I just finished the quests in Redcliff and when I got back to camp I noticed that the companions I had left back at camp didn't gain any experience. Some of my companions are now 2-3 levels behind my PC. Is this normal or is it a bug? I followed this game before release and everyone seemed to be under the impression that companions leveled along with the PC whether or not they were in the party.

I hope there is a way to fix this because it pretty much forces you to take the same companions with you for the entire game unless you enjoy having your companions be a lot weaker than your PC.

I'm also noticing that party members are falling behind. 3 lvls is a lot to miss.

I haven't used Sten at all... haha... the game better not force me to use him in the future because he'll be like 10 lvls behind everyone else if this trend keeps up.

My Dog gains experience, but Sten doesnt. Maybe you have to have them in your party once or something?

funny actually, but i did all the side quests etc up to where you get sten, and he was 2 levels higher than me when i got him, now he is 3 and a half levels ahead of me which is kinda the opposite of what your talking ablout.

Pull them into your party, they will gain all the levels the xp would have gotten them

They do? I have not noticed so. I was placing them in my party once in a while, but none ever leveled.

If I add a character to my party after I gain a level they are usually ready to be leveled-up also (side note: I have the PS3 version maybe it makes a difference?)

i just remember using the 3 same people, then when one of the others was forced into my party for story reasons, they jumped up to 8 levels at a time

Unfortunately adding them to the party doesn't level them up for me. Though perhaps this bug is specific to Sten as he is 3 levels behind while no one else is more than one lvl behind. But that might be because I've used him the least and the experience lost from not being in the party has been distributed more evenly across the other companions.

So far I have all my companions gaining levels, I think you need to have them in your party least once, and then they are 'activated' or something. I am unsure of this however.

I left my dog out of my party and then when I added him he gained 2 levels at once so it seems to work some of the time. Or maybe just for the pet cause he starts at the same level. I have noticed at the begining that I am levels lower than those I pick up. I thought this was kind of strange and maybe I was too low a level for where I was.

They need to either make version specific forums(360, PS3, PC) or make it part of your Avatar ot Sig. Because people are posting things and not saying wither it is PC, 360 or PS3 versions of game, when you post something and you say it does not work or works for you it is EXTREMELY helpfull if you say what VERSION you have. commone since it would seem?

Dog was two levels behind me after I was forced to leave him in Ostagar for the darkspawn blood hunt (*glares*) and he did not catch up when I got him back after the Joining, nor when I left the party camp after Lothering. The poor mutt is still lagging behind by over a level and a half.

PC version here.

(Though this should be posted in the Tech Support forum IMO.)

on my PS3 version, my characters do not gain levels in camp, However I have not attempted to place them back into my party since I dropped them there levels ago, they stay there because I don't want them. I assumed it was working correctly......the character isn't out doing anything with me physically so they don;t gain anything. Looks from the responses though that you just need to put them back in party and they will gain all the levels you need.

My members at camp get exp, but not always. For some reason, my current party has to be a level ahead. Lets say both me and Alistair are level 14, and i leave him at the camp. He will not get any experience until i reach level 15. Very strange.

I have the same issue at the moment.

My current group is leveling just fine, but Alistair, Oghren etc. are stuck at 0/9000 XP needed for Level 16 while my main char is indeed level 16. Putting them into the group (in Orzammar) doesn't help either.

I hope it's not a bug but a mechanism that holds them back until I am level 17.

If it is a bug, then I'll have a problem. I changed to Shale for Orzammar but was planning to put Alistair back into place afterwards.

I hope that he'll gain levels again, then.

Has anyone new information on this issue?

360 version, everyone gains their levels while sitting in camp, whether part of my party or not.

ps3. my characters do not level in camp - i have to include them in the party (even if it's just to see the merchant, tegrin) and then they catch up in levels.

interesting that the character-scaling works so differently on the different platforms.

@EmeraldViper - i agree that the platform that you play on should be in your sig or avatar. much less confusion that way.

Still hoping my I'll not have to stick with my Orzammar party till the end.

I'll report again when my main is 17 and the others still don't gain levels, even when added to the group.

The way it should work:

If you are level 16, when you add someone to your party and they are less than level 15, they will be raised to level 15.

Are you clicking on the Plus sign beside the character portraits to bring them to the level up screen? If you don't check autolevel in the gameplay preferences you have to level them manually once you leave camp with them in your party. I always level manually, and when I add a character who hasn't been out of camp for awhile I usually have to level them up. (PC Version).
