Ok I recently bought the Morrowind Game of the Year Edition. I installed it fine and it when I double click on the icon on my desktop, it goes to the initial screen fine. However, when I click on play, it crashes. I get a black program box with Morrowind as the title and then it goes grey and a Windows error saying that Morrowind has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. What do I do to fix this?
I'm currently running Windows Vista 32 bit, 4 gigs of ram, and nvidia 8600GT. Let me know if any other specs are needed.

I'd try searching around various Morrowind fan forums to see if anyone else is having similar issues.

Did you try checking out the official Morrowind hardware and software issues forum on Bethesda's website?

Could it be a hardware problem? Something that needs updating perhaps? The game or maybe the graphics card?

I've checked the sites, but none of the problems that have been addressed have been the same as mine.

I wish I could be more helpful, but I've never had Morrowind "ZOMGWTF" crash on me.

Vista, eh?
Morrowind is touchy with vista.
Update your graphics card (I know it sounds silly for an old game but it is a vista issue), patch the game fully before you run it, make sure you are running as an administrator. If you still have issues try compatibility mode.

Can't seem to get it to work. Any other suggestions before I throw in the towel?

after you did an uninstall, did you go back and manually delete any files left behind? If not then do so as I found that causes problems not only with morrowind but oblivion as well.

Yeah, I went through and deleted all the files after uninstalling. I may get my cousin to come over and tinker with this; he's better with computers than I am.

If you upgraded to vista from XP there may still be old filed from your XP os on your drive. Do a search and see if you can locate any Bethseda, or Morrowind files and delete them. Be sure to go inot the properties of your desktop launch icon and make sure you have it set to run as Administrator for all users, and when you launch the game run as Administrator. Also if make sure you have all the latests updates and patches for your Morrowind game. Stay away from the un-official patches since they have shown to cause problems for people on Vista.
If running the game as administrator does not work try going into the properities again, and try running it in Comapatability mode for XP. If all that does not work try doing some Google searching on the subject. I have a link here also for you.

My computer came with Vista, I didn't upgrade from XP. Odds are, I'll be able to play it on my laptop, I just haven't bothered to install it on there yet. Hopefully that's the case, as it is with Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne. I can't play it on my desktop but I can on my laptop.

Morrowind was always a touchy game, update your drivers, and try a clean reinstallation
