That's not the point.
It's Tali who feels insecure because of her race and how that might reflect on Shepard.
Would you deny her at least a few words of encouragement?

Uncomfortable ConversationsChapter 2
---------------------
He stumbled down the stairs, exhausted, before sitting on the couch in their quarters.
I haven't been this tired since the Collector Base, he thought with a groan.
Who knew politicians could exhaust me this easily? The commander sighed. He had just returned from a meeting with the Citadel Council. Ten hours spent with them going over the data from the Collector Base, his separation from Cerberus, as well as his plans for the
Normandy and Freedom's progress. Not to mention the argument he started regarding the quarians and their exile from Citadel politics and space. It was a long, exhausting day.
Then he had run into Kalisah Al-Jilani.
----------------
"Commander Shepard!"
Shepard flinched, then plastered a small smile on his face. He turned to the reporter, not surprised to see her camera already rolling. He was prepared this time.
Crossing his arms, Shepard stated simply, "No comment."
"But you don't even know what I was going to ask!" She exclaims.
He glowered at her. "It's never anything good." He turned to leave. "I'm not answering any questions." He paused when she spoke up quickly before he could leave.
"Embarrassed to answer a few questions, Commander?"
The human Spectre spun around as if he had been shot. "Come again?"
She smirked. Starting her camera, she stated, "Kalisah Al-Jilani, Westerlund News. I'm with Commander Shepard, council Spectre." She turned to him. "There have been reports from multiple sectors that the recent activation of the Omega 4 Relay was your doing."
Shepard held up a hand. "I'm not allowed to comment on Spectre business."
"Understandable, Commander," she continued without skipping a beat. "Our audience has much more relevant questions."
"From eye witness reports, you have been seen in the company of different humans and aliens," she said steadily. "Some of the humans, according to reports, are agents of Cerberus. Additionally, the ship registered to you, the
Normandy SR-2, had a Cerberus registry and symbols." Finished, she waited for a response.
"Due to the nature of my work, I can not comment on an ongoing investigation," Shepard answered after a moment. "At this time, however, neither my ship nor any of the crew have any tie to the terrorist organization Cerberus. I can say no more."
"Interesting," she drawled out. "You have on your crew a krogan, a turian, and of course your constant companion, a quarian, on your ship." Shepard arched an eyebrow, and she continued. "Her name is Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, I believe?"
"It's Tali'Zorah vas Normandy," Shepard ground out. "Is there a point to this?"
She nodded. "While it is admirable to foster cooperation with other species, is it truly in humanities best interest for the first human Spectre to seen fraternizing with a quarian? Due to their repu..."
Shepard stomped over to her until he towered over her. "Tali has stood by my side when neither the Alliance nor the Citadel was willing to do so." There was a visible struggle for him to remain calm. "I would be
very careful about what you are trying to say."
"So there
is truth to the rumor about a less than professional relationship between you and, was it miss vas Normandy, you said?" She asked with a smirk.
Emerald eyes narrowed in fury. "You overstep your bounds, miss Al-Jilani. I am willing to tolerate your biased and annoying questions in regards to me," he stated with a snarl. "My crew is off limits."
The commander took a step back. "Tali'Zorah vas Normandy is a valuable member of my crew. Our relationship, or that of any of my crew members, is none of your business. This interview is over."
He brought up his omnitool. With a quick command, an overload shot out, destroying her camera, as well as all of the recorded data. He turned back to her, and leaned forward. The reporter cowered back away from the rage in his eyes.
"I know what you are trying to do," he growled out. "Push this, and it will end very badly for you." He straightened and let out a deep breath. "For your sake, we had better not meet again." He walked away, anger clear in every step he took.
-------------------
"EDI," Shepard called out, his eyes still closed.
The AI's blue hologram appeared. "Yes Commander. How may I assist you?"
"Call Tali up here for me, would you?" He asked with a tired sigh. "After you do, please cease all contact with this floor until 0800 hours, Captain's orders."
"She is on her way commander. Logging you out."
A few minutes later, the door to the cabin opened. Tali hurried in. She saw the commander sitting bonelessly on the couch. He looked tired, and defeated. Her was concerned prior to this with the abrupt request for her presence. Her unease grew as she looked at him.
"What's wrong John?"
Opening his eyes, he smiled at her tiredly. "Long day," he said.
"The meeting with the Council not go well?" Tali asked as she moved to sit next to him. She took one of his hands, holding it between both of hers.
Shepard chuckled. "No, it was fine. No trouble beyond what I expected."
"Then what is it?"
"On the way back to the
Normandy, " he started. Taking a deep breath, he continued, "I ran into that damnable report, Al-Jilani. She was asking about you." He looked into her eyes. "About us."
Tali jumped in surprise. She could see he was worried about this. But why? "W...what did you say?"
He hit a few keys on his omnitool, and a display opened up. The 'interview' played out, including what was said after he destroyed the initial camera. Tali's eyes widened as she listened.
"Keelah!"
"I didn't know what to say Tali," Shepard said softly.
She looked over at him sadly. "Are you embarrassed about being with me?" She asked, her voice shaking.
Green eyes widened in shock. He leaned forward and pulled her into a firm hug. "That's not it at all," he said softly. He could feel how tense she was.
"I am not embarrassed about loving you Tali," he said with conviction. "Truthfully, I do not think it's the galaxies business. I don't know how you would feel about our relationship becoming a public spectacle."
Shepard's gaze fell. "I just want what's best for you Tali."
Tali finally hugged back, just as firmly. "Oh John," she murmured. She thought it over for a few minutes before answering.
"They don't need to know," she decided finally. "It will be easier for you if the galaxy doesn't know we are together." She looked up at him and smiled, though he could not see it. "I know, and that is enough for me."
He kissed her visor. "We'll leave it alone for now. But," and he looked her in the eyes, "I am not going to lie about it. You are
not a dirty secret."
"But if it makes it harder for you," she started. Shepard interrupted her.
"There you go again," he nearly growled out. "You are just as important as I am Tali."
The commander gestured first to her, then himself. "I am proud to have you with me," he said with conviction. "I won't have my mate putting herself down like that. We're equals, you and I."
"Mates? How? When did you....no,
why did you say that?" Tali asked, startled. She sat upright in shock.
With a smile, he replied, "I have a question for you, miss vas Normandy."
"Y..yes?"
He stood, pulling her to her feet as well. He looked at her lovingly, before he placed his hand over her heart and put one of her hands over his. She started to shake, realizing the significance of what he was doing.
"Stars may come and go, but hearts, hearts are eternal," he began softly. "If you'll have it, mine belongs to you, Tali'Zorah vas Normandy nar Rayya."
Tears fell down her face as she listened to the words. She nodded and said in a quavering voice, "And mine is yours, until the stars themselves fade." Reaching up, she removed her mask, letting fall to the table.
Silver streams fell unabashedly from her eyes. She reached up with her free hand and brought his face down to hers. "One heart, now and forever," she whispered against his lips, before claiming them in a passionate kiss. A kiss Shepard returned equally fervently.
Tali pushed him down onto the couch, refusing to relinquish her grip. When they stopped moving, she broke the kiss. "I love you John. Always."
"I love you too Tali. Every day."
