It is indeed quite interesting. Talking to someone on the internet is a window into their soul. If they remain civil they can be considered a good person as their morals override the ability to be a jerk. If they act like a jerk it doesn't matter how they act in real life because the way they act in real life is only after they realize there are consequences.
Take away all consequences and you will meet the true person.
I prefer direct face-to-face conversations. A lot of the expression is done by facial expressions and inflections in voice, that does not translate into text well, so much is lost in transit.
I admittedly take advantage of that and I often speak politely to people online and insult them subtley.
