I would have rathered Zynga made it to the final and won-- so everyone knows how much faith to out in online polls. Rhymes with hero.

On the contrary, the defeat of Zynga is quite telling and if nothing else, reinvigorates the faith we should have in the greater gaming community.

Zynga pulled out all the stops. They did every single dirty trick in the book to gather votes for their semi-final against Valve. Everything from sending spam to all Zynga players which wouldn't go away till the player voted for Zynga, offering ca$h rewards for voting for Zynga, going on a super-massive self promotion campaign on facebook and many well known internet forums, as well as many many more underhanded techniques.

At the end of the day, in an unprecedented show of unity, gamers from across the gamer nation stood together and managed to beat back the abomination that is Zynga. I mean seriously, just look at the voting numbers. More people voted for Zynga then almost every other poll combined (over 22,000+ voted for Zynga!). For Valve to have beaten Zynga at that stage just goes to show exactly how many real gamers put aside their differences for the greater good.

So no, I do not agree with your sentiment. Instead, the Zynga vs. Valve poll only reinforced my already existing faith in gamers. The poll itself served as nothing more then a stage where this unity was displayed.

It is also good to know that one of my longstanding beliefs is shared by a large portion of the gaming community. That being that Zynga and companies of its ilk are, on the whole, very bad for the games industry and we should do as much as we can to distance ourselves from them.

As far as Bioware vs Valve goes, it is a worthy match-up. Both are fantastic development houses and both have produced some of the most memorable and influential games of our time. It should be a good fight, but our real take away from this "March Madness" should be that irrespective of who wins this final, gamers win overall.

Steam is hardly much better than Zynga. It's a great demonstration of how useless online polling is, thanks to meat puppetry and the lamer effect.

Valve (steam) actually makes real games. Zynga produces mutated, one-eyed, hump backed, flash based abominations with the combined depth of a lake in Flatland.

True, in order to fight the beast, Valve had to resort to some questionable tactics as well (no point in bringing a knife to a gunfight just to remain 'honorable'), but overall, their use of those tactics was limited to just the bout with Zynga.

Zynga had been firing with their underhanded tactics on all cylinders since the start of the contest.

Furthermore, all Valve did was alert their community through the Steam page. Zynga actually was offering ca$h rewards, spamming their community members constantly both through the forums, email and facebook/twitter. Visiting the Zynga forums meant that to browse any topic you had to first click through a massive ad by Zynga telling you to vote, and many more such tactics which, we can all agree, are not even in the same zip code as what Valve was doing.

Truth be told, all this is irrelevant since the basic fact remains unchanged. Valve actually makes real games, Zynga doesn't. Zynga should not have even been in that contest, let alone have gotten to the semi-finals (which they only did by pressuring people who don't even play games, i.e. the 'facebookers' to vote for them or suffer endless ad-spam).

Not only did I vote, both on the forum and Twitter, but I made my own little blog update: http://dantem.wordpr...oware-vs-valve/

That's my contribution!

I'm more of a fan of Valve's games, but then again, they have been refusing to drop that ridiculously dated Source Engine they created years ago and they do take forever to actually produce their products.

Source engine may be dated but it still looks pretty good and it's relatively low hardware requirements make Source-based games accessible to wider audience. A lot of gamers still use single core computers, I'd say that using Source actually helps Valve increase it's profits thanks to larger accessibility of their games.

But I must agree that they take their sweet time when releasing anything (with the exception of kinda pointless L4D2)...

Much as I rightly love Valve, my vote simply has to go to BioWare. Half-life 2 + episodes (I don't like L4D or L4D2, TBH) is probably the best game ever made from an artistic perspective - the game design is flawless, the plot is immaculate, the characters are beautiful, the engine still holds up well six years on and the world created is spectacular. It is definitely within my top three games of all time, and I expect it will remain there for a long, long time.

However, BioWare has consistently delivered games that are in my top ten of all time. KotOR, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. These games are the best reason I can give for why I am still a gamer today, and why I now love western RPGs. Sorry Valve, truly a worth opponent, but my vote goes to BioWare. I cannot think of two developers more qualified to win this, though - both are paragons of our industry and deserve all the praise they get for the superb titles they have repeatedly delivered and the things they have pioneered.

Seeing as Valve hasn't released any Half-Life games in years, and hasn't bothered to update HL2 and HL2: EP1 with achievements as they promised they would, I'm gonna vote for Bioware this round. Also because Bioware is pumping out awesome Mass Effect games, and ESPECIALLY because of Miranda's presence in ME2.

Also, Bioware is doing something new for gaming by adding relationships to games, and I'm happy to see it happen. Valve hasn't even put a toe in the water in that area yet. Bioware is way ahead of Valve for now in my book.

My 1st RPG was KOTOR, my 1st FPS was Goldeneye...

Since KOTOR sits at my #3 best games ever list (beaten by the N64 Zeldas) Im voting for Bioware. Valve is great though and im super excited for Portal 2 but....Bioware is amazing.

I had to vote for Valve. They have not made a single game I didn't love. Even with all the crap over L4D2 I fell in love with the game especially as the mods began to come out and I realized that it added to the L4D experience in a huge way (MUCH larger than anything Bioware has done for any of their games)

I guess it helps that I got L4D2 at Expansion price thanks to STEAM, also provided by Valve. Sent over $100 dollars during that Christmas special, got about 15 games.

I vote bBioware HL never apealed to me, I didnt like prtal, L4D was ok, L4D2 less than a year later was pathetic. Bioware made ME1 and ME2 both ate up a good number of hours, now I have dragon age which is amazing. Bioware ftw.

IMO this should be Bioware V Bethesda best rpg devs there are.

both companies make excellent games, but Bioware has more variety and they don't use the same engine over and over again.

Valve 52.9% (8920)

BioWare 47.1% (7943)

This makes me a saaad panda, although I'm still happy for Valve. I do hope Bioware pulls out in front though.

This is tough. Two of my favourite companies.

Valve created Half Life, Portal and Steam, and gave birth to games such as Garry's Mod and Counter Strike.

Bioware created Mass Effect and KOTOR (the only Bioware games I've played, I'm not a PC gamer.)

Tough decision.

I choose Valve, merely for what they did with Steam and storytelling in Half Life.
