Tali never used to have a self-esteem problem.  SHe had a mind of her own, was completely badass, feisty and very interesting.  In ME2 she is all about Alpha!Shepard.  Gross.

I always thought Tali was there to educate me on Quarian exile

EDIT:  I should clarify.  My personal opinion of the characterization of Tali/Garrus in ME 1 is that there really wasnt any.  Same for Wrex except Wrex seems to have more dialogue on missions.  So I can't really see that Tali was a badass as I don't see much concrete made in that character in ME 1, it just seems imposed, and I would have still thought that but after playing ME 1 again I realized that Nostalgia had a hold on me.

As much as Joker is. She's got a smaller following than him, but she's got that older British woman, Helen Mirren sort of appeal. A lot of people would be interested in a romance.

Unless you have an amphibian fetish, Thane is IMO definetly not really rocking those features that humans ought to find attractive. The irony is that apparently he was designed to look like a romance interest from the start, which only makes me wonder what the kind of mind-bending drugs the arists were at the time. Garrus, though, he's just there by popular demand. His species was definetly not designed to ever be romanceable.

Give Jacob credit - his personality aside, you could at least imagine meeting him somewhere and not thinking he was going to eat your face.
