Just got Mass Effect 1 off Steam today and have been enjoying it so far but I've come across a serious issue which is preventing me from playing. It seems like when I tab out of the game and tab back in my screen is black for ~15-30 seconds (sound still works fine at the time) even though I have a pretty high end PC. This isn't the big issue though, its something else entirely. Other times when I tab out, I simply cannot tab back in. I'm running Windows 7 and when I click the Mass Effect icon on my taskbar nothing happens, it doesn't even become highlighted (also, ME is still using normal CPU usage). This has happened twice now and I've lost several hours of gameplay both times because I generally don't save too frequently (used to auto-saving). Seriously just did nearly all of the quests in the main city you go to after the first mission and it happened again. ;________;

My PC specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GhZ quad core
6GB Ram
Sapphire ATI HD 5850 - driver version 8.702.0.0 (I
Whatever on-board sound card comes on a Gigabyte MA77OT-UD3P motherboard, updated my drivers roughly a month ago (some sort of Realtek).
DirectX 11

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Felt like it would be worth a mention but I have the Steam overlay disabled.

I believe alt-tab capability is quite strongly a function of the graphics driver version. I have always been able to alt-tab in Mass Effect (though I run NVIDIA systems), however I have a friend who could not alt-tab but then *could* after he upgraded his driver.

The long pause after resuming the game after alt-tab is usual. I can only assume this is cached data being put back into RAM or somesuch.

You can try flipping the graphics mode between window/fullscreen if you really need to get to the desktop for a bit.

The thing is that its inconsistent, its just happening randomly. I don't think its graphics considering my PC doesn't even attempt to tab back in to a blank screen or anything, it just loses the ability to maximize the program back.

edit: No issues whatsoever if I play in windowed mode, only downside is lack of 1600x900.

No, sorry. :/

I can confirm the long delay in ME1 getting itself back up is normal, it works that way for me too. But I'm not sure why it doesn't work some of the time.

Is the official support for ME1 PC version through EA or something?

All right people, this is a very well known symptom that is bound to be well represented by Google finds.  Many games perform exactly the same way and all can be worked past with great ease.  All it takes is to press the ESC key, wait long enough for the menu to load (a matter of hundredths of a second), and rthe you can Alt-Tab freely!
