Closed down DA:O last night and I saw that every last icon on my desktop had disappeared.
They were there when I started up the computer and started playing DA:O.
The icons are still gone this morning when I started up the PC.
I don't see how the game could do this, but it seems to be the only thing that changed between the icons existence and disappearance.
Also, if I open the Desktop option in the toolbar, it still lists all of the icons that normally appear, as if they are still there.
There are also periods when my computer has a brief hiccup,  alot of things, especially my mouse pointer just seem to freeze in place for a few seconds.
I'm running a Norton Internet Security scan, but I ran one yesterday and didn't find anything.

What you need to do is to rebuild your icon-cache. Windows should be doing this automatically but appears that yours isn't. Could you tell us what version of windows you are running?

You could always go into task manager and run explorer.exe That ought to fix it.

Here’s how to go about rebuilding your Windows Vista Icon Cache:

   1. Kill Explorer (use the Task Manager to do this)
   2. Open the command prompt and go to: %USERPROFILE%\\AppData\\Local
   3. Unhide the IconCache.db file with the following command: attrib -h IconCache.db
   4. Delete the IconCache.db file: del IconCache.db
   5. Start Explorer (or restart your computer)

Try this and let us know how things work out.

No effect.

Something I forgot to mention in my OP, was that last night, when I noticed the icons had disappeared, I saw a strange little icon in my taskbar. No clue what program it belonged to, but it said that Presentation mode was active, so I right clicked and then closed it. I might have seen it for a second in the taskbar icons again when the PC was starting up.

Hopefully that helps...

Presentation mode? Hmm, is this a laptop you're using?

Check your Mobility Center (Search for it in Windows help if you don't know where it's located - I'm on a stationary computer here so I dont have it installed). There should be a setting to turn on and off Presentation mode there. Try enabling and disabling it. I'm thinking your computer might have gotten stuck in Presentation mode.

Enabled and disabled it, haven't noticed anything change.
Tried to put a shortcut on the desktop, dropped it on there and it disappeared.

Check what programs are started at startup (run the program msconfig - under startup) and disable anything that looks out of the ordinary. I'm thinking you might have some viewer software starting or something similar which messes up your desktop. Another thing you might want to try is changing the theme for windows. This can sometimes reset some settings to default. Also, if you're using the Sidebar application, you might want to switch it off and see if things change.

I deleted several gigabytes of stuff that was on my desktop, seems to have helped a little, I'm down to only 1 GB on my dekstop :P Now the icons will appear for a short while before they disappear on log in.
Some odd things going on though. Accounts were messed with while I was trying to determine what was going on.
My taskbar is now disappearing underneath windows, and my start menu looks like classic instead of vista, I don't like it.
For some reason, presentation mode is activated everytime I log in....

Good news.

Made my icons re-appear by going into task manager, closing down the explorer.exe process, then re-creating it with the application tab area.

Unfortunately, my taskbar still disappears when I open IE, and my start menu still looks like classic, it says WindowsVista on the side, but it's white and msall instead of large and a kind of black-transparent.
