I dislike Oghren (in awakening atleast) mainly because of his "dirty, crude and offensive humor", I hate that type of behaviour in people IRL as well. Good thing I've outgrown the age where that type of behaviour is most prevalent.

I love both Family guy and South Park however. Don't compare Oghren to Family Guy, its just plain insulting to Family Guy (and Seth McFarlane who is a genius). American Dad>Family Guy though.;)

I agree. Seth Mcfarlane and Trey Parker are Satirists.

Oghren was a great character in Origins but was ruined in Awakenings.

You find a picture of two people who love each other creepy... I think you might benefit from thinking about that some more.

Well considering their both videogame characters and not people... and considering ones a blue bi-sexual alien. I really don't think I would benefit much from rethinking an avatar picture.

Maybe we are all videogame characters, and I am fine with your choice to not agree with me. ;)

If I was stoned outta my mind, you would have exploded my head with that comment. Yes... exploded.

Trey and Matt (south park creators) strongly dislike family guy, seeing it as stupid and uncreative humor.

Personally I love family guy and south park, I'll also admit American Dad has REALLY grown on me (Roger makes the show though). But I lost all respect for Seth when he made the clevland show. Like a poor general, he's spread his comedy too far.

But I like Oggy nonetheless.

This.

But taking the happy, hard-drinking dwarf and making him the game's most tragic character was a nice twist I must say.

I agree. Oghren felt pretty real to me in Awakening. I already liked him in Origins, but the tragedy of his life in the expansion - where is basically a failure at everything, his life, his family, his health - was heart-wrenching and I had to work out his approval to get him the best possible ending, because, deep down inside him, he deserves to be happy after everything that happened in his life, even if his response was drowning himself in alcohol.

I have to agree. I started to like Oghren better in Awakening, because the emptiness of his life becomes much more obvious.

I also find it a bit strange to use "real life morals" judging Oghren. Thedas is a pretty terrible, violent place to live in right now. The Warden and her companions have to fight unimaginable evil and consequently they all, each and every one of them, are pretty broken characters. In the end, my warden accepts Oghren for what he is. Privately he is a mess, but he will fight for and defend his comrades to his last drop of blood. That is no small thing, I would say.

Oh yes, and he is the only one left standing after the joining. Personally, I thought, that was hillarious, but then, my humour is obviously very lowbrow...

Many people dislike him because he is drunk, perverted and rude but to say that you gave him the best possible ending in Origins and hate him in Awakening is totally preposterous. People in real life can not give up alcohol or smoking that easily, it takes time and they need support from friends and family constantly to help themselves to pick up the pieces of their lives and come back to what they used to be.

Oghren is in the first stage of this process and Awakening just shows how much the state he is really in. Let's face it he has lost everything; his wife, his house, his honour. He was made a laughing stock of Orzammar and took up drinking as a result. He still feels that way and in real life it is hard to force someone to be happy, instead you help him (which is what I did). I feel he is going to be one of those long term characters and you have a choice to help him to recover what he has lost or don't help him at all(you {by 'you' I mean all those who feel they must have every single character in the game} do realise that you have a choice and he is possible companion not a forced one).

He's pretty much forced on you though unless your PC is a warrior. Of course awakening is easy enough to complete without a warrior (especially on lower difficulties) but combat is alot more structured with a tank.

Pity people can bodge polls etc...

But would be interested to see the demographic of age/sex as to who likes him and doesnt....

I would be prepared to bet a lot of money that the majority of Oghren lovers are boys/men in the15-21 age range.....or women who have not yet realised that lame crude jokes about them really are just not funny and are just plain sexist.

Because, seriously, anyone else would just be turned off by him, I had friends like him when I was at school 30 years ago, I've grew out of that juvenile humour a long time ago.

I'd be interested to know the demographic of countries too. People here are mentioning American TV comedy shows yet there is a huge difference in comedy across countries. British humour is very different to American humour, for example.

Until Oghren, I hadn't heard any real-life person over the age of 12 making his kind of so-called jokes.

I actually disliked him in Origins, not hated him though, hate is such a strong, strong word.

But in Awakening... I actually LIKE him! His jokes are good now and I love the party banter he gets with Sigrun and Anders:) He is also a quite good fighter:)

In Origins if I needed a 2h warrior, I would take Sten over Oghren any time... but if the DAA Oghren was in DAO, I would take him over Sten for sure.

I'll admit I had a shallow dislike of Oghren in Orgins. I just didn't like him and I really didn't have much reason for it as I normally only had him in my party during the deep roads. That all changed after I played Awakenings. I had him in my party a great deal more and came to really get to know him. Thanks to Awakenings I have valid reasons to dislike that poor excuse for a dwarf now. Thank you Awakenings I have a valid strong hatred for Oghren and not a shallow petty one.

 Very neatly put.

Personally, I don't hate Oghren - I just find him fairly boring, which makes me feel guilty, since a lot of people do clearly like him for understandable reasons. Perhaps he doesn't work for me because he sits on this uncomfortable fault line between being a fun caricature ( e.g. an Edwin/an HK47) and an actual character.

the writers tries to make him funny, but most jokes just fell flat on me, and same with anders. it just makes them two dimensional, I just remember them as the "funny guy". and what's up with oghren hitting on every female companion in your party and make sex jokes in most of the party conversation? this is a dark fantasy, not freaking family guy.

I don't really think that is what the writer really intended. Look at Alistair, Morrigan (don't ask why because you know what I am speaking of), and Zevran who are all funny in their own way. Oghren is a try hard and his humor is an example of his overall situation. He wants to respected as a warrior but he pushes people away and uses lame joke and alcohol to pull people closer as result. Before Branka left, he was respected but fell apart after his entire house left him behind.

Oghren is . . . Oghren.

He doesn't try to "axe" me like a good deal of the people I meet so yes, I like him just fine.

I like that Awakening has created more depth for him. I am shocked that they did not include any cutscenes of the wardens in a drinking contest though.

I can certainly see how he could easily annoy

That said, I liked him in DA:O and still found him amusing in Awakenings.Cracked me up when he complained about the serving size he'd been given for the Joining.

I'm really disappointed in Oghren. I loved him in Origins and was thrilled I had him in Awakenings.... until I realized what a sleezeball he is. I didn't mind his raunchy behavior in Origins but he's a married man with a kid now and I'm disappointed in him not living up to his responsibilities and also how he hits on every woman around. I was proud of him in Origins at the end when he cleaned himself up and settled down with Felsi. Oh well.

speaking of the Joinging, anyone else felt like being kicked in the groin?
Oghren makes a joke, drinks, burps
Anders makes a joke, drinks, passes out
Mhairi acts all serious, drinks, DIES. lol

kids, listen to uncle joker, never be serious, that's the only thing that can keep you alive.

Oghren fell flat as the broken anti-hero. This is an RPG. There should be an explanation why the 100+ friendship with the warden is suddenly wiped out. His moving speech at the gates is in total contradiction with that.

His speech at the gauntlet is in total contradiction to his actions as well. There should be some explanation, but I guess that's too much to ask for a proper RPG nowadays. There is just no way that my warden would be so oblivious that her good friend Oghren is in such emotional and psychological turmoil. Hence, it was a good idea that fell utterly flat.

I never liked Oghren, he's probably the most annoying character in the game. If there had been a way to kill him directly, I would have done it.

I don't agree with Oggy being pretty much forced.  With the new combinations of skills, talents, specs and ridiculously awesome magic loot you can make almost anyone a form of tank.  I'm running with Sigrun as a backstabbing, wolf-summoning shadow ranger on nightmare and beating the stuffing out of the game right now.  Maybe it gets harder at the end (and I am a ridiculously powerful spirit-healing/blood mage, so that does make it easier), but the only problem I have is when the enemies get so frustrated with not being able to hit Sigrun that they take it out on Nathaniel.

Oggy is Oggy, he is meant to love and hate and sometimes laugh.  Another character may have been better, but for dramatic effect they are saving them for DAO2.  Thats the real reason he is here...because in the overall story, he is expendable!
