I definitely wouldn't mind a Tali picture in the frame, that's for sure

She might have some techy stuff like circuit boards and what not.

maybe some antibiotics and herbal supplements in the bathroom?

These are some really great points, I can especially see her going back and forth between thinking it's just a crush and thinking it's something more. I think her loyalty mission made her realize just how much she can trust him and how much he's helped her. I also think Tali is selfless. Shepard is her best friend and she looks up to him and respects him greatly, she doesn't want to burden him. That is why I think she says in the second romance conversation that Shepard "deserves to be happy with someone else." It's especially telling with the use of "deserve." He's been really good to her, treated her like an equal, as you said, in a galaxy that mistrusts Quarians and often treats them like trash. And the Flotilla holds her to higher standards or outright insults her simply for being the Admiral's daughter. Quarians are also in their suits all the time, Tali never revealed her crush because she didn't think that Shepard would like her.

Interesting, I'd never thought about not wanting to burden Shep as the reason for not inquiring about a relationship.  I always figured that it was more (understandable,) apprehension that he wouldn't return her romantic feelings, and it could jeopardize the great friendship that they had.  I know she's selfless, but that seems like a concern that wouldn't really affect her until the relationship had progressed a little.

I felt this was part of it too. She respected Shepard a lot and wouldn't want to ruin the friendship if he doesn't return favor or for some reason decide to leave her afterwards. The fact that she's in her suit, the dangerousness of being intimate, and admiring him, made her believe that Shepard would never like her or want to be with her anyway. Shepard can have any woman he wants, basically, and in that light Tali may have thought, why would he choose me? I'm a Quarian...

I know she's selfless, but that seems like a concern that wouldn't really affect her until the relationship had progressed a little.

If you remember, she also said that the suicide mission was too important to jeopardize. I do think she genuinely believes it's important, that's part of her selfless and generous nature. But she also said it because she didn't want to burden Shepard or anyone else. The Flotilla is all about never burdening other Quarians.

Now, I might be wrong, but I had the feeling that Tali was hesitant to remove her mask for Shepard, not because she was afraid of dying for him, but because she was afraid that he would bear the guilt of her death.
As she said, quarians have to think about other people all the time. For so long she's been trying to do what she thinks is best for Shepard and, in her own eyes, since she can't do the things that people in 'normal' relationships can do, she must not be good enough for him.
Gah! It's making me sad again!

It's just so engrained into her. I remember the first time I heard her say "I understand if you want to find something... someone else..." I felt angry that she called herself a thing. She thinks so low of herself when it comes to Shepard.

:crying:

"Shepard, I'm… being selfish… with you. I shouldn't be with you. You deserve someone that—there are so many women out there… that can make you happier than me…" Tali said quietly, somewhat nervously. Shepard was about to interrupt her, but she continued speaking, with more momentum and focus. "All the things you had to do tonight so that we could be together. Using the decontamination unit to sterilize this room--with any other woman you wouldn't have to do that! With any other woman you could look at her face whenever you felt like it. Feel her skin whenever you wanted to. Kiss her, and make love to her with no concern. Any other woman isn't trapped in some damned suit, with a damned helmet on her head. You just… deserve all that, Shepard. That's why I'm… being selfish by being with you."

Tali's eyes began to water, but she continued speaking, her voice wavering "What if you wanted children one day? I can't even do that! Millions of human women can, millions of Asari can! It's just not—it isn't fair! You…deserve better." She could no longer hold her tears back, and began crying again, into Shepard's neck. A gentle whimper was heard, as she cried: "I… just want you to be happy…"

Its sad that she has to feel things like "why would he chose me, I'm just a quarian," she's too good of a person to doubt herself that much.  But at least there's a happy ending.

Another good point. The relationship wouldn't be as other relationships would, it would have complications. As you said, she wants the best for Shepard, and she thought it may have been best for him to find someone else. She has great respect for him.

Her talks in the first game were an obvious indicator that she was happy to be with Shepard. One of the eariler ones was about how the quiet of the ship bothered Tali and she tells Shepard about how she feels about being away from her home. Then she opens up about how she was never really treated the same way Shepard does-assuming you do treat her well. There is even the oppurtunity to help her on her own personal quest and save her the trouble she was initially out for, the Pilgrimage. At home people expect much of her, during her Pilgrimage she was treated poorly for being a quarian, Shepard is genuinely caring, initially as a friend.

It's easy to see how she would develope her feelings, saved by this ace Commander, traveling across the galaxy in a fight to save it. For the first time in her life; she is comfortable where she is. But Tali is afraid to admit that she has developed an interest because of who this man is; a big hero, a human, a friend. She is judging wether or not that this is love or just a crush, but before she ever really got to find out, he dies. Tali has been carrying this for two years, the man she thought she may have loved has been gone, and she has been thinking about him. Then they meet again.

And you know the rest.

I agree it's sad. But that's probably what she thought. She never expected him to see past her just being a Quarian. Most of the galaxy just sees Quarians as scum and criminals. Shepard is the hero of the galaxy basically, and she's been helped out by him countless times. In that light, she may have thought herself crazy to think that it could work, however much she dreamed of it.
