I think the problem with the ME2 romances, male and female, is not so much who was available to romance, it's that instead of two well-written, well-developed romances as in ME 1, we had six poorly-written, poorly-developed romances in ME 2.

Yes, Thane is utterly creepy. I'm not going there, much as I like the guy. Garrus is my buddy, maybe even my best friend right now. That has an... incestuous feel to it. Nope. Uh-uh.

So that leaves Jacob. Cute enough. Alrighty then. However, FemShep has to flirt him up right away for the romance option to become available. And how does she do it? By leaning back, sticking out her pelvis, and changing her voice to sound like a $20 hooker. I mean, good lord! She was acting like a total ... tart (although the "s" word is more appropriate). There was no respect garnered between them, no subtle, growing attraction... just "oooh, nice body, Jake. Me want."

I really loved the Kaidan romance. It was incredibly well-crafted, regardless of whether Kaidan as a character was appealing to individual players or not. He was sure as hell appealing to me.

I won't be pursuing any of the romances in ME 2 replays, because they aren't worth pursuing. Give me one solid, well-crafted romance, not 6 rushed, tacky, mediocre ones.

That said, the clips of the Garrus romance finale were indeed sweet, rather than creepy or just plain jerk-mode. Priiiize, indeed. Meh.

Oh, crap. Zenn...Onyx... they're talking about Mass Effect, not real life. Gosh, I feel really awkward now...

Wait, but I thought Mass Effect was life?  Wait... no... NO

I consider Tali to be the greatest character ever made. As such, there is definitely a relationship with emotion there.
She is my "friend", and I defend them.

Ah, so apparently I'm a zoopihile? lol

Thane isn't fish. His illness is due to his species being unable to live on a humid world. Kinda the opposite of fish ;p

I would consider interspecies relationships in the ME Universe equivalent to inter-ethnic relationships in real life.

But yes, I agree with you about the romances. Why are aliens dating each other again? I guess it's one thing when the aliens are of the Star-Trek variety--humans with extra bits--but it seems like most species would view such relationships as akin to bestiality (ignoring questions about physiology). This alone would have kept me away from inter-species romance, but throw in the fact that, female or not, I'd rather play a gay character, and my options wound up being VERY limited. I wound up romancing Kelly, which wasn't too bad, but it reeked of sexual harassment, objectification, and simple shallowness. I can call my secretary up to my quarters and have her give me a lapdance? Really, Bioware? In 2010?

Here's hoping for more--or better developed--options the next time through.

Yeah - I did think of the beastiality thing on a playthrough, but I think the key difference is that in what we would traditionally regard as 'beastiality', there is no personality or self-aware identity to become attracted to (at least, not in what we commonly know about animals. lol). It is purely a physical thing. Garrus remarks that he doesn't 'have a fetish for humans', but falls for Shepard, and I think that this is the key distinction.

But, even though Shep is a character we can project our own intentions on to, rather than one we create from scratch, a player still has the option of playing a Shep with, for example, a 'Turien fetish' (in their own interpratation of Shep), where as they don't have the option of a gay or bisexual romance. It's an odd balance (or at least, seems that way to me).

Inter-species relationships with aliens has NOTHING to do with bestiality. Bestiality and pedophilia is wrong because someone or something of quite lesser mental capacity and understanding is being taken advantage of. There is nothing of that sort with Thane or Garrus, at all. They're both smart people. We do have a bisexual romance, janey, despite PR. No gay romances though, yes.

Agreed.

(although the Kelly 'romance' is not really a proper LI experience, IMO. And there is no male bisexual option, which is just sexist. And Bioware mantain character continutity, even though the fact that maleshep is straight and femshep is bi is just wrong! lol )

Lol, I pretty much agree with the rest of your post.  I think parts of the romances for ME2 were well-written, but lack of content made it seem too easy to get people into bed.  Ok, that sounded creepy, but if you have ever played Dragon Age, I swear, romancing Leliana or Silk Fox from JE was the hardest to do!  You had to play your cards right, and pay attention to lots of things.

ME2 lacked great backstories and character depth . . .  I'll excuse a few from this, but anyway.

ME1 romances win hands-down, imo.

That's not sexist. Sexism against males in general is pretty funny...not inherently more funny than against females, it's funny because throughout history most sexism appears to be have directed towards females. It's not being sexist.

i may get some flaming for saying this, but look to NWN2 or twilight or just about any romance novel, movie, etc. written for women <ducks the inevitable kick to the head> and you'll see what is popular:

2 hot guys that LIKE YOU.

why is tali so popular? she loves shep and always has. THAT is attractive: interested is interesting.

the unbelievable luke-warm response that you get from the guys in ME2 just makes me say guh.... "i don't have some fetish for humans or anything" wow. thanks. again, this is fantasy - and the fantasy is that someone will like you - better yet, more than one person will like you and you get to pick the best of the lot. not throw yourself att them like the PRIIIIIZE.

it's not that the guys aren't cool squadmates, all the characters are well written. just they come off as very boring romance wise if they just don't seem interested in shep without her throwing herself at them like tramps.

okay, go ahead and hate me if you like, but that's my criticism of the writing there.

I would say you could make the argument that it is sexist.  Since when does being sexist mean that it can only be directed at females?

Seriously, does anyone actually think that?  Wow.

Anyway, that would be the big glaring romance missing so far from ME, a m/m romance, but since this is OT again, lol.

I thought it was awesome we could romance Garrus, Thane and Tali.  Just saying.  Variety is awesome to have!

Totally. And this is sort of my issue. But whatever. lol. It doesn't really bother me enough to get worked up about (despite appearences). It's what happens, so you kind of expect it.

Ah, social sexual political norms. You are quite the can of worms, aren't you?

I sincerely disagree. I like the romances in ME2 due to the fact that you had a stake in the character that you were romancing. There is an element of trust which is really important in a relationship, and it makes the romances feel more emotional to me. It's not just "I like you, you like me," there is more emotional than that. Shepard could have easily told the love interest that there is no time to help them out and then the romance does not even happen.  All of what I've said however, unfortunately may not apply to Jacob's romance, I'll give you that.

As for Dragon Age, you can easily just spam gifts and suddenly they love you.

ME1 romances win hands-down, imo.

ME1 romances were better paced but I like the emotional appeal of ME2's romances.

Femshep behaving towards Jacob is a little trampish IMO, but I don't see the rest of your argument.  I sense jealousy in your post.
