Earthborn Shepard grew in an environment that discouraged empathy; an environment where being selfish was a virtue that increased one's odds of surviving.
It's one of the reasons he loves Tali. She's the very opposite of all the negativity he faced while growing up. <3
Dammit! Earthborn Sheps get all the nice fluffy reasons to love Tali.
Colonists? Nothing.
You kidding? Colonists and Spacers get just as much reason.
Colonists watched their families die on Mindoir, and Tali lost her father to the Geth. I always imagined my Colonists were thinking of when they found their parents amongst the rubble, wishing someone had been there to comfort them...
And Spacers lived on Ships their whole life, just like Tali.
Truth. I suppose I just feel inadequate compared to everyone's favorite origin.
Although, maybe Tali reminds Shepard of those lessons his parents tried to teach him. Selflessness. Humility. Compassion. Things that he never had the chance to fully grasp.

Which is why it's romantic. It's easy to love someone when they're kind and charming and nice, but it's hard when they've done horrible things. To be willing to overcome that and help that person is... poetic to me.

War Hero isn't all peaches and cream. They've seen some wretched stuff, too. Kasumi's dialogue about one of her paintings makes it clear that not everyone on Elysium could be saved.cannedcream wrote...
See, you can come up with a good reason for any of the background choices.
Only used ruthless for my ME1 renegade Shep and never used war hero. That seemed to make Shepard 'too perfect' you know? I wanted my Shep to have some old problems and ****-ups.
I always gave him a scar down the side of his face and liked to pretend that it was from the thresher maw attack that killed his crew; a little reminder of his past mistakes forever etched into his skin. . .until Miranda showed up and took the scars away and replaced with with creepy glowing ones.

That's why I thought they both had the best romances. They don't feel alien to each other, they let their emotions convey everything they need to.RiptideX1090 wrote...

I think it's enough that both Shepard and Tali are so physically alien to each other. Tali being so compassionate to Shepard is what makes her seem so human.RiptideX1090 wrote...

That too. Same thing with Garrus. It's the fact that you have t o work at the relationship that makes it so worthwhile.

Your dreams sound like the same collection of 'what-the-****ary' that mine are.
Last night was a series of weird-ass dreams; a bunch of strangers suddenly moving into my house. . riding in a boat that turned into a blimp. . .some other random crap that for some reason made sense at the time.
There was a cute dream with Tali in it before the crazy started, but now I can't remember what it was.

Hate to say but loving someone who's done horrible things isn't generally considered a "good" thing. I mean, sure, villains need love too, but overlooking a lover committing atrocities begins to look less like love and more like, how to put this gently, a potentially unhealthy obsession. No one's perfect, so of course you have to learn to live with the flaws of your significant other if you're ever going to get along in the long term, but most people don't consider serious moral grievances to be those kind of flaws.
Take Padme and Anakin in the Star Wars trilogy, for instance. A lot of people, appropriately, groaned over her not only ignoring his massacre of the Sand People tribe (who are canonically more than just "animals") but her actual comforting him over it. You might call that love, but it's certainly not "romantic."
