Since the ME2 developers were willing to steal learn from other companies about how to make better shooter mechanics, they should steal use ideas from World of Warcraft (and other MMOs) about combining Global and Individual cooldowns for abilities.

So for anyone that doesn't know, in WoW, when you use any ability, it causes 2 different cooldowns to occur.  The first one is a 1.5 second global cooldown where you cannot use any of your abilities; the second is a cooldown for the ability that was used, which is different for each ability.

For an idea about how this will work in ME, I will use a vanguard with Barrier and assume a 2 second global cooldown is in place.

So at the start of a fight, I use Barrier and a 2 second global cooldown occurs.  At the end of these 2 seconds, I can now Charge but I can't use Barrier again for another 10 seconds.   After I charge, another 2 second global CD occurs after which I can't use Charge again for another 4 seconds or Barrier for another 8 seconds, BUT I can use Pull.

So in the end, I was able to use a better variation of abilities but was still limited on how much I can use them.  This is probably more a suggestion for ME3 since this would probably make encounters way too easy now, but it would prevent players from being pigionholed into only using 1 or 2 powers and ignoring the rest.

So good idea or pretty retarded and I don't know what I am talking about? (At least one person will probably just quote me on the last part ;) )

You're a retard. Shut up.

Just kidding.

No, no, its a good idea. However, you even said it - non shared cooldowns bring the potential of making it too easy. I recall the IFF mission on my adept - area reave followed by singularity was insta death for all the poor husks. If I didn't have to run a circle around the platform between abilities I may have just taken a nap mid combat. . .

However, I could also see a great potential for making the game more tactical with non-shared cool downs. Make cool ability combinations like were done in Dragon Age, or something to that extent. Personally, I think the best change made to combat in ME would be to not have convenient waist high walls every time you enter combat. . .

Quoted from my own post in the poll:

If you think about it, there is somewhat of a GCD. You have to cast the first ability (I um, typed spell first, tee hee) then reset, and ramp up for the next. Its not a GCD in the sense of wow's GCDs (the little timer on your abilities) but you sort of have one built in via the animations.

WOW's GCD is more to compensate for latency and for balance. Its there to prevent players from using a macro and cast 10 spells in half a second.

Its not really required in ME as your character can only cast 1 ability at one time(+2 from your allies).

Your idea is similar to ME1's combat system, just that there was no GCD. The result was that ME1 abilities had very long cool-downs. At low levels, it made the game quite boring because you had to wait 1 minute (very long) to use that throw/pull/overload.

Compared to ME2 where even as a level one adept, you could throw many more blue balls of biotic bang every few seconds. Powers could have short CDs and still not feel overpowered due to the GCD.

It terms of tactics, ME1's system would require you to know the fights and save that particular ability for that part of the battle. ME2's system would require you to decide every GCD which is the best power to use at that point of the fight. So...take your pick.

Personally I'd be fine with each power just being on it's own cooldown. That's easy to implement and might actually make me use any power besides Singularity and Warp on my Adept.

There are a bunch of cool things you can do with cooldowns to balance abilities and make them play differently.

A recent trend in games has been to get rid of the mana bar and do all the limiting through cooldown; there are a lot of advantages to it and I'm looking froward to seeing how far devs can push it.

The current global cooldown is too limiting and a disproportionate nerf to adepts. With my biotic all I ever did throughout the game was spam warp. Why cc the mobs when you can just snipe warps at them from around corners? Why use barrier when I can just hide behind a waist high wall that's immune to damage? And if it's to protect you from flanking why'd you let yourself be flanked in the first place?

I don't mind the cooldowns but if this subject is pertaining to the Ammo mods and powers useing the same cooldown I agree it should be seperate. However I missed the old format where you buy or find the ammo mods and equip it on a gun. yeah it ate up space (90% of my item issue in 1) but they help. I am glad I don't have to worry about freeing space for a new gun or ammo mod in 2 but I hate haveing to mod, shoot, mod, shoot, mod, shoot a boss when I could do things like in one where my gun is premod to shoot Ice rounds or whatever while I can use my powers like warp, barrier, or geth shield to kick butt. I have died due modding a gun with ice and waiting for the cooldown to use warp or charge a few times.
