I find the game on insanity pretty easy with a Sentinel and Grunt and (usually) Miranda. Grunt as a meat shield to take some of the heat off me squad incendiary ammo to stun-lock and burn enemies. With two sets of overload and two sets of Warp enemy defences just never last, that coupled with the fact that Assault armor and Grunt sop up massive amounts of damage means a pretty sturdy team.

Don't get discouraged though, you just need practice.

With the right squadmates, the collector platforms are easy on any class. Thane is probably one of the most useful squadmates to have there, because he has warp for barrier and armor, his sniper is really effective, and he has throw to insta-kill unprotected collectors near the ledge. He's especially useful if you're a vanguard or an adept, since you can combine your pull with his throw or warp. Other useful squadmates are Jacob with pull and squad incendiary and Mordin with Full Cryo Blast (4.5 second cooldown) and incinerate. I wouldn't take Miranda on that mission, because she only has Warp that you can actually use and other than that she's not much use.

It's also very important to position yourself right in order to avoid the Scions killing you or your teammates in the line of fire. Having done that part lots of times, I can say one of the best tactics is the following.

1) Put your squadmates behind the first cover in the beginning, and go to the front cover on the left of the first arriving platform. Stay there until you've cleared the first platform, and just ignore the scions for now.

2) Take cover behind the low cover right in front of the next arriving platform. The scions will target you, but they can't hurt you unless you're out of cover. Clearing the platform shouldn't be too hard - it's even possible to do it without anyone turning into Harbringer.

3) Kill the scion on the right, which will trigger the arrival of the third platform. Depending on your class, you'll want to play this part defensively or aggressively. For example, Vanguards and Revenant-Soldiers should probably advance to the higher platform, while defensive classes or those with Widow work better from behind the cover on the first platform that arrived on the right.

4) Once you're done with the last collectors, you can safely take out the scion.

I played the initial collector mission going in as an engineer with Jack and Miranda. We went in cold. My heavy weapon was the arch-projector ( it can take out the collector soldiers with about 3 or 4 pulls but does almost nothing the the harbinger collector boss ). Thing is, for some reason the mission started me out with only 1 charge in the damn thing even though I ended my previous mission with 4 inside of it! I found Jack to to be much more useful than Miranda. Jack could shock wave ( I call it the thundering bowling ball ) that can make at least 2 enemies fly off the first platform. I have Miranda use her slam that can " potentially " fly an enemy off the platform. It doesn't always work depending on their positioning. With the arc-projector depleted by the time the 3rd platform came in and before it even landed, one of the collector soldiers was already transforming into harbinger. Even while trying to keep him at a distance with my drone distracting him, he easily destroyed them and continued to make his way closer. With nowhere to go, given the minimalist cover and extremely small area with no walls or standing cover, sticking my head up to fire using my last resort as my other powers ( freeze, warp ammunition, take over biotics ) proved inaffectual against him. My most powerful weapon is the sniper rifle wich did alot of damage to the collector soldiers was all but depleted as well as my hand canon. Even the soldiers can take some serious damage on hardcore setting before going down. I eventually managed though. Getting through the ship and off the base wasn't nearly as hard with plenty of cover to manuever around to give my biotics time to recharge. Been on 3 loyalty missions since ( Samara, Doc, and Grunt ) and recruited Tali and so far am doing fine now that I'm off that accursed ship! Anyone else made it through on hardcore or insanity with the engineer? Any powers you can reccomend I get rid of or pick up from squadmates? Thanks and here looking forward to the Kasumi DLC!

I've had one Engineer playthrough on Insanity. I took the sniper rifle as well, which was a lot of help. But the single most powerful ability of the engineer is the drone - the other powers are just essentially damage dealers. Max out attack drone as fast as possible, and you can distract enemies and create congestions with it. Especially with a sniper engineer, it's more important to use the drone on close targets rather than stronger targets. Also, it's often worth it to use the drone offensively, I mean as a way to make the enemy vulnerable to your attacks.

Nothing wrong with that, mate. B)

I play almost exclusively on Veteran, after first trying Normal and then beating Hardcore (which was a right arse, like the OP says). Armored husks and varen don't make sense, IMHO, nor does armor hampering the use of physics-based attacks (concussive shot, pull/throw, etc.). Reave is almost like a reusable medkit, and is one of the best, if not the best, bonus power in the entire game. I put it on all my Shepards.

I'm doing an Insanity run with an Engineer right now, following a run on Hardcore that I finished a couple of days ago. Haven't yet reached the Collector Ship, so it'll be interesting to see how that works out. I've beaten the game on Insanity maybe five times, but always as a Soldier. I actually switched because it was getting boring (I've never played any other class, probably because I played Modern Warfare 2 right before...), and I wanted to experiment with a more indirect play style. And I can say this - you don't really understand how devastating the Soldier is in combat until you play something else. <_<

There are some interesting resources for Engineer on Insanity. ThatAverageGatsby has an awesome series of videos on youtube explaining useful tactics. I got some very useful tips from that, but I follow a somewhat different philosophy - he prefers to avoid squadmate power usage, while I get a real kick out of positioning squadmates and using their powers as heavily as my own. You'd be surprised at the advantage good positioning and coordination will give you - enemies shooting in one direction get shot at from another, stealing their territory forces them to bunch up (which makes my area effect powers really happy), they shoot less because they can't shoot through each other, and always keep getting forced out of cover.

The major reason you get killed as an Engineer (maybe also as an Adept, but I have no personal experience here) is because you're letting the enemy dictate your actions. You want to seize the initiative right from the start, and keep it. For example, you toss out your drone right at the start of the fight, and use the brief period of confusion to move your squad to commanding positions. Then you slowly push forward until enough enemies have been finished off to create another opportunity, and then strike another decisive blow. Rinse and repeat, with infinite variations. ^_^

In fact, now that I think about it, that's why you play the game on Insanity - solving these tactical problems is what gives you the real high.

It also helps to scale up gradually. I started this engineer with Hardcore (actually Veteran, but it was so boring I raised it after Freedom's Progress) and moved up to Insanity now. With my Soldier, I played once at each level from Normal up to Insanity. New challenges each time, more fun! :wizard:

I have done Insanity on all my playthroughs, never did anything less. Infiltrator with assault rifle owns. I am also an avid shooter fan and played all Halos on Legendary like 100 times, each, and both modern warfares on Veteran.

I am used to killing things before they kill me. I love the challenge.

It is a game after all. I am of that generation where games are meant to  be a bit of fun.
I have done my insanity run and have no inclination to do it again. While I am sure many find the challenge of insanity fun, I don't . After a day at work I have no desire to be aggravated in my leisure time. I play on veteran with no bonus skill.

Just did a run through with a renegade soldier, used the avenger AR and took the Widow. Used Garuus and Zaaed as my squaddies everywhere I could - (excluding loyalty of course). It was a hoot.

I have just started my third playthrough this time on Hardcore, its not been as hard as I thought it would be although took me 12 times to get through parts on Horizon (I'm a casual gamer and according to my partner a crap shooter - he's a hardcore gamer though and giving me some tips) I havent had to adjust the setting yet, but dying multiple times just sucks and as soon as the enjoyment factor is gone I'm all for bringing it down a notch so totally with you on that one katatonic717! Also I'd like to keep my TV screen in tact without a 360 controller smashed into the centre of it!

You think normal is too hard?

I draw the line at veteran in ME2. Husks with armor just seems wrong. They are fodder, not shock troopers.
