Lead Writer of Dragon Age's lore plus the man behind "The Calling" and "The Stolen Throne"

Update: We have just published part two! Click here ...

In our continuing series of bringing you interesting BioWare interviews, we are proud to present you our first part of our exclusive interview with David Gaider, the Lead Writer for Dragon Age: Origins. Due to the length of the complete interview we agreed to present it in a three-part series.

We’ll start with the basic question of who are you and what role do you play whereas Dragon Age is concerned? Additionally what is it like to work for BioWare: any amusing anecdotes you’d be willing to share?

My name is David Gaider and I’m the Lead Writer for Dragon Age. This means that I’m involved in decisions regarding the game’s overall narrative – how the story is going to be presented to the player and how characters are going to be interacted with.

Is the second part where DG sends his favoritist prophetess ever a personal callout for spreading His Word?

Or is it the third part?

That said, awesome to read this. Thanks for doing this and for posting.

EDIT: May I mention, your editor's "name" made me giggle a bit?

Interesting interview. Not sure why you're splitting it up if each part is only two questions though.

Why would that be in an interview with the games writer who has nothing at all to do with that?

Good stuff. He needs to write another book though... one without limitations placed on him. I'd wait in line for that.

I enjoyed that interview - enlightening. I reckon, I might them get books. I play the game enough - makes sense. Seems like a good bloke to me.

It should be the first question asked to anyone from BW.

Sounds to me like you are still a puppy - running around in circles and piddling on the floor, not yet been able to work out the scale of things.

EA/BW has lots and lots of people doing stuff: coding, drawing things, deciding things, adding stuff up. This particular chap writes the story, you know with words, not stuff like func_hero_swing_sword(dmg, def). He does: Once upon a time, there was...

Clearer now?

Sounds like you do not understand that waiting for six months to get basic bugs fixed in a game means that anyone associated with BW needs to be asked the question of when they are going to pull their fingers out of their collective asses, stop releasing crap DLC and actually fix the game.

Is that clear enough fanboy?

Wow...that was mean...

On a more related note...I've read both of David Gaider's books. I enjoyed them both and I'm considering reading them again. I hope he writes more books for the series. It would be a shame to have someone else do any of the writing for Dragon Age. That sort of thing leads to atrocities like Jeph Loeb's taking over Hulk after Greg Pak's World War Hulk...not good...I hope that doesn't happen with Dragon Age.

Do you realize that if you do that it only results in that no one from Bioware will talk to you anymore? Its not like that will get any patch even a day sooner. Only that they stop communicating all together

Do you realize that BW has to START communicating before they can STOP! No one from BW has talked to us in the Xbox tech forums PERIOD! There was one random BW dev. that posted cut and paste template responses just after Awakenings, but that was a very transparent attempt at PR BS spin. When it became obvious that Awakenings is just as bugged as DA:O he very quickly disappeared.  So in SIX MONTHS we have had 4 "BW dev" responses to over 180 threads.

Good interview. The story of how David Gaider ended up at BioWare was a nice read. :) Talk about serendipity! I knew he worked in a hotel once, but up until today I thought he left that job voluntarily to work at BioWare.

Look people.

This thread is about an interview with DG whose books I much enjoyed. There are threads about bugs and though I am no moderator, I'd really appreciate if we can keep this thread limited to discussion of this interview alone? Please?
