that I prefer the default pistol to the hand cannon.

I realized after looking at the favorite weapon thread that apparently everyone loves the handcannon... but I find the default pistol much more useful because it has a comparable dps (tap dat button guys) and a higher number of clips. I decided this without actual damage stats, but according to the wiki..."The M-6(handcannon) deals a total of 2,049.6 damage as opposed to the M-3(default pistol)'s 2,678.4 total damage." Not all the pickups are upgrades, guys.

I think the handcannon has higher armor penetration, which is all I use it for anyway.

There you go, obligatory flame :D Are you sure about the armour thing, though? The hand cannon really seems to chomp away at that.

I love the Predator! The Carnifax is ok, and fun to mess around with, but the Predator is just a better pistol in my hands.

The Carnifax runs out of ammo way to fast, especially for a pistol. It's also difficult to replenish ammo, as thermal clip only give you back two rounds each. That is ridiculous.

I agree with OP. Starter pistol is better for me. I tend to only use the hand cannon on mech missions, because it's easier to single headshot a hacked mech with it.

For the most part, I'd rely on the starting pistol for most classes until I get a weapon specialization.

Is preferring the Predator supposed to be really rare or something?

Predator is the better choice for builds with fewer weapons that end up relying more on their pistols. The DPS difference is not that large; not large enough for the Carnifex to compensate for the relative lack of ammo. Widow Infiltrator, Claymore Vanguard and Shotgun Sentinel would probably be better off with Predator.

The Carnifex is better for builds that don't rely on their pistol very much, like an AR user. It's probably also the better choice for anyone carrying the Viper, since the Viper is basically a rapid-firing scoped Carnifex with lots of ammo.

It's all a matter of preference. The Predator has a larger clip and a faster rate of fire, but low damage. The Carnifex, on the other hand, is all about the Power, and it sacrifices clip size and rate of fire for it. The Predator takes more shots to do what the Carnifex can do in a single shot, but the Predator is also more forgiving when you miss, as you've got more ammo to work with.

You can try to min/max it all you want, but at the end of the day, it really comes down to personal preference.

Look at it this way the predator has to do more shots to equal the dmg of 1 hand cannon shot. On insanity you cannot stay out of cover for as long so something that can do 1-2 shots quickly with accurate headshots is preferable. If you are not playing on insanity than you can use anything because the game is that easy...

This argument is really only valid if you fire one single Carnifex shot then go back into cover. The Predator fires a lot faster. By the time you fire 2 Carnifex shots, you can get 3 or 4 Predator shots.

I use the Handcannon as a hold out gun. I prefer using my Assault Rifle/Tempest SMG for most of my matters.

My argument is Valid because even though it fires faster it is not as accurate in the time it takes to get 2 headshots with the hand cannon is going to be the same or less than the time it takes to line up and land all four shots with the recoil.

Eh, depends on what you're up against.

For example, my infiltrator usually takes the carnifex 'cos it's all about the combos. Shoot, pull (thx jacob), incinerate, shoot or somesuch.

Pretty much only use it against armour anyway. Like krogans and mechs. When I'm not keen on wasting sniper ammo. Or the rare case of cloak, point blank headshot, melee.

Against husks, I put cryo ammo on the predator, and it's godly. Incinerate blast to strip armour, then a single shot to freeze each husk.

I prefer the Carnifex as it suits my cautious playstyle better, I'm more about lining up that single, bursty headshot personally

I don't think a damage meter is a very accurate representation of an upgrade, and I don't view the Carnifex as such. It's a different weapon, catering to a different playstyle, and can also serve a different function apart from the obvious armor penetration similarity.
IMO, there are situations and playstyles that revolve around burst, and others that revolve around more sustained damage. So I can't really consider one of the two to be objectively "better". :)

If I'm not mistaken, bullet for bullet (literally the entire clip + spare), the Predator edges out the Carnifex by a about...500 damage or so. If you're the type who uses pistols often, definitely go predator. If you mostly use your pistol to take down heavily armored targets, Carnifex is for you.

You guys miss the point of the carnifex, is not to shoot a bunch of bullets and try to hit something. It is a powerful weapon, you ever tried going for the head with it? one shot kill anyone? at health bar and gets armor down fast.

Its your last resort weapon, good for weak or armored enemies like the vorcha or mechs or krogan, shredder ammo ftw!

This pistol is not a manner of upgrade is just choice, like the vindicator 3-4 rounds per trigger, when the assault rifle just keeps firing, when you think about it all weapons are players option not really the next upgrade of the weapon. Its just what suits you and your class

The Carnifex isn't going to oneshot anything on Insanity, even with a headshot. Think it usually takes around 3-5 headshots for a standard enemy, depending on range, defense and ammo type.

It really depends on your other weapons. As a predominantly Vanguard player who usually takes the AR training bonus, the Hand Cannon is definitely the way to go. I don't need to worry about the extra ammo at all. My pistol only comes out against YMIR mechs when they get down to their armor layer and the HC does a better job in that role.

For my Widow using Infiltrator, the Predator is better. I could use the extra ammo and the better "all around" weapon.

It really depends on the class and what you're using it for.
