I'd have to agree, Shepard could have at least given her some creds for paragon or said You can keep yourself alive just find as renegade if they really wanted to as well as I can give you directiosn to someone who can help you as neutral. It would fill in the hole left there and wouldnt of taken much effort.

Well, she wanted to buy a ship, and as much as I like quarians, I don't think I can afford that.
It would be cool if I could give her a lift on the Normandy, though.

I think the best thing for Lia'Vael would've been like. "Hey, why don't you go to where my ship is docked, and help with some maintenance, and I pay you for your time? Just a job to get you on your feet"
Then you get a quick cutscene of saying goodbye as you leave the Citadel.

There sure are a lot of "save the quarian!" missions.
