This is mostly to Bioware.
.
I do not wish to stir anything up. Nor do I wish for it to ignite any flaming.

One of my very few complaints with Mass Effect 2, was the uneven romance options for male and female characters. While the male character gets a choice between three females, and two of them human. They also get better romance scenes.

Having said that. I came to a final conclusion. I am sad that it seems that the Bioware writers created the female romance options, not for female players. It is geared for the male players, playing female characters. All for kicks and giggles. Between the comments that Solis makes, and the scenes themselves. This could not have possibly been intended for the female player.

The male Shepard not only gets much better options, the romance itself is much more deep. "not that any of them are really all that deep" but the comparable is very unbalanced. The scenes are more steamy and sexy for the male character.

The female Shepard? Garrus, Thane, and Jacob.

First let me say, Garrus is a cool buddy. but a romance option? Maybe if my character was addicted to red sand and Garrus had her next fix. The romance scenes are sooo incredibly lame as well. Some cheesy dialog from Garrus with heads touching, then a fade screen?

Thane. A cool persona, but c'mon.. looks like the creature from the black lagoon and dieing.. All to get some drama about dieing, kiss, then fade screen.

I have no clue about Jacob as he is so boring, I would never bother.

Bioware. You have more female players than I think you realize. We are typically less vocal in the community.. Well. aside from players like me. We keep hearing about game companies wanting to tap into the female demographic?  We are already here. But joke romances like this, that clearly display an unfair balance, are not the way to go..

I still loved the game none the less. Though. I think all my runs will be with Kaidian and or Ashley (faithful), as they did not seem to be a total mockery for the female player choices.

Regards

Female gamer...   :wizard:

Whilst your post is very good, was it really needed, given how many other threads there are regarding this problem?

And as a male gamer, I actually do agree with you btw :)

Sorta reminds me of Jade Empire .. Sky also got a huh, really? reaction.

Maybe you should check out the jacob love scene. I've seen it on youtube and I don't really think it was designed with men playing women in mind.

Overall though I agree with you.

Jacob romance is the worst of the bunch. Avoid it like the plague.

Watch the youtube video for the lolz if you want, but that's all I'd recommend.

I feel this is a bit ridiculous.  If BW was creating FemShep romance options for male players playing females they would have provided female/female options.  They did not, so it appears to me they are creating FemShep love interests with female players in mind.

I liked Garrus's romance.

And I think the point of 'knock heads and fade to black' is just further implying that they did not in fact, jump each others bones, but talked it out.

Truth be told, I don't think Jacob "The Priiiize" Taylor was designed for any demographic.

Funny, that's how I reacted when I found out Zu wasn't romanceable... at least Sky wasn't as over-the-top as his personality clone, Zevran.

I personally find Jacob far to vanilla and boring..   He calls the fem a prize? :pinched:  Oh brother. once again. geared for the male player, playing females...

Sorry Liso if it came out bad...wasnt my intention...

Jacobs...well....muts have been wrotten by one of the 15 year old trainee's at Bioware...

Thanes is the best....but again....just not right....even for me playing a female character...a woman must get seriously creeped out by it....

and Garrus...was fangirl'ism that got that romance....mothing more....

So again, completely agree with your post....

Yes, because there are no such a thing as a gay gamer?  Regardless. that is not what i meant in the least. I am talking about the structure of the romance. Not having the option of lesbian sex. Which they did give you in ME1. maybe they were worried about redundancy. who knows.

I don't think that's a very logical conclusion. Jacob calling women 'the priiize' is hardly something that would appeal to a male, bar the average frat boy who probably wouldn't be playing ME in the first place but rather Call of Duty: RAMIREZ KNIFE THAT CHOPPER Warfare 2.
And how would the lack of a lesbian relationship correlate to BioWare trying to appeal to males? You do realize that most males were hung up on the whole 'HOMFG ALIEN LESBIAN SEX DO WANT' and a lot of people ended up complaining when this didn't happen. The option for a lesbian romance was more or less huge fan-service for the male demographic.

I think a basic issue with the female romances (Garrus and Thane in particular) is that they're non-human and unattractive. The quarians don't have faces (that the player sees) so it's easy to suppose that they're attractive based on their body plan. The asari look like humans with wigs.

Unless you have an amphibian fetish, Thane is IMO definetly not really rocking those features that humans ought to find attractive. The irony is that apparently he was designed to look like a romance interest from the start, which only makes me wonder what the kind of mind-bending drugs the arists were at the time. Garrus, though, he's just there by popular demand. His species was definetly not designed to ever be romanceable.

Give Jacob credit - his personality aside, you could at least imagine meeting him somewhere and not thinking he was going to eat your face.

With the search function being what it is I wouldnt be surpriced if you wouldnt have found any anyway :/ (unless they fixed it while i was away)

And while i can remember threads that have brought this up - as part of a bigger picture - this thread is here now and its a single issue one so i felt i should respond to this single issue.

From what i have seen there are those who like both Garrus and Thane. You have stated your personal reasons why you, yourself dont but that dosnt detract the experiance from those that do. I personaly didnt like either romance option opened to me as a male player in ME1 for instance. That being said I do agree with you. I can imagine different reasons why this can be the case - none of them good reaons though. We will just have to hope this issue will be addressed - in ME3

Also IIRC there are some social groups that has formed around this issue but cant point you in their direction atm as i dont remember their names. Sorry :/

Zev is for whoever has the power.. I think that is what mattered to him. He is not picky.  lol   I liked good ole Zevran, just do not take the character to seriously.

Sky's part of an M/M romance arc too, if memory serves.

On the case of Jacobs romance. I seriously doubt anyone, male or female seriously find that a good romance. So whoever they where gearing that romance towards... I just cant think of who they could have aimed that towards -shruggs-

I am a female gamer playing a female Shep and I got exactly what I wanted romance-wise. Thane is gorgeous and Garrus is who I wanted in ME1 instead of being stuck with a dull human (plenty of humans in real life and I'm already in love with the best human guy IRL, so no need to bother with them... except Alistair <3) and a repulsive female lesbiansexxorz fanservice.

So far, Bioware is on the right track with me!
