True, the safety of others (Especially those you care (i.e Tali)) and seeing how your actions turns the universe into a better place, it's more than enough.

Saren was actually in love with Tali, he lusted for her.

Remember that "Hellfire" music scene in Hunchback, where Frollo talks about how he can't get Esmeralda out of his mind? Saren had a similar scene after he first saw Tali; it's the real reason he sent those thugs to get her.
