Chapter 2: Unwelcome guests
Aldwin greets me with a hug that would put a bear to shame, he is dressed in a travellers atire and his leather armour and tattered cloak add a hardiness to his appearance. We go inside, its beggining to rain and id rather chat by the fire then in a rainstorm.
Outside i can hear the rain pitter pating on the oak roof of my cabin, the fire wards the chill from my old bones and we sit with ale from the celler the conversation turning to familiar territory.
"The vigil stands tall as ever, the new commander is a bit of a fool but then most of them seemed so commanding in the shadow of Queen Fiona" he says with typical enthusiasm " you seem well boy" i say pouring him another mug of ale "Nothing like a career in the wardens to keep me fit da" he replies taking a swig from his cup, he is silent for a moment and i know the conversation will soon turn to less pleasant and far less distant topics.
He stares at me with his green eyes, deidre always said they looked like wolves eyes and his time as a ranger has only added to his wild appearance " why do you still live up here da, its no place to live, why not come back to amaranthine to see Kendrick and wilma?" he asks knowing full well why i stay up here " i can't son, not now....they remind me of your mother too much to see them all at once" i reply feeling sorrow creep through my soul, he sighes and stares into his cup. He opens his mouth to say something but a sudden scream from outside kills any conversation in an instant.
The door slides open with a creak and a cloaked stranger stumbles in, the wind howls across the country outside and rain and lightning fill the sky like the makers wrath. The stranger collapses as aldwin runs forward, gathering the stranger in his arms he pulls back the rain soaked hood to reveal a woman. She stares up " They are coming, hide me...." she moans weakly as aldwin stares into her icy grey eyes.
Aldwin looks to me as if asking for guidance as i move toward the door and stare out into the rain, i look outside to see two dark figures rushing up the hill towards the cabin. I turn to aldwin "wait here with her, i need to get something from the cellar" i say walking towards the stairs, aldwin doesnt need any further instructions, he knows to keep the strangers at bay until we decide what to do with them.
The old cellar stinks of rotting barrels and cheap ale, its here i keep things i would rather not see and as i come to the old chest a sudden feeling of dread fills me. its been so many years since i saw the contents of this locked chest and now fate forces me to see them again.
I unlock the chest with a key i keep in my belt at all times, the hinges open with a nasty creak and reveal the tools of my old life. My twin handaxes shine brightly even after so long in the chest, they have felled darkspawn at ostagar and denerim and loghain's men during the civil war and still after all that they shine.Next to the handaxes is my old armour, leather with reinforced viridium plates and a black mabari emblazoned on the chest. The mabari is my warhound shadowrend who left this world at my hands when his taint became an agony.
I take the armour from the chest and buckle it to my aged frame quickly, once it fit like a glove but now it hangs off my skinny chest as if it was made for a man twice my size. I have no time to ponder the ravages of age and i grab the axes and run upstairs to stand with my son.
The two strangers are close now and they stride towards the doorway with menacing purpose "hail freinds my thanks for giving our charge sanctuary, but she needs to come with us now" one of the cloaked figures says pulling back his hood to reveal a dark haired man with a malicious smile.
"why do you want the girl" my son asks suspicious " we are merely returning her to her father, a family matter that is none of your concern" the grinning stranger replies, the grip on my axes tightens and i know a dangerous situation when i see it.
The stranger looks agitated and frowns slightly " as i said, we are returning her to her father, now please return her to us" he says his tone suddenly more harsh " why did she run from you" i ask " That is none of your concern... now hand her over" he says in a commanding voice, i step forward to bar his path " i don't like your tone, no one is taking her until i have answers" i say both axes ready to strike.
My challenge prompts the stranger to glare at me agressively, he throws his hands up and chants something in a harsh language that makes the air heat and boil with arcane sorcery. The chant fills our ears and sends us crashing into the wall of the cabin.
I black out for a moment, i struggle back from unconsciousness with a grunt and stare up to see the fleeing girl chanting something in an equally fierce voice. Flames fill her hands and flow from her towards our attacker with a fierce hiss, the sorcerer is burned alive instantly and his screams are drowned by the sea of fire that engulfs him.
The second cloaked figure pulls out a large maul and walks toward the now exhausted girl, he punches her with a thuggish blow that knocks her out cold. I waste no time and rise to my feet with a groan, i charge the large thug with a roar and bring an axe down on his leg. He growls and swings his maul at me, the pain makes him clumsy and he misses as i bury my second axe in his shoulder with a sickening crack.
He pushes me to the ground and raises his maul, my axes still buried in his leg and shoulder. He raises the maul with a bellow ready to crush me, then he collapses forward a blade from my son's pack lodged in his head.
Aldwin walks up to me and helps me up we stare at the slain assailants with dark looks " Those men, they would have killed us to get the girl, who could want a daughter that badly?" aldwin asks staring at the girl who now lies unconscious by the dead thug " i don't know son" i reply staring at the burning corpse outside " but our new guest has a lot of explaining to do" i say gruffly, i stare at the strange lass and suddenly realize those men's accents were familiar.
