I don't think it has anything to do with mandibles. The concepts don't give any indication of that. It's just a design motif or something.

Number 3 has a pretty logical design too. Reducing the area of the visor, to minimize damage if an accident should occur.

I love the design on the male quarian's helmets. They're longer so more manly looking

Who knows what's going on with the volus.  I mean, their suits have a lot more design constraints, I'd imagine, since they're maintaining a very high pressure.  For instance, I their "hands" seem more like mechanical manipulators.  And the little downward hangy things on their faces?  It'd be very strange if there were actually something in them, since the rest of the suit appears very hard.

Agree.  It's strikingly different from the female helmets.  I wonder if there's some sexual dimorphism with male heads as well.

How'd they even get Tali in there in the first place?
I heard it had something with save editing, makes the most sense anyway, considering it's impossible to replace the models of NPCs. (Otherwise I'd be flooding these pages with images of Daro'Xen replacing Tali/Miranda by now... )

Yeah I noticed that...wonder if they have like tiny or dysfunctional hands and operate the mechanical "fingers" from from levers. And I've seen fanart of Volus where those hangy things on their faces are actually appendages. It might make sense only because the things themselves are thick enough IMO, but they look more like a design choice.

And unlike the volus' "hangy things on their faces", the helmet jawline on quarians looks a bit too thin. I'm not discounting there may be something behind that, but the idea that the jawline is housing appendages seems off to me.

About the mandibles, I think it's just the mask.

And there's obviously SOME sexual dimorphism between male and female quarians, evident of females having a vestigial toe design in their suit and the male's don't. This is why the females make better marines and especially ninjas.
