Truth be told, the Dark Ages weren't as dark as they're portrayed by popular conception.

It was called the dark ages, theorized due to one of the european countries volcanoes going off which caused a global decrease in temperature and light.

It's called the "Dark Ages" because Rome fell and everyone thought the world succumbed to war, poverty, and cannibalism.

Pretty much: "**** really sucked so let's call it the Dark Ages."

Though yes, that Volcano theory is why the climate dropped. You also have the Magyars, the Vikings....oh god taco bell is kicking in. BBL. Bathroom

I think Medievalists who hate the title are ignoring the fact that it's actually pretty accurate. Sure, the Dark Age weren't a cesspool of scum and villainy, but they were a great deal less stable than either the Roman era that preceded them or the feudal era that followed, during which point the concept of the state reemerged.

It's not a perfect term, but it's not without its utility either, since the "Early Middle Age" (what most people call the Dark Age) is really quite a bit different from either the High Middle Age that followed or the Late Middle Age after that.
