Hi all,
sorry in advance for once more posting a (probably) all too familiar problem. I installed ME1 (from a DVD I bought), but it does not start when I klick on play.. After visiting this site I installed the patches (am now at version 1.02) but still have the same problem - nothing happens. I spent some time browsing the forum pages but unfortunately have not found a solution to my problem.  I am almost sure that the hardware is good enough. Anyway here is some information about my PC (part of DXDIAG report):

Any help greatly appreciated! And yes, english is not my native tongue .

Kind regards
Meanandugl

Since you say "when I click on play" I assume you're trying to run it from the launcher? Maybe the problem lies with the launcher and not the game. Try browsing to where it's installed (Probably something like C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\Mass Effect\\), go into the Binaries folder, and run MassEffect.exe directly.

I'm having the same problem. Running it directly doesn't solve it.

The specifics of the original poster's abend are still far too nebulous here.  No error messages at all?  Exactly HOW does it act when you try running it?

For the second member with the "Me, Too" post, this one is a poor choice to try to ride the coat-tails on, since it's so vague.  You need a separate message of your own, and both of you need to review Chris' instructions on how to report your problem (I have quoted him, and bumped the quoted material to the current page).

@ Gorath Alpha,

while I appreciate that you answered, the content of your answer leaves me somewhat helpless. Even after double-checking on Chris' guide how to report a problem I still do not know what kind of information you are missing. Anyway, this time I will stick to the suggeseted procedure more closely.

The following is copied from Chris' guidelines, My answers are added directly below the questions:

1. It’s important to identify which product is experiencing the problem.

a. Is it the console version or the PC version? (Edit: Most of this is strictly applicable to the PC version.)

answer: PC version

b. Media: physical disk or digital download (and which vendor)

answer: physical disk, ME 1 by EA classics, bought in Germany some weeks back.

2. System Details

a. Processor / Core count / Core Speed / Main RAM Amount

answer: Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.6GHz

Memory: 4096MB RAM

b. Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't help -- Edited: only ATI / nVIDIA cards are supported)

answer: don't know exactly what information you need. Here is the long version:

Card name: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730

Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.

Chip type: ATI display adapter (0x68C0)

DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)

Device Key: Enum\\\\PCI\\\\VEN_1002&DEV_68C0&SUBSYS_1C221043&REV_00

Rank Of Driver: 00E60001

hope that's all info one needs regarding this part. If not let me know.

c. Sound Adapter / Driver Version

answer: again, sorry for providing probably too much data:

Description: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)

Default Sound Playback: Yes

Default Voice Playback: Yes

Hardware ID: HDAUDIO\\\\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0269&SUBSYS_104313D3&REV_1000

Driver Name: RTKVHD64.sys

Driver Version: 6.00.0001.5995 (English)

d. Operating System (& service pack if applicable)

answer: Windows 7 64-bit

e. Direct X Version

answer: DirectX Version: DirectX 11

3. Problem Details

a. When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do.

b. What? What is the nature of the problem that you’re seeing?

answer: I try to answer as detailed as I can: I start Me 1 either from the desktop button or the available programs after pressing on the windows start button. In each case a ME 1 menu (don't know exact name for this little screen) is opened on the desktop. I can hear a soundtrack at this point, can access the website, the documentation, the configuration menu and so on. All this works without problems. However, when I try to start the game by pressing the "Spielen" (Play) button, the little ME 1 screen disappears from the desktop, the sandclock sign (or the Win 7 equivalent sign) appears for a few seconds, disappears again, but nothing else happens. There are no more visible signs that the program or parts of it started at all, and the task manager does not show any ME1 related programs running (at least none that I as a layman could identify as such).

Bye the way this whole procedure is the same with or without the ME 1 DVD inserted into the DVD player.

c. When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only after so many hours of play?

answer: always right at the start, I do not get any further

d. Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does it occur everywhere?

answer doesn't make sense in my case

e. Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?

answer doesn't make sense in my case.

I hope that this way to describe a ME1-problem is now in accordance with the forum guidelines. Again, thanks in advance to everybody who can help me out.

Kind regards

Meanandugl

It was the other poster who ignored the guidelines, not you. GA just wants to know if you get an error message.

Anyway, have you tried running in Windows XP compatible mode and as administrator? Right click the game executable and go to properties -> compatibility.

Hello,

On Windows 7, please go to "Control Panel", then "System and Security", then click "Action Center", then in the Maintenance section there is a "View problems to report" link. See if "Mass Effect" is in this list, and if so, try clicking the "View Technical Details" link and give us any info you can.

Thanks.

Hi Fredvdp, hi eshrafel,

I did as you suggested (hopefully) and bingo, got a message: General protection fault, followed by a ton of signs (starting with: History: ...) I do not understand.

What next?

Again, thanks for your help. I really would love to get this game running.

Kind regards

GPFs are supposedly endemic in the UT3 game engine, but ME-1 mostly had them with the series of Geforce video drivers between about 1.4x and 1.82 (yes, I saw the Radeon mentioned in the DxDiag report).  Based on that past behavior, I would be guessing you should try a different, fairly recent, video driver.

@Gorath Alpha and the other forum experts,

wow, you guys must spend really a lot of time browsing the forum-pages and trying to help out not-so-educated (at least regarding technical issues) people like me. Thanks for that. Now to your last post: You suggest to update the graph card driver, correct? Never occurred to me that this might solve the problem given that my notebook (and the Radeon that's built in) are almost brand new.

Even when something is brand new, you have to get the latest drivers, as it doesn't always happen automatically. I bought a 'brand new' Radeon video card, installed the drivers that came with the disc, yet still had to go to the site and get the newest version to be up to date.

task: get fairly recent video driver
Easier said than done. My PC offered to search (online I guess) for video card driver updates, and came back with the answer that the driver is up to date. However, the release date was sometime in Q4 2009. Not convinced I visited both the ATI and Asus websites. ATI offers a fairly recent ATI catalyst driver but also says: "Please check with your system vendor for the most recent drivers for your notebook". Asus doesn't offer new video card driver versions for my particular notebook, but pretty new Win7 64 drivers for several ATI graphics cards. The one I have (a 5730) is not mentioned, but a 5670, and that may be technically more or less the same like my card.
You guessed right, I am lost again. Shall I go for the ATI catalyst driver, try the Asus Win7 64 driver (although my card is not exactly mentioned) or play it safe and don't do anything at all given that there is no obvious perfect fit - or try something entirely different?

Kind regards

Does the DVD version even support 64-bit OS?

You can find the latest driver here:

http://game.amd.com/...windows-7-64bit

"Display Driver Only" should do the trick if you don't want CCC.

Kya, are you sure Meanandugl should be using the main Catalyst driver for a laptop card? I know Nvidia has started supporting their laptop chips as part of the main driver package, but I'm not so sure about ATI.

Nope, ATI doesn't, and from the reasoning I gather that they won't. *le sigh*

Ask ASUS, then.

Several web sites offer free downloads of modified officiial drivers, including Omega.  The Omega modified ones aren't updated very often; I don't know about any others.  Personally, I refuse to cripple my games by trying to rely on hardware with a far different design criteria than gaming, and therefore (for any use other than eMail when I travel), I ignore laptops entirely.

I bought ME1 off Steam, and while it installed fine, it refuses to run.

I click on the icon in Steam, my mouse cursor displays the 'thinking' icon, then nothing happens.

I used Windows 7 32 bit, I don't know how to run games in compatibility mode from within Steam.

This is only the second game that hasn't run on my PC, with the first being BioShock
