That's why I said "aspire to be the new Garrus." Of course Jacob can't compete with the shared history Garrus and Shep have.
I actually did like the "new recruit" talks Shep and Jacob always had. Jacob got to throw out some opinions, and while I often had to shoot them down, it was a nice bit of interaction. They could have used that to give the player some influence over Jacob, but alas, that was not developed.
That's another thing that always bothered me about Jacob, AND Miranda for that matter. Yeah, they have opinions and all, and that's great for character...
Except their opinions all SUCK. Jacob bags on Thane. Jacob bags on Legion. Miranda bags on Jack, and Grunt, and every time she opens her mouth during the suicide mission, she says something liable to get people killed.
Neither one of them are helpful. At all.
Sad thing is, Jacob had potential. He looks up to Shepard, and could have filled the void of student left by Garrus's ascendence to badassery. Showing Jacob that Cerberus is wrong, or that you should get the job done no matter the collateral damage, it had potential. But it was never fleshed out.
In fairness, Miranda is correct when she says she can lead the B-team. But yeah, that's about it.
And I kinda could see where Jacob was coming from on Legion: I mean, as a player we know having a geth on the team is superawesome, but after seeing what happened on the Alarei, the idea should be more scary. And he tried to make nice with Tali (until the parting shot about EDI that everyone tends to focus on). His opinion on Thane would make more sense if it weren't for the hypocrisy. Jacob hates mercenaries, but is a hired gun? And if his excuse is that he's following ideology rather than money, then how does he explain his discomfort with Cerberus' methods?
Totally in agreement about Jacob's potential, though.
Thing about Legion, is at least Miranda wanted to use it to develop better weapons against the geth, Jacob just wanted to waste it completely. And in my opinion they're both still idiots. No one has spoken to a geth in 300 years, aside from Saren, and here you have one that knows your name AND saved your ass? And you don't want to at LEAST figure out what all that's about? The potential in that is just far too great to ignore in my opinion.
As for Tali, damn right he better be making nice to her, his organization attacked her home and her people, not to mention she's a personal friend of Shepard's who has fought with him against waves of geth, krogan, rachni, and Saren himself. I don't recall Jacob doing much of anything for me back in the day. If anything, he should be asking HER for clearance to work on my ship, NOT the other way around.
Agreed on Thane though.
