If you do try going only part way, be sure to match the upgraded video card to a high quality power supply rated for plenty of Amps to handle the video card's requirements. Far too often, this step is skipped, and that is a terrible idea, which only leads to frustration.
Did you ever visit nVIDIA's own forums to find out what that Quadro you have amounts to when compared to where its processor chip came from?

(Edit) Looking at the two cards (GT230, and 8600 GTS), the comparison isn't quite as cut and dried as I made it sound when I answered.
IMO, it's a not a good value, overpriced for its (comparatively) limited
performance. The 240 is the one to buy, if you want a current Geforce,
but not a High Performance part. For a bit less money, you can have a
somewhat higher performing older Geforce,
such as the 8600 GTS.
The 220 has the advantage of added shader units that the 8600 GTS can't compete against just on the basis of its superior memory bandwidth -- therefore, if the cost difference is minor, that 220 may be a better buy after all . . I'll see what Newegg is selling some Geforces for and get back to this. Sorry for the too-quick response!

Amazing coincidence. For some reason, I'd been going along here with slightly less of my occasional impatience, not being even slightly sarcastic, and now I discover what we have in common. I've been gone since I was still a barely-mobile rug-crawler, but I was born in Palmerston North.
Anyway, on this link, we have a review page for ME-1 versus the GT 220 card (it didn't do very well):
www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gt-220-review-test/8
For some reason, they didn't include any data on the GT 240, or 9600 GSO, however. Given the age of the 8600 cards, I understand that neither the GT nor the GTS was represented. (The GTS is quite a bit better than the plain 8600 GT).
Of all the cards you reported having found, I have already suggested that the Geforce GT 240 was the one to go with, but the Radeon HD 4770 is a very good one, also. Newegg only sells in and ships to the US, Canada, and China, but I use them for a pricing reference all of the time.
They have an Asus brand GT 240 video card for $80 after rebate, and that's a good deal.
They also have the HD 4770 I already mentioned (performance in between the GT 240 and GT 250) for $90 after a rebate, so if you can apply a currency converter to NZ monetary numbers, that's what to look for pricewise.
