A pity, because now "dem" and "dat" have completely lost their meaning from overuse.

I've never really seen it as having a meaning.  I always looked at it as a meme for whatever the focus was of a particular picture, and that hasn't changed.  Dem hips was just the originator, it was bound to spread eventually.  As we as Talimancers began appreciating everything about the quarian physique.
