that is exactly what nerds love. A woman with ambigious looks (looks depend on what the community fantasizes, and they are subject to anything possible) saying that the player is so awesome.

Hurry, Generalization Man, there are some people from another religion over here who need your help!

For Example: I thought Wrex and Miranda would have huge fan bases, instead they aren't even in the top tier of peoples favorite characters. I also had no clue that Tali was SO popular before I got on this board.

If you look at support groups members, Miranda have the second biggest fan base.

And I don't think popularity of characters on forum is representative of their true popularity.

Well, Tali has what every player is ESSENTIALLY looking for. Besides the bird legs and hands...
Nice voice, pretty funny, nice body, the mysteriousness of the helmet thing... it's charming. And she's a pretty badass girl. Nuff said.
Miranda has the looks, definitely. I think the designers got a little happy with designing how she looked. Designed to be the perfect woman. But that's just it for me. I hate how this sounds when I say it, but she has fake features in a game that just seem like a bad thing. Plus, she really shows how much she dislikes you at some points.
Ashley has a lot of criticism, idk why. I like her. She was my love interest in ME1. Ashley is a soldier. She follows orders and can be in control when needed, but she knows her limitations and what she can do. And she goes to exceed it. I think she's a very good rolemodel.
Jack scares me. The paragon sex thing makes me wanna vomit. I guess I can see why some people would want to get into that (That's what she said) because I guess if you're that person who likes to be there for people going through the hardest times at life, there's no better person really.
Samara you get so close to before she pushes you away. She can be charming and I'd see why someone could want to be with her. I mean, she kicks ass, she's blue, she would do anything to preserve her beliefs (Including kill her daughter...), she's blue, commit her life to an ancient Asari code, and SHE'S BLUE!!! C'MON!!!!!
Morinth... she kills you. That kinda bums me out. She's like a ****block but for Mass Effect 2. Sure she's blue and likes sex, but she wears a black uniform. That I sort of dislike. I mean, yeah, it looks like it's a tight outfit, but it's also not revealing the slightest bit. Kind of out of her character for trying to be a killer who murders with sex...

Now for the males...
Kaiden bores me. He's flat. I loved his character Carth Onasi in Knights of the Old Republic but he doesn't attach to me as a character in any way during ME1. I've let him die always, but still felt a bit of guilt.
Garrus is awesome. He's funny and so socially awkward that it makes him that much more loveable. And the fact that he can survive so much is just awe-inspiring. Garrus is definitely for those who favor muscle.
Thane is pretty cool, too. I sent my femshep to him. He may sound a bit emo, but hey, scaley alien-human babies! No, but seriously, Thane can be inspirational. He is calm in times needed, but a real father figure during his loyalty mission. He knows what he has to do and he wants to make sure he makes anything he screwed up better. If you like that guy who knows what he's doing, Thane's for you!
Jacob... well.... Jacob...... blah. I don't like Jacob. He whines too much and he's as flat as I thought Kaiden was. Jacob has no interesting dialogue at all, he's not funny, and he's just plain boring! I mean, I guess you could say you may want to go with him because he's human and scaley alien-human babies sound nasty (but funny). I just don't like him... he's pretty dull.

And finally, the neutral romances.
Doctor Chakwas (Sorta-Kinda) - Like... you can get her drunk. Nothing else really happens (which is good lol) but I guess if you like the silent type who like to occasionally get drunk and make remember friends really awkward, there's no one better!
Kelly is pretty cool. Besides alerting you when something's up on your ship, she's a pretty cool person to talk to. She even offers to feed your fish! ^_^ And if you never pursue'd a romance or broke up with the love interest after the suicide mission, Kelly will send you a message (If she survives the suicide mission. Damn you all who LET her die!) telling you to meet her up in your cabin. What I like about calling Kelly up is that she dances, which none of your party members EVER do! Good goin, Kelly! Stripper-Messenger FTW!
*EDIT* Forgot Liara! :P
Liara is a very scientificy but clumsy sort-of character. She isn't really good at social occasions but she eventually becomes open and understandable. I, myself, do not think she's all that great only because she seems too smart but hey, scaley alien-human babies!

I didn't think Jacob would be quite so unpopular as he is. My first play through was Male Shepard and I guess I didn't get to the point of bro-hug. So, he just seemed normal. In fact, the most normal squadie (him and Tali). Everyone else seemed to so laden with baggage.

Also I remembered talking to oppisite gendered people in ME1 was a good way to get strangled by the red string (faithful Shepard) so I steered clear of most of the crew. Garrus and his obsessive calibrations foiled me, only chatty people were Jacob and Mordin.

And Mordin thought I was hitting on him.

She is a female character and had a big part of both games.

Most people feel more attached and like characters more; the more they get to know them.

I have to say I am surprised there isn't more threads about Joker though, I find him really interesting... and really hope there is a Joker-mission in ME3

For the most part, characters are received in the community the way I received them in game.  How very common of me.

The only one that was a surprise was Thane.  I'd heard he was Estrogen Brigade Bait and was ready to jump on board, but I just abhor him in game.  Voice is very important to me, and I hate his.  The vibration... cringe-worthy.  Plus... he's a fish.  Fish belong in the tank, seen but not heard.  And only seen if they're pretty.  I'm hoping that if I fly around long enough in the Normandy, he'll eventually die.  I refuse to kill him in game out of spite, so it's going to have to be natural causes.

I guess I was a bit surprised that the Krogans don't have more of a following.  I love both Wrex and Grunt (Wrex Jr.).  I take Grunt with me all the time on my sniping char.  He's so happily violent, like a good (sort of) Simon Phoenix.  I loved seeing the Asari and Krogan together and meeting the Asari with a Krogan "father".  Krogans need love, too.

Also, Mordin is awesome.  I won't even interrupt him for Paragon points.

EDIT:  Agree with the above post.  Joker is great and I would expect a larger fan base.  Maybe it's because the LIs get the most discussion and loving Joker would break his poor body.  Let's hear it for medical advances so Joker can have love, too!  Although we all know he's developed a codependent relationship with EDI.

I like Miranda (Romanced her ona playthrough and generally like her and her loyalty mission story) but you have a point here. Every time she runs ahead of my Vanguard in her high heel boots I facepalm.

I was really surprised by how much Ashley hate there was. She was my favorite character, and when I came here, I saw threads calling her a "racist b!tch". I was really surprised.
