My main problem with it is that it contributes to the sense that the Asari were created as "space babes" for male players to drool over - which is not a very compelling raison d'etre. So convenient, then, that the Asari extol cross species relationships (such as one with a human, for example) yet stigmatize asari x asari offspring.Azint wrote...

Not to mention that terrible "we gotta mate with other species" thing in Asari culture.

Exactly, you cannot say their isn't, because you have no proof. Just like we can't say their is.
BUT, luckily for us, the possibilities are on our side. We've already started observing other planets outside our solar system. Their big planets, gas giants because we're just started doing it, later (actually fairly soon) we'll be able to observe smaller planets, much like our own in size. We can tell what type of atmosphere it's made of, something to do with how the planets stars light bounces off it or something. Won't get into it now.
If we don't blow our selves up... The future is starting to look very promising.
Also, look up Fusion tech. That's gonna be our stepping stone.
When this planet can no longer sustain life, and we have to travel to another star system to find something habitable, it's probably not going to be my problem.
Because I will most likely be dead. Either of old age, or I'll die when the next world war for the last valuable resources breaks loose.
Or when someone with power/nukes goes nuts and starts the apocalypse.

Maybe we blow our selves up, maybe we all become hunky-dory and have peace or what ever.

Humans
We know humans, humans will more likely than not get into the pants of anything they can.
Ref. the internet
Salarians
They focus heavily on reproduction, while having no active sex drive. This custom illustrates their business and no nonsense image very well, which contrasts heavily with what is done for humanity.
Krogan
The krogan, as a dying race, focus on reproduction as a means to save themselves. It's not made clear what their thoughts were on sex before the genophage, but obviously now they care for it only to value any children to have from it.
Asari
They are very open about sex, so much that it is their custom. The asari are keen on focusing on relationships on other races to enrich genetic diversity even though it can be done "with radiation," to show that they don't care about it. Which shows they lean more towards procreational sex with other races, even recreational. The asari are the only other race aside from humans who are so open about intimacy, that it was a perfect fit.
And not everyone wants that.

Each race has their own customs in regards to sexual deviancy, and all with varying degrees.
I realize that - and it's not particularly my point.
I am fine with the different races having their own customs - it makes sense.
The problem though, is how much sex is coupled with representation of Asari and their culture. It's very easy, for example, for the game to imply that they be more open with sexuality (which though, as you seem to imply, would still cause people [including me] to roll their eyes), without making sexuality nearly inseparable from their depictions of the Asari.
All of the other races have something critical and integral to them that I find compelling. The Turians for example are a race somewhat aligned against humans, they are rigid and straight-line thinkers. The Salarians are quick thinking, but short lived and deceptive. The Quarians are the galaxy's pariahs - they show that the galaxy is not always cake and pie.
What about the Asari? "Sexy babes who live for a 1000 years?" Really Bioware?
Though I may be seen as blowing this out of proportion - and I'm not. Ultimately I'm not really upset, just a bit disappointed.

To me the Asari always seem like 'the diplomats'. This is both their greatest strength and weakness. Because in the words of the Illusive man: "Diplomacy is great when it works, but difficult when everyone already percieves you as a threat". The Asari are diplomatic to a fault, the believe in diplomacy too much and they neglect their military skills. If it wasn't for the Salarians 'holding the line' during the Rachni wars and Krogan rebellions things could have turned out very diffierently.Collider wrote...

What I'm basically saying is that the Galaxy has a 'violence as an option' list and the Asari are right at the bottom. Not really a good place to be.

I know what you mean, the Asari set my 'scifi fanservice' alarms ringing too and my first impression of the Asari was that Bioware had gone for the lowest common denominator. But there is more to them than that, its jsut a shame that, as you said, its overshadowed by the 'all Female and sexy' thing.Collider wrote...
Though those are good points, Lefnt, and I agree that this may be a flaw of the Asari - it is overshadowed heavily by other, less inspired attributes.
I wonder if Bioware could somehow make a sexually promiscuous, sexy all male race using this good old trope?
*edit* I just noticed that Mass Effect is the top entry under videogames. Ha!
