Just the kind of thing I wanna talk about whilst having a serious discussion about quarian biology.

j/k, but I got my eye on you.

exactly, which is why i broke of the relationship with miranda after i started talking to tali

Kudos, I guess. EA didn't help with the marketting.

Where's the blue come from? lol

This is only worsened when I realize that the Asari were created to be "sexy."

You don't think living for 10 centuries and possessing a "matron" stage has some real value on the council or just about every field?

Yes..the majority of the ones you see are dancers, but still :P

that's so much in that.

I like to observe what happens when a girl walks into the engineering lab. You get those women who wonder why it's so hard to find a decent man. Take up engineering or computer science, you'll find them quicker.

I think Miranda does have a larger appeal than what we find in this forum.

I don't mean to say appearance is all men care about. But appearance will tend to be the initial attractant. Yes, for women, too. I just think it is of larger importance to men from a social evolutionary standpoint which I can certainly tell you would cause nothing but a flamewar if I get into it here. Someone needs to redirect my attention to something else quarian.

Well, I am glad at least that you are making this more of an issue among men rather a specific fandom.

This case in particular is very different from what you are describing, because 1) there is little to no analog to the Quarians on earth. 2) Players do not and have not gotten to see Tali's face (if ever), yet they've interacted with the character quite a bit. 3) Player's have already started romancing her.

While people may find the curves the character has as attractive, there are other characters who are also shapely and do not have the same obstacles as Tali has. And while many men may reject women in advance if the first look they got of them they find ugly or not attractive and therefore those men may not give those women the time of day, this is a different scenario because players have been able to interact and appreciate (should they be so inclined) the character and get to know her before any possible reveal - which will turning away because of undesirable appearance less frequent and less likely.

It has been said before (hasn't everything...), but I think Tali's popularity stems from two main facts:

1. Mystery: No-one has seen Tali's face.  Everyone has a unique preference of what makes someone beautiful/ideal.  Because no-one has seen her face, people who are drawn to her will imagine her face to to be very beautiful... their own personal ideal.  Miranda, for example, cannot compete.  She has a face, hair, teeth, etc... like it or not.  Some like it.  Some don't.  Jack is bald, and is covered in tatoos.  Yuck.  Tali is what you want her to be... just like a novel.  And we all know novels are always better than the books... because everyone is as we imagine them to be.

2. Personality.  From the start Tali is sweet, friendly, innocent, virginal, loyal, and she has an obvious crush on sheploo in ME2.  Who doesn't want that?  We are all nice guys... and people tend to like other nice people.  Miranda is arrogant and tells you off.  Jack tells you off with a series of 4 letter words.  Both have been around the bend quite a bit which is a turn-off to modest nice-guy types.  Both Miranda and Jack are more loving once you get to know them... but for many, they burn their romantic bridges due to their ethics and dialogue early in the game.

You see, this is the part where I disagree. The alien races in Mass Effect are already so similar to humans in reality that the color of their skin or facial structure is kind of irrelevant. I don't need them to look freakish just so I know they're alien *shrugs*

The Mirandas and Jacks of the real world... I've become friends with both sorts, but I can certainly tell you it wasn't on first impression. Or second or third impressions either.

Some of Tali's mannerisms in ME2 I think are transplants from Liara's personality. Everything used to describe Tali here could easily translated to Liara from ME1. That's actually part of what irked me about Tali's character in ME2, why I prefer to push her at arm's length. I'd rather have talked about engines. What's it take to turbocharge that ship? :P

To me at least, making Tali look human means making her look less unique, when she deserves a very distinctive look. Besides, it seems that her less human physical features have seemed to have garnered the most attention and adoration (from this thread anyway), like her hands, feet, and unusually wide hips.

Just my opinion, I know others disagree; one guy called me a retard before for suggesting it.

EDIT: Wasn't trying to imply that people who feel differently are cretins prone to ad hominem attacks, just saying that I'm aware people are opinionated on the issue.

Men still have it harder. Get into a girl's good graces, suddenly you're friendzoned. Can't win.

making the aliens you interact with more humanoid makes it easier to make connections with them, much like how artwork does.

This is truth.

When I first met Miranda, I tried to be nice, but she shot me down pretty quickly.

And I can see the appeal in Jack, but she had pretty much the same problem. The first impression wasn't so friendly, and even if it's like judging a book by its cover, I'm not so much into romances that starts to blossom about half way through the main story, when I've finally managed to break the ice.

Again, a good point of why Miranda and Jack were turned off by some initially was that EA painted their pictures (and burned bridges) pretty clearly before the game was even released (MIRANDA'S BEWBS!), while they tried to keep Tali and Garrus a secret.

The very first time I even bothered to talk about Tali, it had to do with creating an alien quality to her. I got called far worse than a retard. I thought I just had the most unpopular sentiments about the character, so it's interesting to see others with similar viewpoints in the Tali thread, at least in regards to her looks.

Maybe one day I'll try to discuss what I really think about quarians taking back their homeworld. Think it would be like going into the Jack thread and saying Jack should have hair, though.

I noticed that too.

It's funny how both Liara and Tali's romances really starts when they're both talking about...eh, mating rituals among their people, and how neither of them have done it, and they both feel awkward talking about it, yet persists on doing it.Posted Image
