There's a very good reason: its a knife. Knives are useful. Always will be. Cutting, prying, stabbing, the uses are endless.
There's a reason marines still carry around a combat knife.

Now I'm thinking MGS 3 and 4 CQC (close quarters combat) Big Boss and Snake uses a knife in close combat and it works.

Knives are one of our earliest inventions and we've kept them around because they're simple and effective. Surprisingly enough sticking large pieces of metal into people is effective method of stoping them.

This.  I hesitate to give everything ritual significance.  Having a knife on your leg can be very useful thing when you're sent out alone into a world that doesn't have a high opinion of you.

Oh, and by the way, I've foudn several material references that should apply to the mesh in BioD_QuaTlL_310AgriDomeExp, however, I have no idea how to apply them.
