In DA:O, I barely tolerated him. In DA:A, I downright hate him, and not only because he turns out to be such an ass. The worst thing is that he's so predictable. Like in the Joining ritual in Awakening, you could see his reaction coming miles away.

Oghren rules.
Why yes, you've captioned me perfectly! Although you forgot to mention that I polish my cherry-coloured manicured nails while doing so, and that I go and shut myself in the cellar if I want to have a good laugh.

But would be interested to see the demographic of age/sex as to who likes him and doesnt....
I would be prepared to bet a lot of money that the majority of Oghren lovers are boys/men in the15-21 age range.....or women who have not yet realised that lame crude jokes about them really are just not funny and are just plain sexist.
Because, seriously, anyone else would just be turned off by him, I had friends like him when I was at school 30 years ago, I've grew out of that juvenile humour a long time ago.

I mean, my reaction to him has always been "he's a frat boy" and so how unshocked am I to find out that to talk to him in Awakening, I've got to tap his keg and listen to him ramble on drunkenly.

I'd have to get spoilery--although I notice people aren't letting that hold them back.Let's see.... In
Origins, he had a somewhat raunchy sense of humor--that was funny, rough edges, and a good heart. In Awakening, he was really crude without being funny, caustic in a way he hadn't been before, and it was hard to
believe that the guy who would look for Branka for years was also a guy who would abandon the responsibilities he abandoned to come to Amaranthine. That's especially true when you consider what a very short time this is from the end of Origins, certainly less than a year. He didn't try to deal with those responsibilities for very long.
You hit the nail on it. I liked that(at least in my 'good' playthrough) Oghren, after all he'd been through, was finally able to move on past Branka, settle down and end his self-destructive ways. He remarried(and it seemed a happy marriage), became a general and regained the family life and the respect as a warrior that he had lost. He had a happy ending.
But here I find that everything I did to improve Oghren's lot was a waste because for some idiotic reason he left it behind all on his own and went back to being a wandering drunkard. His character could have been handled far better. If you're reading this, Mr. Gaider, if you wanted an excuse to have Oghren joing the party why couldn't you have General Oghren sent to Vigil's Keep to assist the Wardens instead? You could then have had him as a companion without degrading his character like you did.

Oghren in Origins was great. His whole story was moving and believable. From quizzing the guard he argued with, to him being less than polite in the tavern, to him insulting the Warden for 'buttering up' purposes, all was well done as starting lines of a possibly great friendship. Later he suffers through the whole Branka mess, and leaves the only home he ever knew to help the Warden.
All of it hung seamlessly together, and had little to no "what the....???" moments. Through the fade and the gauntlet, we see him grow a bit, and see the beginnings of trust between the Warden and Oghren.
Yes, there were burp/fart/alcohol/cheap pick-up lines, but they were well interspersed with genuine emotions and sadness on Oghren's part. The loop ended with a warm and caring friendship between the Warden and Oghren, and his speech to her at the gates was moving. She and Oghren ended Origins with a 100 friendship and it felt like it playing the game.
Awakening is a disaster as far as Oghren is concerned. He abandons not only his wife, but his child as well. This is totally out of sinc with his gauntlet speech to the guardian. The friendship to the Warden is lost. Utterly. Without a reason given. Did they have a major, major fall-out between Origins and Awakening? What gives? Zero approval/friendship? Really?
The Joining was ridiculous. It was very lackluster to begin with and was further cheapened by Oghren's behavior. Poor Mhairi. What a terrible way to go - in the wake of a bad, bad comedy act. Oghren gets worse and worse, he is never happy unless he can shoot off some cheap jokes. The terrible communication system makes it all but impossible for the Warden to speak to Oghren properly, perhaps to find out why he behaves like he does.
There are some moments in the game where the player can glimpse the 'tragic anti-here' that Oghren has become. However, it is not well written and poorly implemented. Summing up:
Oghren in Origins = great development
Oghren in Awakening = What the....????
Maybe someone kidnapped the real (Origins) Oghren and left us with a poor impostor (Awakening). Are those cultists at it again?

I gotta disagree with that one...
Dirty, crude, and offensive humor is extremely popular. Look no further the family guy and south park among many others.
Dirty, crude, and offensive humor has and will be hated and despied by many as well.
Family guy has legions of fans and legions of haters. In all age groups. It's a very love/hate kinda thing. Much like...

Oghren!
I Will FULLY agree, that although I'm 24, Oghren is almost certainly more popular amonst the younger generation (like you said 15-21) then say the older 25+ gamer group. I'm also certain he's FAR more popular with guys then girls. But, one need look no further then the extreme popularity of movies like Hangover and TV shows like family guy to know that your absolute at the end of your post is false. Hangover was two hours of dirty sex jokes, barfing, and offensive laughs... and yet everyone I know loves the hell out of it, whether their 15 or 50.
(PS- South Park may not be the fairest thing to compare him to, as south park can be as smart and intelligent as crude and offensive)

Seconded. But still, to each his own, I guess. Would be pretty dull if we all had the same sense of humour, after all.

Awakenings Oghren tho... Instead of progressing him just went backwards, turning him into a lewd abusive dwarf, now I wouldnt mind this if the real Oghren shined through still, but he never does, just mentions his family and gets an epilogue slide.

Could turn that on its head and say, the real Oghren did shine through, maybe the other one was just full of ****?
Depends how you look at it doesnt it
To clarify that for you, the last 5 years of my life have been the worst I've had, but I've not turned to drink etc etc.....if your that type of person, you will eventually go down that road regardless of circumstance.
The circumstance then just becomes the excuse...

Well all I know is my crazy bush (no not that kinda bush... I mean George Bush) loving aunt, my highly successfull rich uncle (that worked on the likes of Star Wars), my architect dad, my hippy liberal mom, and each and every one of my friends (mostley college grads) loved the hell out of hangover.
So yes, I truly beleave it is all down to taste.
BUT calling this type of humor childish (a kind of humor that appeals to all ages, save ironically children... who wouldn't get the jokes) is kinda insulting And it does make you sound highbrow. And the term highbrow is an insult as the definition is literally a snob.
Diffrent strokes for diffrent folks my amigo.

That cant really be argued, as films like those are aimed at a certain demographic are they not? Not arguing with you, thats just the way it is....not saying older people do not like them at all....sure they do.
Snob, highbrow...semantics Wishpig...

Well considering their both videogame characters and not people... and considering ones a blue bi-sexual alien. I really don't think I would benefit much from rethinking an avatar picture.

I dislike Oghren (in awakening atleast) mainly because of his "dirty, crude and offensive humor", I hate that type of behaviour in people IRL as well. Good thing I've outgrown the age where that type of behaviour is most prevalent.
I love both Family guy and South Park however. Don't compare Oghren to Family Guy, its just plain insulting to Family Guy (and Seth McFarlane who is a genius). American Dad>Family Guy though.
