MY AIMO COMMISSION CAME THROUGH! Not the best quality pic because I only have a small digital file for now, but I couldn't resist posting it any way. This is from Losses - just after Miranda gets kitted out in her new mage robes because she wouldn't let Wade make her maternity leather armour.
I'm so in love with it! Aimo is the best!
Why hasn't this been posted on the Alistair thread? I can clear a swath through the nudity and weirdness so it can get the attention it deserves.

That was just... wow. My two favourite PC mages are blood mages too and I was wondering sometimes if Avernus could teach them how to slow the taint. My very first mage (I've lost that savegame) was Alistair's mistress and a blood mage as well and I had a feeling that she might use her magic to conceive a bastard for her power-thirsty plans. Well, you're touching the most exciting part of the Dragon Age universe and I can't wait to read more about it!Miri1984 wrote...

I am all about the blood mages, mostly since I adore ethically murky areas.
And I'm sure I've said it before, but I love how you have happy-childhood!Anders. It really does make more sense (well, to me) that he would have come from a loving environment. Not only in terms of his adult personality, but also with the degree he hated the tower. It seems like unless he knew something better was out there he wouldn't have tried for freedom SO many times. I think giving him an unhappy youth wouldn't have made the tower seem all that bad, since it was at the very least a full belly and a bed.

Yup, I think most mages DON'T get that, through Chantry doctrine as much as anything, which is why parents don't fight to keep their kids. If you look at the stolen generations in Australia, NOTHING can erase the trauma of being taken from your parents and even the most lacklustre of parents will fight to the death to keep their children, so the parents of mages must be completely brainwashed to think their children are evil incarnate. Otherwise you'd have a lot more rioting whenever the Templars came to call. It never sat right with me in the DA universe, that people like Wynne's parents would just sit back and say "Ok, take her away then!"
Of course, then you get Isolde - who I'm NOT particularly fond of - and what can happen if they're NOT taken away... Which is why Anders has a mage mother who can teach him and Jairo how to hide it.
I do think that Anders just doesn't like blood magic because he's basically squeamish about his own blood. But he's got that strong moral compass thing going for him as well, so I imagine a lot of his reactions would be similar to Alistair's when faced with it. He hasn't seen it in full action yet, of course, unlike Neria...

Well, if Anders is anything like my canon mage, he wants to avoid Blood Magic because it's such a Game Over button if he gets caught. I'm pretty certain that even if you give him to Rylock when she catches you trying to destroy his phylactery he still gets taken back to the Tower rather than executed (I think) so I get the feeling that they really don't want to kill him if they don't have to. It could complicate things were he a Blood Mage.
And I, too, love your version of Anders' childhood, Miri. It fits him perfectly and I love that it's so positive. I'm fairly appalled at the way the families of mages are depicted throughout the game (and even Isolde's motives come from "my baby will be evil like the men in my family and won't be able to be arl!" rather than "I'll never get to see my son again!" sort of place). The one thing that keeps me from utterly despising Eamon is the fact that he keeps in close contact with his son and supports Connor as a mage.

I always worry that Anders isn't disapproving enough of blood magic in my fic. I wanted an any means necessary blood mage warden, and sometimes I reread the old stuff and feel like he's a bit too "oh my blood magic! eh, well, you're cute, so I'll just ignore that for now." The whole reason I went back and tried to add in hints that they had a strange mutual crush on each other in the tower was just to sort of handwave that bit into something more realistic.
I have to agree that that kind of trauma isn't something people can walk away from. I think the discussion with Jowan in the mage origin where he gripes a bit but ultimately shrugs it off is a little too flippant for me. I don't see it as due to how young he was, either.
I know in the 1920s my grandfather and his brothers were taken from their father and put in foster care (their mother sort of took off, and back then it was rare for single fathers to raise kids. Particularly immigrant single fathers who barely spoke a word of English). Even until he died in his 80s he would have trouble talking about those years. I do know they all ran away repeatedly to go back to their father, ultimately until the courts gave up on keeping them away. He was maybe five, and that seems younger than the average mage. So I have at least one IRL example of someone who couldn't just brush off that kind of separation, even seventy years later, and even when he was eventually allowed to return to his family.
It really bugs me that the only time you see a parent who wanted to keep their mage child was Isolde. I think it's a combination of brainwashing, as you said, and a lack of evidence to the contrary of what the Chantry tells people. Maybe they DO want to keep their kids, but honestly believe they'll become demon-possessed monsters if they try. Maybe even more towards the latter, since few people ever see adult mages and when you hear about them it's about apostates and blood mages being hunted by templars.
I made it a plotline of my fic since I thought seeing something so contrary to what the Chantry says, a mage Warden ending the blight and all, might put a dent in the Chantry propaganda among common people.

Blood magic *sigh* In my fic I have a terrible problem with it. Because Anders's getting caught between two grey warden women and they both are blood mages. And he falls in love with one of them and probably too fast. But I got the impression about him that he's not going to judge you or be prejudiced against you. Because that's what he's been suffering during all his life (I think I've seen this thought in your fic too, Miri). I used this as an excuse for his sudden crush on the pretty blood-mage girl

I do think there's a fair bit of "ooh, icky" about Anders and blood magic. I know I have that feeling when I think about cutting myself (although I've had some pretty ace injuries in my time, so I'm not squeamish about getting hurt, just about hurting myself).
On a side note. Galagraphia has been working her magic again. I put this in the Anders thread, but it has to go here as well. I am soooo lucky. I bemoan the fact that I can't draw, but there are all these wonderful people willing to do it for me! I love you!

Fractures Chapter 13 up.
I had intended a chapter of Shades of Grey, but Galagraphia's beautiful picture inspired me to stick with Anders and Neria. It's my new desktop. New Shades of Grey tomorrow.

This is great! But I think Jori's wife name was Helena, not Hannah, if you meant her of course.
Lol, I love how Neria and Anders dealt with that Alan )))

Ah! I've got a Helena already, which is really annoying, because I've already doubled one name in this fic... BLAST. I never got the dialogue which told us Jory's wife's name. I'm going to pretend ignorance of it unless people are really annoyed by it if that's ok.
I'm stumped with Shades of Grey but totally inspired for Fractures, so I'll be sticking with Fractures for the time being. Shades of Grey is harder to write and I did want to take my time with it, so I hope no one minds...

I was going to write another "awwwww" or "squeeee" when I suddenly realized that it's what I'm usually writing. Oh, I'm so ashamed, I must expand my vocabulary with a few more interjections which could be used as exclamations of joy, love and adoration. Or I'll just start acting like elcors, writing something like: "Enormous adoration and unimaginable amusement: I'm so happy when I read your fanfics, Miri, no matter what's it about, as long as there are Neria and Anders in it"
