You need to play aggressively to get the best out of Revenant.

It is basically an LMG in comparison to the other assault rifles.

Long clip, high damage and penetration, best fired in bursts... I love it.

A thousand times this.  The Revenant has some mid-range utility, but to get the most out of it, you want to be storming the enemy while bellowing incoherently.  Or something B)  In general, ME2 rewards bold-play, and the Revenant is 'Bold Play: The weapon'.  If you aren't chewing up the enemy and spitting them out at close range, you are defense-stripping whole groups of people for an AoE talent-attack of some kind.

Its a versatile weapon, but it took me a long while to get used to using it effectively.  In many ways, it was similar to learning how to use a class, or particular character build, effectively - trying out different tactics, seeing what works and what doesn't.

Revenant is also somewhat effective in medium-long ranges. Trick is to aim to stomach and firing in quick bursts. Revenant has very high recoil pulling the weapon up, sending a deadly volley hitting from waist to head, and shooting in bursts keeps the accuracy stable so almost every bullet hits the target. If you aim directly to head, all you do is waste bullets.

At its best though Revenant is low-medium range where you can deal full-auto death without worrying about ammo. Not sure if it is that usefull on Insane difficulty though, close range is a big no no there.

It's not quite as effective at longer ranges as the Vindicator, obviously, but (possibly with the Assault Rifle Accuracy upgrade, I haven't verified this myself) if you fire short bursts, the reticule will immediately center again, so there's no need to compensate for the pull manually, and at closer ranges, it's an absolute beast. On Insanity, once a Harbinger-controlled Collector's Barrier has been stripped, I can usually take it out in one salvo by just aiming at its stomach and letting 'er rip. Which is not only useful, but also immensely satisfying. I'd say the Revenant doesn't necessarily lend itself to a heavily defensive playstyle, though, so I can see why those types of players would find it useless and prefer the Vindicator.

I got on alright with my Insanity Soldier.  You can still advance aggressively - the cost if things go wrong is just higher.  The game rewards bold play at all difficulty levels (except possibly NG + Insanity with an L30 character, IMO).

When the tactical situation called for me to be the one that took enemies down, my shore-party would distract and antagonise enemy forces, making it easier for me to stay mobile on the field, and lay fire upon my chosen targets.  At other times, I was more there to support my shore-party, stripping defenses from whole units to preparation for a coordinated talent attack (an Area Throw, a Warplosion, etc, etc).

It was actually immensly tactical, and I'm glad to tried an Insanity Soldier that specialised in short-to-mid range combat using the Revenant (though my favoured classes are things like Sentinel and Engineer; I love using active talents).

I personally wasn't amazed by the revenant at first but after using it a while I loved it the huge clip is really nice and it does great close range damage.

I just hate that you can only get it for the soldier. I like the soldier but I prefer the infiltrator and adept.

The revenant would be really nice to have with those classes but I guess it would be overpowered.

But it would still be really cool to have. (:

I don't hate that.  I do hate the fact that weapon specialization locks on NG+, which essentially meant that I had to play a thrid game with my classic Shep to try out the Rev.  Just another way in which NG+ is poorly implemented and generally rubbish.

As regards my original gripe, I have to say, the Rev feels a lot better now that I have fully upgraded assault rifle.  I still don't think it will ever supplant the joy of head-hunting with the Widow.  But whatever, different play styles for different people.

I'm an Infiltrator who took the Revenant, which really makes you the best "Soldier," better than the Soldieir class.

Traded:
1. Adrenaline Rush for Invisibility Cloak
2. Shotgun for Tempest SMG
3. Concussive Shot for Incinerate

The best soldier in the game is the Infiltrator who takes the Revenant. Try it sometime/

Edit: Found out I can't pick the Revenant...LAME!!!!!!!

like all Machine Guns, it's main advantage is the very large ammo clip.

Otherwise this weapon overlaps way too much with shotguns with its limited range. As a soldier my shoty slot is wasted if I pick up revenant.

I've seen a video were DPS wise at close-medium range, Vindicator performs the same (even with reloads) as revenant..

It has it's own playstyle, as is unlike other assault rifles.

but it is really good if you use it correctly

The Revenant absolutely requires the AR Accuracy upgrade to be any good. Luckily you can get that before you get to the Collector ship.

It definitely kills a lot faster than Widow simply because of the huge magazine, but you need to use it correctly.

Activate Adrenaline Rush, aim for the chest (headshots are unreliable with this gun) and hold down the trigger. Simple, easy, fun, rewarding, makes a lot of noise. You can also hold down the trigger even without Adrenaline Rush, you just have to adjust for recoil.

Sadly, however, the Mattock seems a lot better on every count except ammo capacity.

People are disappointed because Revenant is not a pure upgrade to AR like the Widow is to Sniper Rifles.

I'd say it was before the Mattock came along. There was some debate about whether the Vindicator had higher DPS, but in my mind the Revenant is a far better weapon.

Indeed. The Vindicator's shortcomings were such that the Revenant, for all it's lesser accuracy, was still a clear upgrade to it - it's DPS and ammo were more stable and it's ability to do double duty as a shotgun and an AR held it in high regard.

It still maintains some use in the face of the Mattock, primarily thanks to it's absurd clip (allowing you to chew even mighty targets to pieces) but it's accuracy is still a real annoyance.

So.... uh... you were an Infiltrator who took the Revenant... up until the point where you realised that you couldn't have the Rev?

You're going to start up another Widow vs Viper argument with talk like that.

this argument is still a lot more in widow's favor compared to revenant vs. vindicator/mattock

The Revenant is not a all purpose weapon. In long range, even fired in bursts, it's not much effective.

.

However, is close-mid range it's the just perfect. With 80 rounds you can pretty much kill or take out the defenses of any enemy in the game, especially if you combine with AR.

.

Of course, if want to use it like a sniper rifle you will hate it.

I think a lot of Rev annoyance comes from the fact that Assault Rifles are generally expected to be all-purpose weapons. This is true of the full-auto rifles like the Avenger and the Pulse Rifle, and even true for the Mattock thanks to it's huge damage per shot (for an AR).
