Beowulf was this nordic badass who went to this mead hall where eveyone got so drunk off their asses some monster came and ate them. this of course got him all pissed off so he went and tore its arms off. then the monster's mom showed up and Beowulf bi*ch-slapped it too.

Meh.  The essay is more about the role of monsters in Anglo-Saxon literature. 

But that was a pretty good summary.
