The game itself is a lot of fun, but this particular aspect is an absolute chore, no fun, absolutely tedious.

Addressed how? Everyone is aware there is an issue with it. BioWare will probably move to change it since they implemented it because the Mako was also unpopular (presumably), but are you asking if it will be changed in a patch? If so, doubtful because it is an established game element. Will it be changed in ME3? Most likely.

It is stuck in ME2 forever! ME3, however will most likely have an improved system for gathering resources.

they could try a heat map on planets depicting the large resource deposits

I stopped gathering resources after the 3rd playthrough.

It really is a punishment for us gaming parents that have serious playtime limitations. Maybe a resources jackpot in some DLC missions...

It's not so bad the first time around but on subsequent playthroughs it's really, really annoying. Personally I'd wish they increased yields by a factor of ... say, 5. That would solve the problem for me, I guess. I can deal with doing 20 minutes of "work" to get my upgrades.

Honestly they could remove the whole resource system entirely and it would be an improvement.

Not that you can't have a good resource/research system, but the way it was implemented simply isn't fun.

It's a lot more tolerable if you only do a little bit after each mission. I usually do like 1/3rd of a planet after each mission.

I don't mind scanning so much now that I'm quite fast at it ... except for one thing.

Platinum

Why does everything I want cost platinum? Medigel upgrades, Sniper upgrades, Shotgun upgrades, Claymore for grunt, Widow for legion, vitality and shield boosts for grunt and legion, removing scars ...

If so many things require platinum, wouldn't it make sense for the sake of "game balance" or just "game being less irritating" to make platinum the most common mineral you find?

Edit:
Forgot the Thanix Magn.

Takes me 5-7 minutes to scan and strip-mine a planet. Normally do one or two before each recruitment & loyalty mission.

If playing paragon i never bother with the med bay upgrade, as the scars will heal themselves.

make the thing twice as big. That way we still have to scan but it would be faster

Exactly! I hate it when I have less then 500 Platinum but yet for another mineral I have over 100k of it but have nothing to do with it. I don't really care about healing scars because I usually let them progress but honestly being an Infiltrator you need Platinum.

Its especially annoying to scan on the 360 and I wish they had an option to change your button configuration to allow you to scan using the "A" button and "X" button or something. Having to keep hitting the trigger is a bit annoying.

Honestly, I had a lot more of an issue with scanning before I realized that

A. Most of it should be done after getting the Normandy upgrades to its range and speed

B. Just depleting every significant spot of the worlds you have to scan anyway for extra missions and loyalty quests, when combined with the resources you get for starting the game with ME1 data and the bits you find on various missions, will provide you with almost enough resources for everything you want.

You really only have to resource-scan a few planets out of all of the ones available, and it's not as terrible as it could be once it's upgraded. I'm not a fan of the process, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as it could be.

If new game plus was implimented as it should have been there would have been no need to rescan.  I also hate that you can never do the first 4 recruit missions with either the biotic or tech cooldown bonuses.  I love this game, but there were so many stupid decisions on things that should have been obvious.  How could they have thought planet scanning for every subsequent playthru was a good idea?

This is the part I don't get. I'm all for RPGs having an element of grinding that requires serious effort, but I really want to know who the hell thought planet scanning was such a brilliant and fun idea that it made sense to have people do it over and over again in every playthrough.

Ironically enough, on my recent playthroughs platinum was actually the first resource I finished gathering. Iridium was actually the last for me. I finished all my mining before I even recruited my 3rd teammate.

Planet scanning = mine minesweeper without the mines.
Not a great idea!

Resource gathering missions would have made more sense.
Have a notice board for people asking for help
e.g.
- Protect a refinery from mercs
- Become a Bounty Hunter and find a target.

If you could add some randomness to the types of enemies faced then it would encourage replayability. Useful when you just have some time for a few good battles but cant be bothered with the depth of going through the story.

I’m on my second play though on insane and I have not mined a single planet. At first it was fun, but after a while it gets a tat bit annoying.

Hopefully ME3 just equips the Normandy with it's own Death Star Laser. Screw scanning, just blast the dammed rock into chunks and tow off what you want.

Once you have the Long Service bonus from completing the game once with any character, you can still complete every main mission and side mission and save every squadmate without ever having to mine for minerals directly.

I read in the latest issue of GAME INFORMER that the BIOWARE person being interviewed said "There have been some people who have played this game said that they found it strangely addicting".
I find it more annoying than anything. I missed the old format where it's "scan" then ding, got minerals. however it was a single mineral like 'heavy, light, rare, gas' or whatever while 2 has a variety as you scan a planet.
However what annoys me more is I tend to get the music lapping over the sound effects when I click on exit when I want to upgrade me, my team, or the Normandy and recently it got bad at one point where the music got super loud because it echoed unessesarlly.
I think they need to change the format of planet scanning again and at least try to have a happy medium between the two for 3.

Eh, yeah it still sucks, but i'm not bothered by it near as much as I was at the beginning. I make sure to get the advanced mineral scanner asap, and now I just mine planets until they are "poor" and then move on instead of how I was painstakingly depleting every planet. Can't let those minerals go to waste right?

There are more than enough planets to just scan to poor, or even moderate for that matter and get all you need. Definately a chore though, just not as bad for me now as it was.
