Hacking attempts on Noveria doesn't seem like reapers style, they're confident, I don't see them hiding, I see them attacking.  Collectors could be old dark readings or new ones but they're suns that are closer to the reapers.  A lot of soverign debris disappeared and I feel there has to be a twist to come out of that.

I don't think the Reapers are trying to hacking into Noveria's various computer systems, but someone is. And based on the Quarians' mission to Haestrom and research station in Solveig, others are interested in dark energy, too. Whatever is going on, it's made a dramatic enough difference to be noticed by a lot of people. And not just recently either. Based on the descriptions given in the game, the Quarians settled Haestrom specifically to research the phenomenon and the Solveig research facilities have been around for generations.

It might have been Sovereign's Plan B if he never got the allies he needed to take the Citadel. It might be why the Reapers feel compelled to mass extinctions. It might be a weapon against the Reapers. I honestly don't have a firm opinion on the matter.

If the Reapers have been consuming stars for millions of years though, how did life even develop?

The universe is, like, really big.

We are talking about a Galaxy though and I think the Reapers are actually BILLIONS of years old now that I think of it.  Unless they consume like one star per visit they would eat a hell of a lot of them...

It's not just Dholen, there's also Solveig. And Veetor mentioning dark energy from his readings on the Collectors. And Gianna Parasini saying there's been a number of hacking attempts against the businesses on Noveria concerning information about dark energy. They're laying hints left and right in the game.

I have to pay more attention when I browse codex entries.

To the OP, I figured there was a lot more to the dark energy and the dying sun then we were allowed to see. Hopefully everything becomes clear in ME3 or 2.5 if they do an expansion.

The Milky Way is also, like, really big.

Anyway, if we're going with the current theory that the universe is some 13 billion plus change years old and Reapers are billions of years old, that might lend credence to Sovereign's claim that they have no beginning. But I think he was just trying to sound cool.

From what's seen in the game, the Reapers are at least 37 million years old, though. Still, the Milky Way has hundreds of billions of stars in it.

Yeah, but the conditions for life are probably really, really rare enough with stars dying on their own all the time.  The universe is finely tuned into producing rocks, it seems.

The theory on Dark Energy is laid out on a plate its that obvious!

I will be truly surprised if the writers just role with it considering the high quality of storytelling thus far. I hope its just a Red Herring for the fans to keep us busy... I hope...

In unison with Mythic's Warhammer MMO, the dark energy summons an orcish horde that destroys both the Reapers and Citadel forces.  The end.

My guess is that the dark energy phenomenon has nothing to do with the Reapers. It is an entirely independent phenomenon that the Reapers likely know about. My guess is that they start the extinction cycle every 50,000 years so that organics don't have time to investigate and understand the phenomenon, because it is the key to some vastly different and more powerful technologies.

The quarians are on the cusp of understanding it now because Sovereign's plots were foiled first by the Protheans, again by the krogan uplifting, and for a third time by Shepard. In Mass Effect: Ascension, Drew conspicuously goes on a pretty lengthy tangent about how the quarians are dismissed by the galaxy, but the Illusive Man thinks they are more powerful than they seem.

I think you make a great point. It will play big in the next game. You might be right as to HOW it will play. If you are not spot on you are close.
