praetorian), they will be accompanied by husks. Fastest way to deal with this, is to run all the way to the other side, opposite from where the collectors landed. The husks will chase you much faster, leaving the collectors behind. Kill em off while you're at the other end of the map, and then proceed to mop up the collectors.
- Collector Ship: I think if we took a poll of the most hated mission in the game, it would be this one. Bioware really did make it very trap like, in the sense that it's bloody easy to die at this part. The worst problem is the beginning, where you have the platforms coming in. Best way to handle it though, is with a well placed Mcain shot at the beginning. Just as the first platfor is about to touch down, fire a shot at it. It doesn't even have to hit any collector, just as long as it hits the platform itself. It should kill the first three, and if it's done right, will also damage the scion. After this, quickly switch to your viper and dps the first scion down as fast as you can. If you've done it properly, you should now have alot more room to maneuver. Keep your squadmates at the platform you started at, and move yourself to another position. Your squadmates will now draw a bunch of enemy fire which should make your life easier. I don't know about others, but I found that killing the second scion with your viper asap to be a solid strategy. Their shockwave's can knock you back and stun, which for a no-reload run.. is an absolute no no. So if you can, pop an AR and dps that sucker down.
These are the three big missions that I've found the Mcain to be a definite life saver, and will greatly minimize your chances of getting killed.
That's about it for now. I'll add various strategies to the other missions if people are interested, as I realize that the info here is rather basic.
Also, I realize that a no-reload attempt in many ways is needlessly punishing, because if you fail on something like the collector ship, you would have to go back 10 hours to attempt the run again. That's why a perfect playthough might be the goal, but minimal-reload is nothing to scoff at either. If anyone wants to try it, lemme know how it goes.
Good luck!

When I first read the title, I honestly thought you were playing through the game without ever reloading your weapon.

Thought the same thing....Not dying is impressive but that would be truly awesome.

However, I specifically avoided a bunch of dangerous missions, such as the aforementioned Legion loyalty.

I remember someone else complaining about how there is no perma-death difficulty in ME2...

I won't have the patience to do a no re-load run, but I applaud your self-discipline.

That's a little too far, IMO ... I may like no reload runs, but I don't actually start from the very beginning.
I have a save at the armour customisation point on the cerberus base (at the end of awakening).
'cos there's a difference between wanting a challenge, and suffering through the opening cinematic and tutorial level repeatedly.

Sounds cool. Did you do it on xbox or on pc?
And yes, it doesn't really have much of a reward beyond bragging rights. It's a pretty tough thing to do if you don't skip any of the main missions/loyalty quests. I tried it a bunch of times but hte furthest I got was legion's loyalty. *sigh* I was heartbroken when that one failed

PC.
I reckon I'd have a lot of problems on an xbox, 'cos I'm hooked on:
My extremely high framerates.
Hotkeys ... I still get upset that there aren't more hotkeys and/or custom keybindings.
Shooting stuff with a mouse.
To the point where I'll have FRAPS running, and occasionally my FPS would drop to about 48 or so ... and I'll start missing shots due to graphics lag.
Ok, to be fair I haven't actually seen what the framerates are like on the xbox, but surely they aren't a match for my high end gaming rig?

If 48fps upsets you then the xbox will give you a heart attack. It's actually not so bad, and is pretty fluent, compared to some console games but nothing like the PC.

Framerate acceleration, if you will. I hate that stuff. Really throws off timing .. especially in fighting games like Street Fighter 4.

ThatAverageGatsby does this in one of his walk throughs (I think the engineer, but I'm not sure). BTW, I shameless stole the idea from him, so all credit to him.
I've wanted to try this, but I am just way to careless to do anything more than get frustrated. I'd just forget about some varren and BLAM, game over man, game over!

There is an easier way to deal with the Scions. Open the door, but do not go through it. Equip your sniper rifle, and zoom in to the left and right of the wall that holds the console to be hacked. You will see the gun of one Scion poking out to the left, and the hunch of the other poking out to the right. Aiming caerfully, you can direct your squaddies powers onto them through the scope, as well as taking potshots yourself. Once thye pair of them are down, its a clear run to the console, as the husks dont spawn if the Scions are down.
If you dont have a sniper rifle, you acn do the same with the heavy pistol, although it takes a lot more skill/luck aiming.
That leaves just the collectors, harbinger, 2nd wave of husks, and the Praetorion.
