There's going to be an adjustment period.

I haven't played an Engineer yet (planning to when I start a new game for the Kasumi DLC), but from what I've seen, it looks like your best weapon is the distraction of the combat drone while you mow down your enemies.

You can live with Drone 1 for ages, though ... 'cos that 1 point does the job just fine.

Personally, my favourite build order on engineer goes:

Overload 2, Incinerate 1-3, then passive.

Even in early game, the 3s recharge on drone is short enough to drop drone first, then strip defenses.

I loved my Engineer with Dominate. I used Tali and Legion as soon as I could and an a squad of Engineers -- at some points I could have 8-9 "allies" on the field with three Drones and AI hacks. Too bad the squaddies Drone cooldown is so long, you could practically keep the field distracted the entire fight.

And that's the biggest adjustment between the Vanguard and Engineer play-styles; you go from jumping down the enemies throat to tapping their shoulder and running the other way (proverbially speaking).

Consider it like the difference between playing a fighter in DA, to playing a mage. Its a calls thats designed to hang back to harry and harrass the enemy to aid support to the front liners. Once I got the sniper rifle training on the collector ship, i found my playstyle to become more like an infiltrator. Drop a drone to support the front line, then flank the enemy and take them down with sniper fire, incinerate and cryo.

In my experience, it's not really difficult to adjust to different classes. The weapons combat, which dominates this game, is static and doesn't really change from class to class too much. You're still going to be shooting guns. The only difference is the powers you get and how offensive/defensive your class is. It really shouldn't be that bad

You can play it fairly aggressively
-Drone to distract 1 enemy, strip others defences down with squad skills, cryo blast the area, run in and punch them to death.
Its the cryo that allows you to get physical with a more 'in your face' playstyle.

AverageGatsbys vid is what got me into engineers.

Being a hardened Vangaurd-aholic, the Engineer is fun as hell.  There's none of the in-you-face stomping like the 'guard, but all the varied abilities the Engi brings to the field make them a swiss army knife.

Shields?  Thats why god made Overload.
Armor?  Incinerate is your buddy
Enemies behind cover?  Well, with the proper application of Combat Drone, they won't be for long!

Barriers are a bit of a problem, but the Engi isn't alone there.  Luckily, our SMG's are very good at tearing them down, and the Heavy Pistol is a solid weapon overall.

If you have access to bonus powers, it's a choice between Warp or AP ammo.  The other abilities have their perks (Reave and Slam especially) but picking up an ammo power shores up the Engineers only realy weak point: lack of hitting power.  Shredder doesn't count.  Hell, pickit it up should earn Shep extra XP and an acheivement for intentioanlly gimping herself.

When it comes time to snag a new weapon training skill, going with AR's is a solid choice.  It's an all around good weapon for short and medium range, and adds even more utility.

Vangaurd is awesome for just wrecking faces.  Engineers walk in, look about, and know that they own the room.  They own you.
