BIOWARE VS. VALVE
A great match in my opinion (and so very happy that it's not Zynga!). On the one hand, we have Valve, bringing us great FPSs and multiplayers like Half-Life, TF2, CS:S, L4D, and Portal. On the other, we have Bioware, which has brought us great RPGs and single players like SW: KoToR, Baldur's Gate, NWN1, DA:O and of course, Mass Effect.
Personally, I am on the side of Bioware, a developer that has not only created excellent games, but has done more for the image of video games and perhaps gaming as a whole than any other developer I can think of. And it sometimes amazes me how much Bioware cares about its fans and gamers, from reading and incorporating user suggestions from threads on Bioware's forums to including a diverse set of strong characters whether female or male, gay or straight, good or evil (or in between).
When I played the HF games, I was thoroughly impressed and put in a good number of hours, but at the same time I didn't expect anything new--they were still your shoot, kill (albeit great) FPSs. But Bioware seems to be changing and evolving in a way that I, let alone many others, expected. They are revolutionizing cinematic game play. They are utilizing voiced protagonists in an RPG--the only game of its kind to do so (Mass Effect). They have created characters so real and lovable, it verges on scary (*coughTali*). But I must admit, I also feel that Bioware has done the most for the minority of gamers as well, namely female and GLBT gamers, which is a risk in itself on Bioware's behalf. There are but a handful of games with a female protagonist, let alone a GLBT one (if you so choose). And a rare few of those (with a strong female character) who are not hyper-sexualized in some manner (Bloodrayne, Lara Croft, etc). While Portal does this, it's not even close to the respect and character that screams Commander Shepard.
We want great writing for our video games. While there are some shining examples of this, they are rare and often overlooked (Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, etc). As a whole, video games need better writing. They need better stories and voice actors and the same respect as other forms of entertainment. They're not just for kids or 'losers' or 'violent' people. And Bioware seems the way to go in this regard. And I feel it is also important to take into account personal preferences; Bioware is GREAT for single player and Valve is GREAT for multiplayer.
Both developers are epic in their own rights, but I really hope Bioware wins. (And really, this is in a Bioware forum, so I suppose it's as much to bring attention to Bioware as it is to discuss it.)
I'm not one to normally take sides, but in this case...really...vote for Bioware. And use that extra vote via Twitter; apparently less than 2% of voters in the last round(s) used this particular advantage. Imagine if all of those Valve voters had simply done that in the first place (hint: we would not have been all 'oh noes ZYNGA!!11one'). So yes...mmm...vote for Bioware.
Do it for Tali.
