Uh... despite what others have said, ranger is a very strong spec. Bard is good too, but depends on high cunning to really shine. In terms of pure damage, ranger >= bard. For your build, focus on dex, and enjoy the ranger--it's awesome. And before anyone says it, no, ranger pets don't steal exp. That's a myth.

Assassin is kinda lame for archers, because you have to be really close to use mark of death and most of the other talents are wasted on a ranged character. For a high dex archer, duelist or bard and ranger is really best.

Ditched my previous character and remade... doing a bit better this time, but my damage contribution is STILL pitiful it seems.  I have the Ranger tree maxed out, so my Dire Wolf does quite a bit of damage... more damage than me, I think.  Kill Shot is certainly nice, but the cooldown is horrendously long, and aside from that... Oi.  Went for Bard as my secondary spec, but I just got it so I don't have any points in it yet.  Wouldn't seem logical to bring Leliana because her starting points are all in Archery, so that's all a waste just to have her go melee.

It's when you get to Awakenings that Assassin becomes significantly more viable and Duelist becomes redundant.

The Bard's contribution is greater from a party standpoint, less from a personal one.

Archers tend to have low damage in general.  Get a good bow with Rapid Aim on it (I like Falon'din's Reach), and high dexterity and decent cunning and you'll do well.  Stealth every time it's available for a free crit.  Stealth is also handy for sneaking up and sniping mages at the beginning of a fight.

The reason people (still) think pets steal exp is that the scrolling combat text doesn't display experience gains when your pets kill enemies.  Simply mousing over your experience will prove otherwise, and, as far as I know, the game has always worked that way.  The patch notes record no change:  http://social.biowar...page/da-patches  I guess the reason someone decided to say it was changed via patch is that they were so sure they right, when they realized they were wrong they said, "Oh, I guess that must have been changed in the last patch."

I had a rogue-archer who was a dream. I went for cunning+dex, he had only 21 in strength, dumped some in will and constitution, and got him lethality and evasion. Specialications were bard and duelist, first one just to get song of valor and distraction. Played on hard, and he was so much fun. I thought him more as a supporter than damager. But yeah, my favorite character.

I just remade a rogue archer for Awakenings (console version). I am still having trouble sorting through the statistics on all the threads and for which versions.

What adds directly to damage more efficiently on the console version of awakenings, dexterity or cunning w/lethality? Also, does that answer change if you use shortbows vs. longbows?

Hmmm... My lvl 24 dalish ranger/bard was doing 650+ damage with Arrow of Slaying. Never missed and dodged most things as well.

Granted, I did have a combat mod at the time that fixed the dex bug... wonder if that made the results invalid.

Yeah, that's what I'm not sure about. From what I understand there still is a dex bug on the console versions that was never fixed? If that is the case is cunning the better way to go for rogue archers, or is the bug only for daggers...

Isn't the 1.03 patch out for xbox360?  The dex bug should be fixed...

You absolutely need two things to make archery viable and damaging - repeater gloves from RtO (what the hell is RoT supposed to be?) and Aim/Master Archery. Most items that reduce the time it takes to aim a shot reduce it by 0.2 or 0.3 seconds. The Repeater Gloves reduces it by 3.0 seconds. Whether or not this is an error, they are essential in allowing you to use Aim and still be able to fire at the maximum possible rate.

If you're intent on following your own preconceptions of what your character should be (e.g. Ranger), then you are ignoring the mechanics of the game, or at least making them subject to your role playing goals. That's fine, but it won't accomplish what you're asking. To get the most out of archery *damage* you should take Dex high enough to use the best bow available and put the rest into Cunning. Then make sure you take the Bard specialization. There are a few reasons for this:

Bard's song of courage adds to critical chance and all bard songs' effectiveness are based on Cunning. If you have a higher critical hit chance, you will do more damage in the long run.  This critical chance is then doubled by Aim.  You can see how this adds up as you acquire better equipment.

Provided you have taken the Lethality talent, Cunning and Dex determine your damage bonus with bows (instead of Strength and Dex). Since Cunning also determines your armor penetration, you get twice the benefits from the attribute. Beyond level 12-14, with an item or two that adds to attack and keeping Heroic Offense on your archer at all times, you really won't have a need for more Dex since your attack will be 140+. Taking Duelist as your second specialization will increase this further.

Archery builds are slow starting since they rely heavily on equipment and talents that aren't available until level 10+.  By around level 12, however, they really begin to shine providing you don't get sidetracked in your talent selection.

Well I played with Assassin and Duelist and max Dex as far as possible. I only get enought strength to wear the armor i want. I played with 1.01 the first time and I did over 1000 damage crits. So even elite Mobs were only onehits.

With Awakening it gots senseless since I got ~90% crit at over 150 Dex.

I dont like Bard or Ranger because the passive benefits are not as good as the other and since I have low stamina I want them all for my special shots.

Why are so many people still under the impression that dexterity adds 1 attack per point to range? It doesn't. Strength and Dexterity each add .5 attack per point to both melee and ranged. There was even a Bioware post months back pointing this out, and I recognize some of the names of people posting this as fact as people who were posting back then as well. The in game dexterity tooltip is wrong.

That said, do short bows and long bows really not get half a point of damage from dexterity on the 360? Bows always worked properly on PC, only the daggers were bugged.
