Do you realize that BW has to START communicating before they can STOP! No one from BW has talked to us in the Xbox tech forums PERIOD! There was one random BW dev. that posted cut and paste template responses just after Awakenings, but that was a very transparent attempt at PR BS spin. When it became obvious that Awakenings is just as bugged as DA:O he very quickly disappeared.  So in SIX MONTHS we have had 4 "BW dev" responses to over 180 threads.

so you have not gotten response in the "self help" forums? i just wanted to be sure i understood you correctly. :o

There has been no response across the board in relation to the acknowledgement of bugs. Compare the PC "self-help" forum and all the dev. responses to the Xbox and PS3 "self-help" forums. Its not like I can 'self-help' and mod the xbox game to fix all the bugs which BW should of done 6 months agao.

His comments regarding The Stolen Throne were the most interesting, I think. I mean, I adore that book -- and it transformed me into an unashamed fanboy of Maric, Rowan and Loghain -- but I did come away from it wishing it had been more than one book. An overly optimistic part of me hopes that one day, if Gaider ever has the time/inclination, we'll see some of the time-jumps fleshed out. Maybe with some of the other veterans of the Orlesian war thrown in. (Seeing Bryce, Rendon and Bryland together? Yes please!)

When reading the Stolen Throne, did you hear Simon Templeman's voice whenever you read Loghain's parts? haha. Anyone who loves the Dragon Age Origin story should read the books. It really clears the air on some things and really shows you how three dimensional Loghain really is.

just found it amusing you wanted acknowledgement on the forum designed for users to help each other and to report bugs. people from bioware have already said that they are viewing those forums for bug reports. i have also read a few posts by bioware people saying they know there's bugs. not sure what you want. there have been patches for xbox. just not as many as you'd like i guess. the first pc patch was already done on the xbox and ps3 before they were sold. they were shipped already fixed with those updates, which bioware people said on here. you just sound way too whiny and self entitled.

*lol* If someone from BioWare posts there, they get flamed for being too slow, likely being blamed for things outside of their control (it's nice when you can place blame on someone, after all), and it's not like they can lay down their problems there, most likely from legal reasons or the discomfort of revealing just how dire things are. I'm not saying lie down and take it even though it kinda sounds like it...so I'll shut up xD

Anyways, great interview ^_^

Self-entitled? I want the opportunity to play the "full game" that they advertised on the box, which I paid full price for. I will keep BW to account until they fix all of the bugs that break the game, and as a result do not allow me to play the full game. Forgive me for foolishly expecting that I would get the product I paid for. Next time I will put on the fanboy goggles and do nothing.

EA/BW has done NOTHING to fix any of the bugs, that have since been fixed on the PC, for the XBox. The DEX. bug has not even been fixed, let alone the radial menu bug or the memory leaks. After six months of waiting WTF do you expect to happen when a random dev. shows up in time for the Awakening lauch to say "we are looking into this". You may enjoy getting ripped off by EA/BW. But some of us don't.

"As to whether or not I’ll work on more Dragon Age books in the future, it’s hard to say. I wouldn’t want to say “yes, of course I will!” and then it never happens – my workload is pretty extreme, especially when we’re at the beginning of a major project."

Anyone else pick up on this?

I did but I thought he was speaking generally of how it has been in the past and likely will be again. I didn't take it as an indication BioWare has recently begun working on a major project.

From the interview:

Maybe you could tell us a little about how you came to work for BioWare? Was it just a straight up interview, or something more convoluted? Did you always want to write (if not specifically for video games[/i])?

I always wanted to write, but writing for video games specifically? I don’t think I was even aware such a job existed, to be honest. As I understand it, James Ohlen (the Lead Designer for the Baldur’s Gate series, and currently the Lead Designer on the upcoming Star Wars MMO) was looking for some new writers and asked people at BioWare if they knew anyone who might be interested and who had written something game-related to completion. A friend of mine worked as an artist for the company and handed James a rulebook for a game I’d made – unbeknownst to me, actually. So when I got a call from James asking me to come in for an interview, I was a little dubious. Did people make video games in Edmonton, Alberta? It seemed a little far-fetched. BioWare was a little company that had just finished Baldur’s Gate (the first one), a game I’d heard of but which I’d no idea had been made locally.

So I came in for the interview. In the end, despite how interesting it sounded, I declined the job offer – I was working as a hotel manager at the time and the starting wage for a game writer was a little low. Interesting or not, the entire organization seemed a little fly-by-night, like it could just up and vanish at any moment. So the following Monday I went back to work and discovered my boss, the district manager, had unexpectedly flown in – which was odd. He informed me that the management company had been bought out and they were bringing in their own managers to run the hotels. I was let go, given severance and walked off the property. So there I am going out to my car, box of stuff in hand, and thinking, “well maybe I will give that video game job a try after all.” I emailed Ray & Greg and asked if the job offer still stood, and they said it did. Eleven years later, here I am. Who knew?

Wow.  Good old fashioned Fate.

I like how honest Mr. Gaider is in describing the process of writing for a game. I hope that in his future projects the required cutting of content can turn more into true iteration, rather than just those unsatisfying quick-fix bandaids. :)

This was awesomer.

I especially like it when David Gaider talks about his books and writing them.

I wish this new project gets announced soon so that we get to see more of the "this is what I am doing" Mr. Gaider instead of him responding to "ALISTAIR SUXXORS" threads. That is the Mr. Gaider I most enjoy seeing because that is when he sounds most inspired.

Very nice interview- I love hearing the nitty gritty on how games like Origins get made. Bioware needs to announce this mysterious 2/1/2011 DA title soon!

Yeah, it was incredibly interesting to hear what it's like writing for games. I've always wondered how teams perceive cut content, as we hear about elements that were removed from a game all the time. Really, I wish we got to hear from teams like this more often.

I am dying to read the books. I won a literature set from the BioWare Bazaar auction, and I can't wait until they get here! The sample I read on amazon of "the Calling" was excellent. I've got a lot of respect for Mr. Gaider, and I hope he gets the time to write more novels in the Dragon Age universe. Dragon Age:Origins has fantastic story telling. Plot surprises early in the game had me remarking what excellent writing the game had, and it only got better. I can't wait to see what happens with Dragon Age 2 and the future development of the franchise.

The interview was great, thanks for posting a link here :)

quote" But I either have to be comfortable with the extra workload or I have to be comfortable with letting someone else touch my baby. " - end quote

A sign of Mr Gaider's artistic soul. :) I'm glad he feels this way, because sometimes, its a good idea the first time around, not afterwards when several people have changed it around to suit them. :) Then the original idea loses its depth and meaning.

Why would that be in an interview with the games writer who has nothing at all to do with that?

It should be the first question asked to anyone from BW.

Good read, especially part 2 (but thats because I already read most of part 1 elsewhere)! I hope you get to ask the 'what are you working on' question in part 3. I'm eagerly waiting for part 3 either way.
