My canon Shepard is a spacer/war hero. He is a full paragon, and a complete boy scout. He didn't romance anyone in the first game, and he liked Tali even back then. Duty to ship and fleet is important to him, and he sees these values mirrored in her. He's going back to the Alliance as soon as he can.
My alternate Shepard is a full renegade, Earthborn/ruthless infiltrator (though she started as a soldier, she gained tech abilities upon being brought back by Cerberus). She stays loyal to Liara because there's something about her innocence that just touches Shepard. Shep can't be mean to Liara, even though she enjoys being absolutely evil to everyone else and has the worst case of bloodlust you can imagine. She plans on being a permanent part of Cerberus once this is all over.
My paragade Shep is a Vanguard. He started out pure paragon, but since getting resurrected he'll generally make paragon choices but take renegade interrupts. He is also a spacer/war hero...started off as a boy scout, but the Alliance BS is getting too deep for him to wade through. He romanced both Liara and Jack and is honestly hoping for a massively biotic three-way later on. Considering that Liara suggested it when he romanced both she and Ashley in the first game, and that Jack was running with a couple for a time, he thinks he might have a shot.
... or he'll find out first hand what it's like to get hit by a singularity and a shockwave at the same time. Either way, it's going to be epic.
