Well, no, what I said before is simply mentioned in Ascension, they've got food tanks and batches aboard their liveships that hold different kinds of vegetables and algea, which are ground into nutrient paste.

You can do wonders with some good algae. Agar for example.

I can say a vegetarian hot dog is probably not that indistinguishable from an Oscar Meyer weiner. But when we come to hot dogs and sausage, I don't even know what goes into the real thing, let alone the vegetarian versions.

No, there aren't any insects on Rannoch, at all.
That meant the quarians and presumably other animals there took their jobs, and helped the vegetation reproduce.
(So instead of "the birds and the bees", you'd get "the birds and the quarians" :wizard:)
Though instead of pollen, most of this vegetation used microbes in some way, which would form a symbiotic relationship with the animals, allowing them to carry them safely. Which also resulted in the quarians' less-than-adequate immune system when compared to other sapient species.

Dude. They did manage to take the turians and get the fanbase equivalent to Tali. Or close, rather, what with there being a slight deficiency in vocal women on this forum, but trust me: they're on the Garrus thread. They're also on deviantArt, Fanfiction.net, and if you've ever looked, roughly three-quarters of the masskink meme on LiveJournal.

Well, as I've already said, what a woman finds attractive does diverge from what a male finds attractive. In stereotype. From lurking in this thread, you guys haven't really proved otherwise to me.

Ahh yes, generalities.

The fact is, what is there, will be talked about and praised. Garrus has mandibles = Mandibles are sexy. Tali has a vestigial toe = vestigial toe is sexy.

There's simply a lot of love, that's why I prefer a less anatomically attractive face because in truth, some people will be turned off by what she looks like, like some Garrus fans are turned off by what he looks like. You get over that, or you don't, I wouldn't lump the latter demographic in with the collective, though.

Suspended in time and space for a moment, your introduction to Miss Tali Zorah, who lives in a very private world of darkness, a universe whose dimensions are the size, thickness, length of a protective mask that covers her face. In a moment we'll go back into this room, and also in a moment we'll look under that mask, keeping in mind, of course, that we're not to be surprised by what we see, because this isn't just a spaceship, and Miss Zorah is not just a quarian. This happens to be the Twilight Zone, and Miss Zorah, with you, is about to enter it.

Obsession? Really, that's not what I'd call it at all. I've really only seen a few people here besides me want the Quariasn to look more alien like. For my part, the reason why I'd like to make them "inhuman" looking is because they're aliens.

Just a trend I've noticed with some posters who seem really determined that this should be 'how it is'.

The 'they're aliens' arguement doesn't really hold much water in a space opera sci-fi. It's all handwaving. Why is every race you encounter except Elcor and Hanar a bipedal race of roughly similar size? Why do most of them breath the same oxygen nitrogen atmosphere?

Pretty much the only scientific explanation would be that the Reapers or another race left behind genetic markers in early races that gave them similar evolutionary paths.

Edit: And I know what goes into hotdogs. There is a reason I don't eat them. *Shudder*

Oh, I'm sorry. I meant that they couldn't have evolved from insects because there weren't any on Rannoch.

But I guess that is too hard for some people to think of, when they're focused on finding wrong things in other people's comments.Posted Image

I think Miranda does have a larger appeal than what we find in this forum.

I don't mean to say appearance is all men care about. But appearance will tend to be the initial attractant. Yes, for women, too. I just think it is of larger importance to men from a social evolutionary standpoint which I can certainly tell you would cause nothing but a flamewar if I get into it here. Someone needs to redirect my attention to something else quarian.

Well, I am glad at least that you are making this more of an issue among men rather a specific fandom.

This case in particular is very different from what you are describing, because 1) there is little to no analog to the Quarians on earth. 2) Players do not and have not gotten to see Tali's face (if ever), yet they've interacted with the character quite a bit. 3) Player's have already started romancing her.

While people may find the curves the character has as attractive, there are other characters who are also shapely and do not have the same obstacles as Tali has. And while many men may reject women in advance if the first look they got of them they find ugly or not attractive and therefore those men may not give those women the time of day, this is a different scenario because players have been able to interact and appreciate (should they be so inclined) the character and get to know her before any possible reveal - which will turning away because of undesirable appearance less frequent and less likely.

I'm not sure what the obsession is with trying to make Tali look as inhuman as possible without the mask on, especially considering the information already available.

I try to make the asari as inhuman as possible if I can manage it. One of my favorite novels is Vernor Vinge's Deepness in the Sky where there is a very noticeable difference in a particular alien species when it's interpreted from a human viewpoint and from their actual alien viewpoint.

But I admit human characteristics are needed to establish a human connection to the various aliens. The response you get for the rachni is distinctly different from what we get to the quarians. Even reminds me of a television show where two actors were trying to create alien sexual encounters as different from humans as possible, and the director had to reign them in with a reminder that your average person had to identify with the intimacy on a human level.

Depends what kind of insects live outside of earth.
If the first insects they'd encountered were rachni, klixen or Thresher Maws...
Yeah, I don't think they'd be very happy.
(I don't think they'd be happy about an arachnid or ant infestation ruining their pic-nics either, though... >_>)

hm they most have been curios then said "what's that" and finally studied them in order to find out.

after all the quarians are a very smart race and we humans would probaly do the same.

It does for me.

Obviously, this is sci-fi so I can understand some of the implausibilities. However, something like the Asari, who are quite literally, just recolored humans with head tentacles, takes me out of the immersion by reminding me that the game is a flawed human construct. I can accept the alien races being bipedal. That's fine. It's more convenient that way. But it's very hard to believe that conceivably any alien species could look so similar to humans. This is only worsened when I realize that the Asari were created to be "sexy."

For me, anyway, it does come down to the personality. I've found women in real life just as attractive and possessing a more revolting personality than Miranda, and I wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole. They're beauty is actually inhibited by their bad attitude, is that difficult to understand?

Haestrom, 1630 AD.

Quarian Colonist: I like this place. Clean air, water... kinda warm, but not too much.
Quarian Expedition Captain: It's just as warm here as it is on Rannoch.
Quarian Colonist: Okay, fine, so it is. It's just on that time on a ship, with it's controlled atmosphere and tempurature...
Quarian Expedition Captain: Well, now you're here. *whistles* Geth! The mining supplies go over there by the first transmitter!
Geth Laborer: Yes, sir. *studders and signals the other geth loaders*
Quarian Colonist: Time to get to work! I hear we've got new samples to study and examine and -
*On pure reaction, the Colonist smacks a mosquito that just landed on him.*
Quarian Expedition Captain: ...the hell was that?
Quarian Colonist: A new discovery! Quick! I've got to get this to a lab! This species suggests a whole new direction of study!
Quarian Expedition Captain: If there's more of them.
Quarian Colonist: Don't rain on my parade, sir.

The ones who does have a good combination of both are usually already taken.Posted Image
