Hi,

I have a problem running the PC version of ME1 downloaded from Direct2Drive this weekend.

My system details as follows:

Processor:  Intel® Petium® D CPU 2.80GHz 2.79GHz
Ram: 2.0GB
Video Card:  ATI Radeon HD5570, 1.0GB
Driver Version: 8.712-100302b-096978C-AT1 (downloaded today)
Sound:  ATI High Definition Audio Device
Driver Version: 6.57.0.6602
Operating System:  Windows Vista Home Basic OP2
Direct X Version; 11

I have downloaded the game, run the install and installed both patches up to version 1.02, yet when the launcher boots up, I click play and I get an error message from windows saying ME1 has stopped working and windows will contact me once a solution is found (not exact words).

I have read through this entire thread and although some simelar problems are present, everyone seems to have solved theirs.

I could really use your help, have I just wasted my time and money on this game?

Many Thanks in advance

Hrm, that is strange. On Vista/7, the first thing to try generally is to run the game in Windows XP compatibility mode and/or with administrative rights.

Also, are you sure the downloadable patches are compatible with D2D games? I know that with some services (e.g. Steam) you aren't supposed to apply stand-alone patches to games. I don't know if that's the case with D2D though as I have yet to use that service.

Is there any other way to switch to XP compatibility mode or run as administrator as every time I right click on the icons, windows exporer resets.

"FAT 16/32 File Systems not supported for Digital Download"

does that mean anything to anybody, does that mean my version of windows is unsupported?

It means there's a screwup somewhere. 16-bit was abandoned ten years ago.

I don't believe FAT32 is supported for Vista upwards... I may be wrong I guess. The file system is the structure for storing data on your drive. Windows NT upwards use 'NTFS' instead of the (old) FAT32 model which was commonly found in Windows 95/98. The only things I know of that commonly use FAT32 these days are flash drives and other external media that is designed to be moved between operating systems.

You can easily check your drive by right-clicking on it in "My Computer" and pressing properties. It should tell you the type and file system near the top.

If Windows explorer is crashing merely when you click on a program I would do a filesystem check/scan ("chkdsk/f" at a command prompt).

I've had several dual-boot (and one triple-boot) setups with various Windows OSes, and Windows7 is happy to use Fat32.  I never purchased Vista.  I did have both of the public Betas for it, and my tests were negative.  I've forgotten if the experiments were strictly NTFS, but I "probably" also used Fat32 with that one.  Fat-16 was MS-DOS and the earliest Windows forerunners (max size 2 GBs, I believe).

Fat-32 dates to 1996, and the OSR2 version of Win95, I think.

I believe this may also be caused by certain versions of the wonderful infection known as Securom. IIRC ME1 was released at around the right time for its version of Securom to have the "bug" where right-clicking on .exe files crashes Explorer.

If that's the problem, Sony/Securom did have some sort of fix for it, I believe - might be as simple as updating Securom somehow.

pjunkel - If the 1GB you are referring to is your system mem/RAM (and not your gpu memory), then you might want to consider adding more RAM. I'm not sure what ME1 lists for minimum requirements, but even if it says 512 or 1GB, most systems need at least 2GB or so to handle a somewhat modern game smoothly.

Wait, I could be completely off here but how is the hard drive you're using formatted? I remember hearing that steam games and the like don't work on FAT32 hard drives because some of the files are over 5gbs and FAT32 hard drives don't even recognize that files that big exist. Hope this helps.

Game box says 1GB RAM for XP and 2GB for Vista.
